Not sure, but probably too late.  According to CR, it's my worst card so I'm likely on to something.  In all honesty I'm just glad I was even able to recognize it as an issue.   I think my strategy was poisoned a bit by the first people I played Dominion with, who told me only Provinces were worth buying, so I avoided Duchies for a long time.

My second-worst card is Scrying Pool, which also doesn't surprise me, but I think getting Duchies right is more important.

Don't look at the popular buys stats on duchies.  Like provinces, curses, etc. they are all warped.

Frequently you buy duchies because you're losing and can't buy a province (because it will kill you, or PPR, or you can't afford it), so you buy a duchy instead.

When you win convincingly, you might not need to buy any duchies.

Almost 5 months after I made this thread, and this weekend I have finally reached.... LEVEL 30!!!

Indeed, I'm crawling my way back out of my 36 down to 26 slump.

not to take anything at all away from -Stef-'s great play, but skill/rank will creep up over time due to the nature of TrueSkill's formulas.

There's some truth to that.  Looking back at the leaderboard from, say, last September, the highest ranked player (non-cheating division) is chwhite at level 43. 

However, even as recently as April of this year, a level 46 would put you at #1.  It's hard to argue that a jump of 7 levels at the top has all that much to do with TrueSkill creep.

It's definitely a bit of both. It's mostly Stef being super good, but the rating inflation is a real thing overall, too.

your 7 level statement means nothing because it is entirely based on when you choose to sample. i could try to make the case that nothing has changed by saying jonts26 hit level 49 back in november and that -Stef- was down to 49 last week. that's not how things work.

true skill is based off of a gaussian distribution of skill, so levels should creep higher as more and more players join the system. and just because the leaderboard does not list a player, we cannot assume that the calculations simply ignore their presence. also, i don't think we know what changes, if any, dougz has made to the calculations over the past year.

Can you explain that statement?  I can think of reasons why skill rating might experience inflation over time, but none that are sensitively dependent on the fact that the distributions are approximated by Gaussians.

well first off, it is very possible that i am wrong on some or all of this.  this is just how i have read the information available regarding TrueSkill. basically, TrueSkill tries to fit all of the available players skill levels into a normal bell curve.  that is, the majority of players will sit at some level x, with a tendency to see less and less of certain levels as you move further from that center point.

now, because of the massive influx of new players to Isotropic over time, you will see more total players pushing the boundaries on the edges of the bell curve.  this can be evidenced practically by both the increase in peak level over time as well as by the increase of players falling into the level 35-40 and 40-45 buckets.

I finally completed my New Year's resolution and reached level 40! W00t!

Time for a break for a few days. Once I realized this goal was in sight, about two weeks ago, I started playing more than I otherwise would to drive the uncertainty down. Now I'm just a wee bit exhausted. But I'm sure the siren call will bring me back before long.

CouncilRoom doesn't seem to be updating, but I think I'm under 1300 games. Anywhere else, they'd tell me that was a lot of games.

Just jumped 4 levels in 2 days (3 levels in one day) to hit level 40.

Still didn't manage to advance from my pod in the DS tournament yesterday though.
