Help me stop my downward slide
« on: January 22, 2015, 07:43:10 pm »

I've been playing poorly for many months now.  After peaking in the Level 40-42 range sometime last year, I have been on a gradual slide down the leaderboard.  I even dipped below Level 35 recently, for the first time since I don't even remember when.

Streaks of bad luck can't last that long, I have to conclude that I'm somehow actually getting worse at Dominion.  I'm feeling frustrated and demoralized.  The more I play the more I lose.  I need help.

In this thread I'd like to post game logs.  Any critiques of my play would be much appreciated.

Here's one from today: http://gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?20150122/log.50babbafe4b05a8d74969537.1421972478431.txt

I got some really bad draws early, but that can't solely account for the drubbing I got here, can it?  My final Duchy buy was a mistake, I had forgotten that would be the third pile.  Should I have followed him on Rogue?  I feel like this was just an unlucky loss (the bad early draws, also getting my lone Duchy taken away with Rogue) but then again I'm feeling like I've been suffering unlucky losses every single time I log on to play so I don't even trust my perception about my shuffle luck anymore.

Another recent one: http://gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?20150120/log.505e9c9c0cf2ef979299a7c0.1421794670539.txt

I got completely creamed here, and I really don't know what I did wrong.

seems like everyone is losing these days.

Some actual help: In the second game you really need to focus on trashing. Marauder is nice against weak trashing and trading post is probably good. I also think 5 bridges is probably too many for both of you, but I'm not sure about that one.

You won 4 of our league match games, so not everyone is losing...

I'm by far not the person to ask (Level 35? I think I got that high once) but I wish you luck revitalizing your rating and abilities!

Utterly crushed by... Royal Seal: http://www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?/20150122/log.505e9c9c0cf2ef979299a7c0.1421978816446.txt

Should I not have gone for the engine because there was so little draw available?  Going money with Colonies and Black Market just seems so disgusting though, how can it be the right strat?

Since the ratings are relative, it's also possible that you aren't getting worse, but others are getting better.

You did get behind on 'stuff' quite quickly in the wharf game. Compare the decks at about turn 7.
Any 5/2 trading post start is a likely winner, especially on a foedum board.
There was never any engine in the colony game so royal seal was better than 8 fortresses.

What about this one: http://gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?20150127/log.505e9c9c0cf2ef979299a7c0.1422385209123.txt

Should I have stopped at a single Nobles and then focused on Fairgrounds or something?
