Um, I'm not sure what you mean.  Closed Captions and Subtitles are separate things.  They both print stuff.

Um, I'm not sure what you mean.  Closed Captions and Subtitles are separate things.  They both print stuff.

Subtitles are generally translations of the dialogue into another language.

Closed captioning also includes descriptions of sounds, and sometimes actions of screen that you can only hear, such as footsteps, for the deaf and hard of hearing.

I don't find subtitles annoying. If I'm watching a movie in English, I prefer watching it with English subtitles because sometimes characters talk in unusual accents or something and it's a bit difficult to understand as an EFL. If subtitles aren't easily available, then I'll obviously watch it without them and usually there aren't any major problems, but if it's as simple as just enabling the subtitles that I already have, I always do it by default just to make sure.

It's odd. I exclusively watch subbed anime--and I don't find the subtitles distracting at all since I have a relatively shallow knowledge of the language.
But when I'm watching a movie in English with subtitles--I find them very distracting. I wonder if both hearing the words and reading them makes it more difficult to focus?

There is a distraction to reading and hearing the dialogue. One thing that they try to teach in eLearning is to not just have the narration on the screen. And I understand that. I hate seeing a wall of text in PowerPoint (I hate seeing wall of text, period) while someone reads the whole thing aloud.

With CC, I don't mind, because they're short sentences. I absorb the text in a split second and then listen to the dialogue. And it does help me grok everything on the screen. Sometimes words are muffled or obfuscated by loud noise. Sometimes I'm just not in the best place.

I suppose growing up with CC, I learn to watch everything holistically. The words on the screen are part of the scene. It's like how I have nonprinting characters turned on in Word. I work better knowing what is on the screen.

I agree with Kuildeous.  CC also helps me when people mumble or slur words or something.  When CC isn't available (e.g. with some streaming video), sometimes I have to repeat a scene multiple times to figure out what somebody is saying, if I can figure it out at all.

Subtitles are generally translations of the dialogue into another language.

In French "closed captioning" is called "subtitles for deaf and hard-of-hearing people", so I thought CC was just a type of subtitles.

Well, speaking generally it is, but subtitles that come with, say, physical version (e.g., DVD) of a TV show or movie, or those that appear in theater, are separate from the "Closed Caption" option that you enable on your TV.

Well, I've never done a test, but I bet if you get a DVD and choose the "Subtitles" option in the DVD setup, and then turn on Closed Captions on your TV, you will get two separate sets of stuff appearing.

When I was little, I loved fullscreen. I could never understand why my dad loved widescreen. I hated those black bars. Now it's obviously way better because TVs aren't square anymore.

I have a 4-minute long full-HD 60 fps 88.6 GB wmv file and I'm trying to convert it to an avi file of a reasonable file size (like maybe around 500 MB or 1 GB or something like that) without losing too much quality (it's going to get re-rendered twice after this and it should still be of high quality after that) on Windows. I tried Avidemux, Vegas and Windows Live Movie Maker, but the file made them all crash on my computer. Would anyone happen to know how to do this?

Often subtitles give context and clues otherwise missed such as the title of a song in the background or that someone is whistling.

I am a huge subtitle fan and almost can't bear to watch things without them.

I use subtitles if its late and people are trying to sleep. Or if I don't understand the spoken language in the film.

I love this line so much.

She types in "cli" and, because this is TV, "Clifton Bowles" is the one and only suggested phrase. On the phone of a woman who's never heard of the guy until 10 seconds ago. Nice try; a real Bing search for "cli" reveals far more interesting search results -- especially with safe search off.

Tried searching it. Not what I expected at all. No clitoris suggestion at all. Clip converter, clip art, Clive Jones, Clinton Cards etc.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.
