I am looking for an expansion for my birthday. But I am a bit afraid that some cards are taken out in the second edition which are needed for the expansion. Which expansions can be used for the second edition?

If you're asking which expansions have base cards in the second edition, the answer is only the base set (just called Dominion). Intrigue is no longer playable by itself as far as I remember. Other than that, all the removed cards were bad; you don't want them.

I'd suggest getting Intrigue first, but Seaside could be good.

I would suggest Intrigue. It doesn't add any new mechanics.
Then add Seaside or Prosperity.
Seaside adds duration cards. (a new mechanic)
Prosperity adds victory tokens (which is a new way to gain victory points), platinum and colonies ((more $ and more points), and more expensive cards (7 and 8 cost).

2 say intrigue first. It makes really sense to start with an expansion that doesn't have new mechanics.  I will go for that one. Thanks alot.
