I love this line so much.

Quote
She types in "cli" and, because this is TV, "Clifton Bowles" is the one and only suggested phrase. On the phone of a woman who's never heard of the guy until 10 seconds ago. Nice try; a real Bing search for "cli" reveals far more interesting search results -- especially with safe search off.

Terribly unrealistic, who uses Bing?

That quote came from a Cracked article about crazy product placement in TV shows. Apparently, Microsoft wants TV viewers to believe that cops use Bing.

Tried searching it. Not what I expected at all. No clitoris suggestion at all. Clip converter, clip art, Clive Jones, Clinton Cards etc.

Tables--the guy with the world's most boring search history.

Hey. Incognito mode is a thing.

Come on, let's go with the even more realistic option here - we're talking about Bing and nobody uses that.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

Yeah, it'd be super embarrassing if anyone found out that you've used Bing.

You can't spell eHalcyon without spelling Hal.

HAL is the primary antagonist of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

2001: A Space Odyssey is about going into space.

Space is cold.

Ice cubes are cold.

Ice cubes are found on Antartica.

Antartica has the word 'art' in it.

Art is found on the dollar bill.

And what kind of art is on the dollar bill?

Illuminati confirmed.

Antartica. At the other side of the world than Artica. Antartica has Pengins, Artica has Ice Bars. Everybody knows that. I love how you even use the spelling mistake to back the conclusion.

Also, yes, i know South Park :)

Bing is actually not that bad, it performs similarly to Google in blind trials. (You can look this up. Depending on which sources you trust, Bing performs at least within +/- a few percentage points of Google). However, Google has way better branding, and those trials are done with no prior search history. With history, Google outperforms Bing by a lot. Since people have been using Google for much longer, by the time Bing came out Google already gave most people personalized results and there was no incentive to switch.

Hm.. I read this article about Bing being the defacto engine for searching for porn.  Did someone link that from here?

Why should that matter? Is it easier to find incognito mode so 40-year olds with yealous wifes (or husbands) won't get problems? Or is there a specialized filter? Or, maybe it tailors its searches according to your history: "People who watched 'Coffee klatsch gets freaky' also liked..."

Tell me, i need to know! For... uh... science.

I've definitely seen things like that quoted online before, dunno if I saw it here.

The other thing is a search engine isn't just necessarily about the information displayed, but how it's displayed. Part of this will come down to google being familiar but in the past when I've used bing I remember disliking how the data was displayed (possibly more ad links first or big blocks of useless information to scroll past, I forget exactly).

Well, he's right. I actually do enjoy Bing juice. I showed a picture of it beforehand. It wasn't just some random image to be funny. Bing juice is actually pretty neat.

Oh, yeah, I definitely, uh, read an article about using Bing to find porn once. The conclusion of the article was that uh, yeah, it seems to work pretty well. It gives the impression of being less puritanical than Google, especially with the video results. And it has the secondary benefit of acting as a de facto incognito mode.

Sometimes I reread that article, that's how informative it was.

BGG Store has copies of Oink games.  They are a Japanese publisher and it's pretty expensive to import.  Unfortunately, the extra shipping from BGG Store is pretty high as well, enough to scare me away.  But for those of you in the US, it might be worth checking out.

The one that is most interesting to me is Deep Sea Adventure.  In short, it's a push your luck dice game where you are divers trying to bring back treasure from the ocean floor (the deeper you go, the more valuable the treasure is).  The trick is that, once you pick up treasure, you begin to deplete oxygen from the communal air supply.  It also weighs you down, reducing your movement.  When the air supply runs out, any divers who have not made it back to the sub get yanked back and drop all their treasure.

The other games look neat too.  A Fake Artist Goes to New York actually sounds hilarious, though I think you could easily play it with pen and paper.

Here's the article:

I believe there is nothing NSFW in the article itself (but maybe don't read it at work anyway), though some of the links are.

Interesting. Devilfinder is interesting, but it is probably riskier. My anti-malware software sometimes goes nuts. There's something to be said for Bing.

This makes me sad:  http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/05/opinions/marciano-america-go-metric/index.html

Quote
I readily admit that the decimal math of the metric system is easier, but not that it is in all ways better. The fact is that decimals are lousy at real-life division. Try cutting an orange or a pizza into five or ten slices. Two of the most basic fractions are the third and the quarter. A third and quarter of a foot are four and three inches; the same for a meter are 25cm and .33333-on-to-infinity cm.

They're also, you know, 1/4 and 1/3 meters.  Plus, how is four inches for a third of a foot in any way simpler than 25 cm for a quarter of a meter (or simply 0.25 m)?  Plus, 0.3~ (denoting repeating) cm is not a third of a meter, obviously.

I think just the line "A third and quarter of a foot are four and three inches" should clue in anyone that these units are not very natural to use with base-10 numbers.

Quote
Think of trying to remember different units another way. Learning other languages isn't only a benefit in the international workplace, it makes you realize that there is more than one way to approach everything in this world. The same goes for learning two systems of measurement. It allows us to recognize that distance, weight, and volume can be measured and conceived of in more than one way. Those who have grown up with only the metric system find this an alien and unpleasant concept. But don't blame them -- they've only ever had to learn one system. In the 21st century, Americans have to learn two. That's an advantage that Lincoln Chafee should embrace.

This seems like an awfully contrived argument to me.  I'm not sure that the recognition that observables can be measured and conceived of in more than one way is lost by anyone that didn't grow up with American units.  However, a good deal of intuition is lost by not growing up with metric units, since our calculations (e.g., basic physics) are natural in metric, but we need to convert the numbers back to our units to picture in our head what the event would actually be like in life.
