So we're apologizing for castration now?  How soon before this?

There's the question of how much merit an apology has when it's done for the sake of looking good.

Turing is a high-profile name, and the nature of his "crime" is also high profile. The apology happened after a petition was submitted. That makes the apology suspect.

If the government had done so on its own rather than be swayed by public opinion, then the apology would be more meaningful.

The fact that the apology did not extend to all others who were punished for being gay does make this look more like a publicity event. The apology looks more political than it is sincere.

I myself am not appalled by it, but I find no warmth in it either.

I can't believe the amount of press coverage in the last two weeks about the predicted chocolate shortage in the next few years.  I see a new article just about every day.

First world problem.

They can't pardon everyone.....a lot of them are still alive....and that would open them up to MASSIVE lawsuits.

Wait…I should know better than to take this seriously, but is this true? First of all, are homosexual acts still illegal in the UK? And if not, haven't all the offenders been released already? In the US, if you're in prison for a crime and that thing ceases to be a crime, I'm pretty sure you get released.

EDIT: Huh, after a little research, it would appear I am wrong. That's pretty fucked up.

I don't really know anything about this, but I'm guessing that, while they may not be in prison, they still are without testicles.

He was pardoned wasn't he?
Which means he has been forgiven for his crime...not that he was wrongly convicted.

In 1950, however wrong, it was a crime.

It could be a language thing.  We use "pardon" often to refer to someone being released from a sentence.

Yes, thats the same thing, you forgive them the crime and cancel the sentance.
You don't remove the fact they are convicted.
(You can't in fact...because then you would have nothing to officially pardon....which means they would need a pardon....argh time travel loop!)

Right, but if the punishment is something that is done to you---like castration, or the death penalty---then "canceling the sentence" doesn't really do anything.  "Ooops, we were wrong.  Sorry."

I am really liking the music made by Floating Cloud. They do Celtic arranges of Touhou songs, and it works surprisingly well.

I'm visiting KC in two weeks!  Any suggestions?

Sadly you're going to miss KC Game Fair, which is coming up this weekend.

Got any days free? Maybe we can grab a beer or BBQ.

Naturally, being a resident, I don't pay attention to the sightseeing stuff. I hear the Steamboat Arabia museum is interesting, but I've never been. Same with Liberty Memorial, which I believe is the only national WWI memorial (in America anyway). Depends on your tastes. Nelson-Atkins museum is decent, but I seem to recall you're in NYC, so you have your pick of art museums. I suppose if you are an art aficionado, then Nelson-Atkins would be good for seeing what else is out there. It also has giant shuttlecocks. That's…a big deal for some people.

If you like Christmas stuff, the Plaza will be lit up as of Thanksgiving. It's not my bag, but a lot of people really like it. And I have to admit that there are a shit-ton of lights. It's a place to walk around and listen to buskers. There's carriage/wagon rides for people who like to ride in carriages/wagons.

I could tell you my favorite Thai place, Indian place, and German place, but you could get those foods elsewhere. I presume BBQ is the food to get while you're visiting. Jack Stack is indeed pretty decent. I like Smokehouse. Out in Lee's Summit is Hickory Pit.

Many locals swear by Oklahoma Joe's (I think it's called Joe's now). It's pretty good, though I probably wouldn't swear by it. Funnily enough, I don't really have a favorite BBQ joint. I rate them all by good or fair. I generally don't find bad BBQ around here. If such a place exists, it wouldn't last long.

Sadly it turns out I only had a few hours in KC.  Flew in on Monday night and flew out on Tuesday night.  In that time I visited a law firm for a lot of hours and ate some BBQ, as per below.  I also ate at the airport restaurant which was decidedly less exciting: do I want reheated meat entree #1 or #2?

Actually, when I was there we went to this barbecue place, Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue, on W22nd street. (At least I'm almost sure that was the one, it was quite a while ago.) It was good.. huge portions.    Well reviewed online too.

This was the place that was closest by my hotel so I figured I would go.  Turns out my cabbie, the concierge, and random security guards all told me to go there.

The prime beef ribs (far right) were out of this world.

In other news Union Station is very pretty (though what is up with their museum that I walked through via The Link?) and man, Boulevard is an amazing brewery.  Apparently it's related to Ommegang brewery here in NY?  I loved all of the Boulevard beers I tried.

I see you went for the "dinosaur" sized ribs.

Which hotel did you stay at?

Westin at Crown Center.  Also pretty though breakfast there was putrid.

That's the one connected to a little mall/shopping center?  That's where I stayed, too.

Very familiar with the Westin. We have employee meetings there, and I get to partake in filming them.

Sorry you only had Monday evening. I was busy that night anyway, as it turned out.

The little museum in Union Station is a little interesting. I'm glad it's mostly just pictures on the wall, though the last time I went there for breakfast, I saw a monitor running some commentary. I usually find those annoying.

And yep, airport restaurants are never really special unfortunately.

Well, glad you got to experience good BBQ. As I said, I don't think bad BBQ would last long around here. The worst I've had was adequate.

I'm ashamed I didn't know Theory is important enough to warrant security when he travels.

I was assuming he meant random hotel and mall guards...

Kuildeous, I knew you were in the middle of the country somewhere but never actually knew where. I'm hoping to go there a couple of times in the next few months. I think my weekends would likely be super super full, but hey it's something to think about.

Cool deal. I'm up for meeting. F.DS has become my online hangout kinda. It's not like I hang out online as much as I used to, so this is a pretty good speed for me. And we all have Dominion in common, so that's pretty cool.
