Title text: "Of these four forces, there's one we don't really understand." "Is it the weak force or the strong--" "It's gravity."

Or as it's known in Kansas, Intelligent Falling.

Well, it's confirmed. I suck at New York accents. But, hey, it was my first time "auditioning" with one. I'm sure it'll get better with practice. I put audition in quotes because I'll be doing a skit for training purposes, and I'm of two guys being considered for a skit with two guys. I'm going to do it; I just need to work on my accent. Good thing it's supposed to be humorous.

I know how obviously interested you all are in the fortunes of Harry Kane, so here is a quick update.

Led te line against the scummy West Ham today, and despite being outplayed we had a last 5 minute fight back led by the Hurri-Kane!

A goal ruled (correctly) offside signalled the start! Leading to a goal to bring it back to 2-1, then in the last seconds of injury time Kane bursts into the box and gets pulled down for a penalty!!

Up he steps... And it's poor, just where the keeper would want it!
But wait, the pace means the keeper can only party it, and Kanes rushing in and buries it!!!!!!
Final whistle blows, 2-2!

I just went to take an exam I was convinced was today, only to figure out it's actually on Thursday.
I'll have to rmember this trick since it gives me 3 extra days to prepare, bbut the necessity of actuallly believing in the wrong date might be a problem.

I hope it wasn't a Time Management exam

It's an exam on Special Relativity, and now he has to figure out how fast he needs to have been traveling to make it happen.

So, is anybody else worried about smarter-than-human artificial intelligence becoming a threat to humanity? Because I'm terrified of it and the people working on developing it don't seem to care.

The hype is FAR out of proportion with actual technology that exists. So my advice is, don't worry about it. There are much more realistic near-term existential threats, like climate change.

It's no big deal.  The machines already won the war.  Just relax and enjoy the matrix.

I think the bigger concern is someone programming a computer/robot that breaks Asimov's laws of robotics and exterminates human life.  I don't think the intelligence of it really matters that much...

Speaking of that song, I like it less and less every time I hear it. It's just so... generic. Fun fact, I went to school with the dude in the gold jacket.

How about this version?

If you like Harry Potter or DnD, you will probably like Harry Potter and the Natural 20 and should go read it now. I went in with lots of Harry Potter knowledge and cursory DnD knowledge and enjoyed it. I'm pretty sure if you have lots of DnD knowledge and cursory Harry Potter knowledge, you'll have a similar experience.

(You should also read Methods of Rationality, but I suspect many people here already know about it.)

This is so awesome.  Link for people too lazy to google: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8096183/1/Harry-Potter-and-the-Natural-20

Then don't read Prey by Michael Crichton.  I'm in the middle of it now, and it is a disturbing scenario.

On the other hand, I agree with blueblimp, there are other much more likely scenarios.  The one that worries me perhaps the most (though again unlikely) is EMP on a continental scale.

And no, I'm not talking about Frank Gehry architecture, though that would be pretty bad also.

See, the whole climate change hype is just fearmongering to make us ignore the impending dangers of AI.

Maybe the climate thing is coming from the AIs themselves!
