Why even bother building a Word template to keep things consistent? Let's just roam around an electronic wasteland flinging different fonts and paragraph spacings like Mad Max villains.

Speaking of which, don't you hate it when people use Comic Sans for things that are supposed to be professional?  I recently discovered this wonderful new font that makes everything much classier.  It's called Papyrus.  We should all use that instead!

You know what I hate more than stupid fonts?

People who have background pictures and colours on their work emails.

If I have a client email me and their background is pink, or they have some life affirming quote in their signature, they automatically get rated as not important in my brain, cant help it.

And I work with big companies, this isnt some small time store owner.

Yes, that sort of thing is horrible.

... you make documents in Word?  *shudders*

Word works fine for most of what we need. It's not like there's room in the budget for other Word processing.

But Word is plenty powerful on its own. If I'm working with a more fluid layout—like a newsletter—I might use InDesign. Aside from that, Word handles everything I need. Although those muthafucking numbered lists are a pain.

Hmm, LaTeX looks like something I don't need. I suppose I can appreciate that the author can just type everything out without worrying about layout, but I'm not one of those authors. I have to worry about layout, so I use styles in Word. I suppose if I could be responsible for writing while someone else does the layout, I would see the appeal in LaTeX.

I author (almost exclusively) in LaTeX, and I'm concerned with both layout and content.  It's not like "someone else does the layout".  It's more, like, the TeX processing takes care of things like typesetting, margins, spacing, numbering (equations, sections, lists, pages), etc.  However, you have control of those things.  When you make a document, you can adjust margins, fonts, and all that stuff.  You can even set all the things up in an external style/class file, so all the controls are set in one master location.  This has a big advantage, because then other people that write a LaTeX document with the same style file can't actually change it.  (As opposed to, say, Word, where you can simply change the template.)

I mean, what makes more sense?  Hitting return and having some random number from some random pattern with some random indentation automatically appear?  Or saying

\begin{enumerate}
\item First point
\item Second point
\item
   \begin{itemize}
   \item Bullet one
   \item Bullet two
   \item Bullet three
   \end{itemize}
\item Third point
\end{enumerate}

You have complete control over the formatting there.

Well, that's where the template comes in useful. And a stern warning for people to not jack with the template.

But the people who cannot understand how not to break a Word template would be confused by LaTeX's format. It's not the tool that's the problem.

To be fair to Word here, you can easily turn off automatically making numbered lists, and can pretty easily format a non numbered list into a numbered one without much trouble.  It's the fact that the automation sucks that is trouble.

However, most of what we're talking about here is PEBIAC error anyway.

Oh fun, I get to meet with IT tomorrow to explain why my team needs SnagIt. They figure that we can use MS Office and the Windows Snipping Tool to get the same results. I'll be surprised if they show me something that can be done. I see some features SnagIt offers that don't seem possible in Office.

Is anybody here a fan of Storage Wars?  There is a game on Kickstarter (designed by one of the designers of Dead of Winter) called "Vault Wars" based on that concept.  It looks pretty good, and the price is relatively low (unless you want to spring for the deluxe version, which adds metal coins).

I"m hesitating only because I am backing a different kickstarter right now...

Storage Wars is funny to a point, as long as you realise it's all faked

I was debating whether this was better in the Song of the Day thread or here, but then 2:35 decided for me.

I had a look at this, expecting it to be shit because of the linkto Storage Wars.

I think you are selling it short as it looks quite fun quirky and interesting.

And as its only $20 and ships free to UK, I'm going to give it a punt.

Cheers for the recomendation

Ohh, grrrrr, misleading shipping charges.

If something says $20 and underneath says 'Ships Anywhere in the world' I'm sort of not expecting to have to pay anymore. It should say 'All Regions, Shipping Charges not included'

Just finished the latest draft of my Detective Hunt round London, quite pleased with it so far.

Got a run through with my girlfriend tomorrow.

That is unfortunately due to a recent change in how Kickstarter handles shipping.  Many projects used to split up reward tiers based on shipping region and actually state in the description how much shipping costs, but KS wanted it unified with shipping added separately.

I'm late, but Last Footnote and others might want to look at MIRI. It's an organization dedicated to stopping existential threat from AI.
