Very lucky boy...

Here's a game I just played:
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201204/10/game-20120410-021656-d847848d.html

Half a second after I ended the game I received this message from my opponent:

Mordenkainen: very lucky boy, normally I win...enjoy this moment
Mordenkainen has returned to the lobby.

I don't feel like I was lucky, I had a moderately good strategy and sometimes he made some really bad decisions what to pick out from my Envoy draws.

What do you guys think, am I right or was it really just luck?

ps.: I am far from being a boy at 27... :P

This guy just posts that whenever he loses. Don't worry about it too much.

You had... seven Envoys? And no good village type cards.

Both of you had really bad strategies, I'm afraid, and you could have won about 10 turns sooner had you played BMU+ (buying nothing buy money and VPs, plus one Envoy).

Looking at the game... you had a bad opening hand here, Lab is a bad opener, but otherwise, your first 8 or so turns seemed reasonably lucky. Still, I think the fact that he played terribly is the main reason he lost.

...spin-offs are still better for all of the previously cited reasons.
But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

I have been beaten by mass-Envoy several times, and here it seemed like a good way to go with 2 cards giving +2 actions, and GM giving the +buy. In retrospect maybe BM+Envoy would have been better, though less fun.

I've played this guy too. Check out his CR-stats. I find it amusing that someone that usually wins have more losses than wins. Must be a magician. :)

What do you mean?? He wins every single game.

Well... except for the ones where his opponent gets lucky, but those don't count.

Hmmm...

I'd say you had some good luck and he had some bad, and that you made some buys I would personally have considered of dubious value, but certainly I think your play was no worse than his.

Regardless, his final comment was impolite and unsportsmanlike.

i occasionally flame my opponents for sub-optimal plays. If someone playing this would win me and argue that this was not a luck win i would get really mad.

I'm not sure why this makes you mad. It's their loss if they misinterpret good luck for skill, and shouldn't really affect you. That said, I'm sure it's possible that what you think is sub-optimal play might actually be optimal. We all suffer from this from time to time.

He just said that to me as well, after losing!

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201204/13/game-20120413-155404-a2d2ca41.html

Seriously, what does one expect with 3 Thieves and a Workshop?

On a tangential note: Secret Chamber was really useful here, both as a counter to thief, and to keep my economy going once I was drawing my whole deck with a whole bunch of redundant draw actions.

It's arrogant to assume you know the optimal play. No one is that good at Dominion. If someone makes a play that looks suboptimal and wins anyway, maybe it wasn't as bad as you thought.
