Mystery Science Theater 3000

In the not too distant future,
way down in Deep 13  (CELLAR
Dr. Forrester (ALCHEMIST) and TV's Frank (MINION)
were hatching an evil SCHEME
they'd hired a guy by the name of Mike (PAWN)
just a regular Joe they didn't like
their experiment needed a good test case
so they conked him on the noggin and they shot him into space
we'll send him cheesy movies
the worst we can find (TORTURER)
he'll have to sit and watch them all
and we'll monitor his mind
now keep in mind Mike can't control
when the movies begin or end
he'll try to keep his sanity (JESTER)
with the help of his robot friends

Alchemist (the evil Dr. Forrester)
Minion (TV's Frank)
Pawn (Joel and Mike)
Cellar (Deep 13)
Scheme (the evil scheme)
Torturer (the cheesy movies... the worst, they could find)
Jester (keeping their sanity)
Remake (robots made with the special parts)
Horse Traders (invention exchange)
Pearl Diver (Pearl)

Star Trek Deep Space Nine

Wharf (Worf)
Spy (Garak, and later Bashir)
Bishop (or Vedek)
Mining Village (Terrok Nor used to be one)
Swindler (Quark)
Duke (Gul "Duke" at)
Saboteur (Changeling infiltrators)
Upgrade (the station gets one in season four)
Possession (by the Pah Wraiths)
Tunnel (The Wormhole)

I created a Star Trek set on the Dominion Deck Builder about a year ago.  My cards were:

Chapel
Ambassador
Chancellor
Bridge
Envoy
Navigator
Explorer
Outpost
Wharf
Adventurer

There are several other cards I could have used (Bureaucrat, Spy, Steward, Tactician, Nobles, etc.)  Quite a few cards fit the theme.

So, uh, content choices notwithstanding, I'm one of those really weird nerds who hates the abbreviation LOTR over the "correct" 'The LR' - the abbreviation Tolkien used.

What's your kingdom for The LR, then?

Screw movies, how about book series?

Discworld:

Governor (Vetinari)
Militia (City Watch)
Witch
Apprentice (Rincewind)
(Unseen) University
City (Ankh-Morpork)
Swindler (C.M.O.T. Dibbler)
Bureaucrat (DEATH)
Laboratory (Leonard of Quirm)
Tunnel (The dwarves)

----

Far too many to do just ten, but I think that works for now.

Pretty sure The LR is a book series. Especially the reference to Sam's Wedding which wasn't in the movies.

Actually it was...maybe just in the extended edition though. Haven't seen the original theatrical version since, well, the theater....

Sherlock (BBC version of course)

Tactician (Moriarity)
Golem (The Golem from episode 3)
Apprentice (Watson)
City (London)
Scheme
Laboratory (221B)
Bureacrat (Mycroft)
Throne Room (Buckingham Palace)
Torturer (Irene Adler or the cab driver from episode one, they both fulfill the role in a different way)
Jester (Sherlock Holmes)

Couldn't think of anything better then Jester for Sherlock and I couldn't think of a better card for Moriarity. Tell me if someone has an Upgrade to make for my casting.

Edit: I am considering Noble Brigand for Sherlock. Nomad Camp could be the homeless neighborhood where they find The Golem. It's tough narrowing it to just ten cards.

to continue hijacking the thread...just because tolkien used "the LR" as an abbreviation doesn't make it correct. it's an abbreviation dude. it's meant to shorten a longer title.

LotR is a fine abbreviation, as it it is less ambiguous than LR and it seems to be the preferred acronym in the mainstream. anything else to me just reeks of hipsterism/elitism.

I read Lord of the Rings before it was cool to read it*.  I also read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight**, which you probably haven't heard of.

I thought I'd make one for The Wire, my favorite TV show of all time.  But there's so much going on in this program, that I made three separate kingdoms (and a few extra black market cards) to cover everything I wanted.  Each covers a different "sphere" explored in the show.

The Docks of The Wire
Bishop (Catholic priest Jermoe Lewandewski)
Contraband (Stolen imported merchandise)
Develop (Andy Krawczyk developing the Grain Pier)
Harem (Human trafficking of prostitutes)
Monument (Stained glass window)
Smugglers (The Greeks)
Trader (Proposition Joe)
Torturer (The Greek himself)
Warehouse (Double G's warehouse)
Wharf (The docks)

The Law of The Wire
Black Market (Hamsterdam, established by Major Colvin)
Bureaucrat (Any police brass or city official)
City (Baltimore, MD)
Council Room (Baltimore City Council)
Fortune Teller (Madame LaRue, the psychic)
Governor (Carcetti)
Great Hall (Baltimore City Hall)
Laboratory (Crime lab)
Spy (Kima or Sydnor undercover or Santangelo)
Steward (Coleman Parker or Michael Steintorf, chiefs of staff)
Black Market Deck
  • Fool's Gold (Hot shots)
  • Goons (Many choices, but mainly Chris and Snoop)
  • Militia (Herc and Carver, Western District cops)
  • Minion (Could be pretty much anyone: Wee-Bay, Serge, Cheese, etc.)
  • Pawn (Ziggy Sobotka or maybe even Nick Sobotka)
  • + everything in "The Streets" (see below)

The Streets of The Wire
Conspirator (New day co-op member)
Lookout (Lookouts and hoppers)
Noble Brigand (Omar)
Peddler ("Pandemic!")
Salvager (Bubbles)
Shanty Town (Projects)
Scheme (Stringer's plan to eliminate Brother Mouzone and Omar)
Stash (Stash house)
Trading Post (Corners)
Tournament (Golden Gloves Tournament or East vs. West basketball game)

Jack of All Trades is the opposite of what Holmes is. He is very comprehensive in some fields but didn't know the earth orbits the sun.

Kind of surprised no one did this yet, but the wait is over! Now, for the tableau set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away....

Apprentice - Vader was Obi-Wan's apprentice
Governor - Grand Moff Tarkin
Militia - I used Militia to represent a rebellion for my Godfather Part II set, but I like it here too
Rabble - the troublemakers in the Mos Eisley cantina
Salvager - the Jawas; Trader could also work
Smugglers - Han and Chewie
Tactician - Obi-Wan sacrifices his own life so everyone can get away
Torturer - "And now, your highness, we will discuss the location of your hidden rebel base."
Tournament - in itself, it doesn't really work, but all the prizes do: Han won his Trusty Steed, the Millenium Falcon, as a prize from Lando; Luke and Obi-Wan set out with Han and Chewie to save Princess Leia, but Han's just in it for the Bag of Gold; after the Battle of Yavin Han and Luke are awarded nice big shiny medals (sort of like Diadem I guess), and presumably some Followers as well
Wharf - Mos Eisley is like a space wharf

The Dominion card JoAT doesn't do everything either, it does a lot though. Similar to Holmes who is skilled in more than just crime solving.

All Along the Watchtower

"There must be some way out of here," said the joker (Jester) to the thief (Thief),
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Businessmen (Moneylender), they drink my wine (Vineyard), plowmen dig my earth (Farmland),
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke,
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate,
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."

All along the watchtower (Watchtower), princes (Nobles) kept the view
While all the women (Harem) came and went, barefoot servants (Steward), too.
Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl,
Two riders (Tournament) were approaching, the wind began to howl.
