f.ds Mafia Community Game Descriptor Definitions:

Open: A game with this label means the setup has no hidden mechanics, roles, or possibilities.  All Role PMs are public and full setup information is known before the game begins.  For an example of a Standard Open game, see: M5: Emptying the Apothecary.  For an example of a Tweaked Open game, see: M29: Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey Dinner Party.  For an example of an Invented Open game, see M28: Harry Potter Mafia.

Semi-Open:  A game with this label means the setup allows for a distinct set of possibilities, all of which are known to the players before the game starts.  While a semi-open setup should have no surprises, it also has no guarantees.  Semi-open setups usually involve a random system for determining which roles are included in the game.  For an example of a Standard Semi-Open game, see: M24: Samurai and Ninjas (C9++).  For an example of a Tweaked Semi-Open game, see: M4: Within These Estate Walls.  For an example of an Invented Semi-Open game, see asher9++.

Closed:  A game with this label means limited to no information about the roles, interactions, or possibilities is given before the game starts.  Generally, there are no Standard Closed or Tweaked Closed games.  For an example of an Invented Closed game, see: M25: Mean Girls.

Standard:  A game with this label means the setup is not an original creation of the mod, but is an accepted setup at mafiascum.net or has been accepted as a standard f.ds setup.

Tweaked:  A game with this label means the setup is based on an accepted Standard setup, but includes deviations from the norm.

Invented:  A game with this label means the setup is an original creation of the mod.

Role Madness (RMM):  A game with this label means that either the roles in the game are complex and possibly (and probably) invented; the game itself is not standard mafia (includes some other type of game in it like "The Resistance" is part of RMM 44); or there aren't any vanilla roles.  An easy axiom to remember is that "normal games care more about days, RMM games care more about nights."

Bastard (BM):  A game where something about it causes the game to not have assured balance.  Often silly in nature, and not necessarily taken seriously.  This may include lying by the mod.  These games generally do not count toward stats.

Blitz (ZM):  A game where the deadlines are short.  For our site, even 48-hour Days are considered blitz.

Normal (M):  A game that doesn't fit into RMM, BM, ZM categories.  These games are more simple, and don't have many gimmicks.

f.ds Mafia Community Standard Role Descriptors:

(The following are the current standard, normal versions of power roles for use in games hosted here.)


Doctor

--Can target any living player, other than himself.
--Will stop one normal kill attempt on the target.
--Is unsuccessful if roleblocked or jailkept.
--Is unsuccessful if the target is jailkept or otherwise becomes untargetable (commutes, hides, etc.)
--Is unsuccessful if the kill attempt has the strongman modifier.
--Is successful even if killed while doctoring.

Sample PM:

Welcome to Sample PM Mafia, Sample Player.  You are a Doctor.

At night, you may target one living player other than yourself.  You will protect them from one nightkill.

It's not currently different at all, just mostly quoted over.  The other one was running long, and it's easier to track a new thread.  It's been awhile.

I do plan on some new features in the reserved slots, too.

I don't like multiball. I feel like several scum teams makes reads even harder, which is not good (I don't like SK's for the same reason). I prefer good old single scum team.

I feel like a lot of the multiball games a scum team has won... excluding SK games which I don't consider multiball...

Major Arcana II, Deep Space 9, Masons and Monks, Toy Story, Donald's Greater Idea, and now Shakespeare. Honestly I can't think of the top of my head of a multiball game where town won (excluding the past year, in which I paid zero attention, of course).

So it seems more to me that the games have been 20/40/40 (ish). I think the ideal would be around 40/30/30.

That said I think multiball should be the exception, not the rule. So I would vote for a game that isn't multi-ball for the next few games.

No pressure or anything, but if you are looking for one to run, I am highly interested in playing Switch mafia again. The only downside is that it has a night start and often two people end up dead before the game even starts. I could do that. 12 with daystart seems better than 13 with nightstart to me, as well. I'll work on getting it open.

Of course it will work! The vote counts will have flashy animations, you will have to install a add-on that might delete all your other mafia posts and that you have to update manually after each game Day in order to post in the game thread, and if you have a long PM, you might only be able to see one third of it. But it will work!

Sounds like an interesting setup. Good find! Ash should probably give the final say, but I would think that it would be fine to open it given the lack of interest in people moderating normal games, specifically 9-player.

