fonts?

i am in school, still, and the font that i use for all of the entirety of school essentially is, times new roman, 12pt. i sorta assumed that was the best one, or at least had a reasonably strong claim, but then i noticed that both my history teacher and my english teacher (yes, i'm in that school) used garamond and i remembered some inkling of, what do font snobs think is the best font? helvetica? and i googled 'font ranking' which gave me a guardian article that said garamond is the best one, and there seems to be some argument but garamond is widely regarded as p f neato. i changed my phone display to garamond and i was gonna see what cards i could play to be able to use it here, but when i googled 'garamond is the best font' the top result informed me that georgia is quite similar but better online because of the detail of display and stuff, and we have that. what do you think of garamond/georgia? what is your pocket font? is font trivial as long as it's not a really bad font? is it clunky for me to use a different font than everyone else?

I would personally avoid Georgia because I'm sick of it already and Garamond looks fine but could be easier to read. I like Candara, it's not overused and looks pretty nice and it's easy to read.

This is Verdana, I like Verdana, I tend to like sans-serif fonts better than serif fonts. Serif fonts, like Times New Roman, have 'feet' at the bottom of the letters, sans-serif fonts don't. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Lorum ipsem dolor sit amet.

Fun fact: Donald X. used Comic Sans for his prototype cards because of readability and he wasn't even kidding.

The rule of thumb I heard is to use serif fonts for anything printed on paper, and sans-serif fonts for anything on the web.

I use Times New Roman / Arial for these because I'm not too fussed about fonts.

Minion is clearly the best font for this forum.

You should be more concerned about using correct capitalisation, spacing, and paragraph breaks.

Well, it sounds snarky, but thespaceinvader is correct. Your font choice is less important than spacing and capitalization in terms of readability (edge case: Jokerman, Curlz, Giddyup, and other trollish fonts could be worse in terms of readability).

Like Titandrake, I follow the general rule of serifs in print and sans serif online. I also am not fussy about using TNR and Arial for those purposes. My company standard is to use Verdana on just about everything, and while I don't mind using Verdana, I notice that it is generally wider than Arial, so I've had some word-wrap issues when I converted my documents. That has built up a slight resentment toward Verdana, though it's not really the font's fault.

It sounds dumb, but fonts with serifs are easier to read on paper, and fonts without serifs are easier to read on the screen.

I personally tend to use Trebuchet a lot on printed materials, as it's an easy read with some serifs.  On the other hand, I tend to use Courier [New] for typing things intended for only my own consumption, because I find monospace very easy to read.

In paragraph format, I would stick with the serif/sans rule of thumb. For graphic design, it's about creating a consistency within the image. I tend to look at it from the latter perspective.

Yes, absolutely, unless the message you intend to convey is "don't bother reading my post".

I honestly never noticed the font selection option. I primarily use quick reply, unless I'm quoting someone.

This font is cool, right?

It is very bad to use a non-default font on a web forum. It is very bad for forums to even offer the option to post in a non-default font.

here are all the default fonts available

courier: welcome to the defunct quagmire of hjkpsvxyz
arial: welcome to the defunct quagmire of hjkpsvxyz
arial black:welcome to the defunct quagmire of hjkpsvxyz
impact: welcome to the defunct quagmire of hjkpsvxyz
times new roman: welcome to the defunct quagmire of hjkpsvxyz
verdana: welcome to the defunct quagmire of hjkpsvxyz
georgia: welcome to the defunct quagmire of hjkpsvxyz
andale mono: welcome to the defunct quagmire of hjkpsvxyz
trebuchet ms: welcome to the defunct quagmire of hjkpsvxyz
comic sans ms: welcome to the defunct quagmire of hjkpsvxyz

that said, it seems as though, by typing a different font that you like into the 'font= ' argument you can use some other ones, i suppose as long as the forum has it. for fonts it doesn't have, i think it just uses times new roman
here other nice fonts that the forum does have

garamond (12pt): welcome to the defunct quagmire of hjkpsvxyz
curlz mt: welcome to the defunct quagmire of hjkpsvxyz
papyrus: welcome to the defunct quagmire of hjkpsvxyz

and not that many other ones. maybe that's a good thing. i suppose, just use verdana most of the time here, whatever. there was a study that said it was the best one at 10pt (and another one that said garamond was pretty neat at 12pt). if you're making a long-winded strategy post maybe consider 12pt garamond so that the especially critical people won't read it

This is not really how it works. The forum doesn't "have" any particular fonts. When you use the [ font=blah ] code it just generates an html snippet like <span style="font-family: blah;">. Whether you see the specified font depends on whether you have it installed on your machine. It's possible to use webfonts that are downloaded along with the page, but this forum doesn't do it.

As for font preference, I prefer Calisto MT and Palatino for serif, and Gill Sans for sans.

I'm having a hard time deciding what font to use for [serious] posts. And which font I want to use for not-so-serious posts. Any suggestions?
