The kingdom: storeroom,steward,maurader,bureaucrat,smithy,fortress,scout,duke,harvest,peddler

Ok, so, straight-forward IRL game, right? I mean, smithy/BM with steward, fortress, and peddler to support it. Guess not. I opened silver/smithy while my opponent opened steward/marauder. I figured I could steward trash the ruins he gave me and be fine with that. He won, with 8 fortresses, 2 marauders, and only 1 steward. What could I have done better (maybe I should've piledrove scout)?

Open Storeroom/Bureaucrat and go for Duke, I'd say.

I think that the engine is a possibility here, though you need the storeroom for +buy. If you can work Bureaucrat into the engine it's going to hurt the storeroom/duke strategy quite a bit I believe. The question is handling the extra silvers, but storeroom and steward might help with that.

Edit: To the OP, if you're going for an engine, you probably want to open steward/steward. Steward can handle the junk from Marauder but you have to be quick with it. Also any engine here is going to need +buy.

You could've opened Steward/Marauder, like your opponent did. I think he made the right move.

There's a fortress/smithy/steward/storeroom/peddler engine in there and that's probably worth going for. Marauders could fit into it too. If ruins and peddlers go low, a three pile ending might cut off any big duke scoring.

If you want to trash with a steward then buy it immediately. It's much easier to keep a small deck clean than to clean up a big deck.
