Weekly Design Contest #147: Target Demographic

Well, we designed a liaison. Let's do the other one, design an Ally.

No kingdom/non-supply piles, please, and do try to limit the number of Other Components I'd need to drag out - I'm already getting coin tokens and mats, I don't want to be getting Other Mats.

If you need to include other types, in the interest of keeping your card readable without me getting my reading glasses out, consider using the "Heirloom" portion of the card generator to add additional types.

All that said, I'm not going to be disqualifying any entries, because that felt really bad the last time I had hard limits on parameters, so just, do your best.

Caterer
Ally
At the start of your turn, you may spend 1, 2, or 3 Favors to gain a non-Victory card costing up to and a number of Coppers equal to 3 minus the number of Favors spent.

A Caterer provides you with a Banquet, and if you pay extra you can avoid some of the Coppers. Edit: added alternate options besides the original 1 Favor option to make it a more broadly useful.

Original:
Caterer
Ally
At the start of your turn, you may spend a Favor to gain 2 Coppers and a non-Victory card costing up to .

When you play a card from your hand, you may pay 2 Favors to play a cheaper card sharing a type with it from the supply, leaving it there.

Spend 2 Favors when you play a card to add a Band of Misfits type effect to it. I am not sure the "from your hand" bit is necessary, but it is mainly to prevent something like a Prince or Champion being better than they already are. Feedback is appreciated.

When shuffling, you may spend a Favor. Otherwise, add a Copper from the supply to the shuffle.

This would technically allow you to play, for example, a Duchy after having played Nobles. (and then trash with Bonfire). Not sure if I consider that a bug or a feature. :)

Edited: whoops. Xen3k correctly points out the Duchy would not be in play.

My Submission:

Quote from: Veteran Trainers
Veteran Trainers • Ally
When you play an Action card, you may spend 1 Favor per $1 or 1D it costs. If that's its entire cost, replay it and gain a copy of it.

An Ally version of Disciple, because it is such a strong effect, the cost is similarly high, and scales with the cost of the card you want to throne/gain. The start of the second sentence prevents it from being used with Potion cards or fan cards that have unique costs (like Card Costs).

The FAQ would clarify that you can't spend 0 Favors, so if a card is discounted to being free Veteran Trainers can't be used on it.

Lol, you could play a Duchy, but, unless I am mistaken, you can't Bonfire it as you leave the Duchy in the supply, right?

Oops, I didn't see this when I submitted my Band of Musicians, which is nearly identical. Drat.

This entry has been revoked.

Order of Monks
When one of your cards is trashed, you may spend 4 Favors to exile it.

FYI, the official Allies all say "spend" instead of "pay".

Just a warning/FYI, spineflu did say to try to avoid using extra components, which Exile does.

Deleting entry as too similar to Forest Dwellers. Will have another think.

After thinking a bit, I will make another submission to this contest that doesn't have such a stockpiling issue, and seems more interesting.

Band of Rebels

At the end of another player's Buy phase, you may spend 2 Favors to play a card with exactly one type that they have in play, leaving it there.

"Exactly one type" is a catch-all to prevent any issues with Durations and Commands, problematic behavior with Attacks, and making sure that you can only imitate cards that were played this turn, not e.g. called Reserves. It also makes any Liaison safe to play, which is thematic.

Topographer's Guild
Ally

At the start of your turn you may spend any number of Favors. For each Favor spent, look at one card from the top of your deck. Discard any number of them then put the rest back in any order.

Well I guess it's not strictly weaker than Forest Dwellers. It's better if you're accumulating a ton of tokens. Still, seems pretty similar.

Band of Adventurers
Ally

After playing a Liaison, you may spend any number of Favors to gain a card to your hand or onto your deck costing $1 per Favor spent.

Only 2 of the official Allies have effects that occur after you play a Liaison, so I wanted to try making another one of those. It allows for gaining onto your deck as well as to hand to help make the Treasure-Liaison cards more useful with it.

Another idea

Worker's Union
Ally

At the start of your turn you may spend at least 1 favor to trash a card from your hand. If you did, gain a card, costing up to the cost of the trashed card plus $1 per Favor spent.

-Updated the wording to explicitly say trashed card.

This loops with two Guildmasters and a set aside gainer.

Could be eliminated with "After you play an Action card from your hand..."

You can spend 4 Favors for your buy token, 5 favors for your $1 or action token...

Feedback is appreciated.

Maybe wouldn't be good to put Teacher restriction of one token per pile?
