Phil. Stone & Herbalist vs 3p game

Hi there,

we're a solid group of 3 german people, playing dominion real life (:
theres no need for playing competitively, but everyone is trying to do so (: I would describe our average level "4/10") 😊

So the kingdom had (we're just playing max. 2 expansions at this time):

Courtyard
Herbalist
Shanty Town
Bridge
Mining Village
Torturer
Trading Post
Vineyard
Scrying Pool
Philosophers-Stone

I lost with 26 pts against 31 and 29

I just followed the main way to play the combo herb & stone.
I didnt buy torturer, instead i'm choosing to take a curse to fill my deck faster, but my enemies seem to get to provinces fast enough with a big money like strat ... Is it more difficult to play a combo (2 card synergies) in multiplayer games? Or would you go for another strat by this kingdom?

I don't remember if i forgot to go duchy dancing ... Even my stones generated $6 buying power

Pretty sure the optimal play doesn't involve Stone or Herbalist even in 3p. I think I would open Potion/Couryard into as many Scrying Pools as possible, and pick up a Trading Post to thin. The alternative would be to skip Potion and go For MV/Torturer.

Doesn't it hurt to gain the silvers from TP?
When you go MV/Torturer, how you generate buying power? If i'm trashing the MVs theres no villages other than Shanty Town...

It totally does. The thing is that Scrying Pool's baseline power is very high and Stone's very low, so the support for Scrying Pool doesn't need to be great to make it viable. (And conversely, the support for Stone does need to be great.)

Trading Post is a pretty bad trasher, but it still thins by 1, and Scrying Pool tends to be viable even without any trasher. If there was anything better, like Forager or Steward or Lookout or really anything, I'd say SP should be by far the strongest thing to go for.

When you go MV/Torturer, how you generate buying power? If i'm trashing the MVs theres no villages other than Shanty Town...

Absolutely don't trash MVs unless the game is almost over.

You would open Silver/Courtyard or Silver/Silver and then ideally don't buy more Treasure cards (your starting Treasures are basically enough). Your goal is to maximize the number of Tortuers you play each turn, so you only want cards that make your deck go more smoothly. That's MV, torturer, Shanty Town, Maybe Trading Post.

Another card that's probably worth buying eventually with both strategies (since they both get lots of Action cards) is Vineyard.

Don't you want lots of Bridges here to optimize those Vineyard points?

How useful is it to open with Potion vs. buying one after the first shuffle?

Want? Yes. Enough to prioritize it? I don't think so; not until late.

Open with it I think. There is nothing strong you can buy instead.