I know I would sign up. Some people don't like playing in smaller games, maybe you can snag one of them to be a co-mod with you (the first game I modded, I benefited greatly from having another player there to help with questions throughout the moderating process)?

But I like the treestumping mechanic.

I'm assuming that I will be able to do it at some point if not now, so I will get to work on it and wait for a nod from Ash.

My thinking was that since 13+ player ones are currently a bit slow to fill up, maybe a 9 player game would fill up faster.

I want to play in said set-up, so I don't want to look at the setup, but otherwise would be very willing.

One thing I would suggest is to consider modding a standard setup first. From my own personal experience it helped to have a couple of turns moderating a setup that was standard to get the basics of modding down before attempting to branch out and create new set ups.

If nothing else modding standard setups really helps with getting you thinking critically and thinking differently than as a player about roles and balance and thus helps in the creation of new balanced setups. At least that is how it was for me.

I love co-modding. It has all the benefits of modding (mainly mod-spectating) without the biggest inconvenients (writing flavor, being terrified of fucking things up by sending the wrong PM to the wrong person).

faust is probably better-suited to help you with the game balance though.

I like yuma's suggestion that I try a standard setup or two while I put together closed setup.

It has been a while, but MXXXIII was Fire and Ice Mafia. I think it would be worth playing again. (caveat: it is multiball and some people don't like multiball, but as long as it isn't too common is worth having around)

And I have never heard of W15++. So that would probably bump it up in my level of interest. Plus it has virgins. Who doesn't love virgins? And lawyers!

Although I do see that there is no historical record for this, maybe games have been played but the wiki hasn't been updated, that might be worth looking into.

I would be more inclined to co-mod this than a closed setup. However, actually do so would depend upon when this runs and what my status is with other games. If I am in a game or two already I would be very willing to co-mod. But if I am in the midst of a playing drought than I wouldn't want to help mod because I would rather be playing

So that isn't a useful answer..., if someone can commit more readily they might be better.

So Walking Dead RMM, which appears to be RMM32 after Silver's game, is like if insanity and intensity had a baby in a post-apocalyptic virus-ridden Georgia countryside.

It's still on track to be 14 players at this point.

I thought about doing a Sherlock themed game but then became overwhelmed at the thought of writing flavor sophisticated and complex enough to do it justice and decided to drop it. But I am sure you will do great with it.

I thought about doing a Sherlock themed game but then became overwhelmed at the thought of writing flavor sophisticated and complex enough to do it justice and decided to drop it. But I am sure you will do great with it.

Haha, yes, the flavor is what concerns me most. I will probably spend much more time than is reasonable on trying to write a compelling story that everyone just skips over.

Request normal Invented game slot for me please.

Well the normal invented game I was working on ended up being fatally flawed and I can't figure out a way to fix it, so my invented slot is on hold, at least until I think of something else to base the setup around. That tends to be one of the hardest parts so I don't know if I'll have it anytime soon.

If there is a lag I would be happy to run a normal "standard" game, but it appears that there is currently adequate coverage for that. I'll update if my invented game gets a jumpstart soon.

I don't think experience playing is really important, what matters is experience modding.  I think it's recommended that you co-mod a game with a more experienced mod first before modding a game yourself.  Co-modding gives you a sense of what goes on behind the scenes without forcing you into any difficult situations.  But really, I think as long as you're organized and dedicated enough (which I assume you are), then you should be fine jumping right into it.

I am always happy to look at set-ups since I don't plan on playing mafia again any time soon anyway, but there are probably other people who could give you better input.

So I had an idea for a game, called Rewind Mafia. Basically, it's an RMM game, but all of the roles come from past games (RMM, normal, or BM (except not roles that are BM)).

I would run it as an RMM, but I also probably don't have a lot of time before I have to go on a two year hiatus. So I was wondering if I could open it up immediately.

I'm mostly asking faust, to see if I can jump ahead of him in line.

So I had an idea for a game, called Rewind Mafia. Basically, it's an RMM game, but all of the roles come from past games (RMM, normal, or BM (except not roles that are BM)).

I would run it as an RMM, but I also probably don't have a lot of time before I have to go on a two year hiatus. So I was wondering if I could open it up immediately.

I'm mostly asking faust, to see if I can jump ahead of him in line.

I'd play some newbie-friendly game only for newbies to encourage people who wants but never played mafia, play it more. Just maybe two goon, cop/doctor and VTs for 10-12 people. It'd be really great.
