Moral quandry....about travelling to work
« on: May 07, 2014, 06:35:18 pm »

So, if i get the train to work i get there at 8:58, but i dont get home till 7:10
If i drive to work i am often delayed by bad traffic and dont get in till 9:15 ish, and often the car park is full and i have to go to the overflow which is another 10 minutes. BUT i get home at 6:45

What to do, what to do.

Now the obvious amswer is just drive, screw it. However it doesnt really set a good example to the rest of the team im in charge ofw, especailly as 7 of them are supposed to be manning phones from 9 on the dot.

Why couldn't you just leave earlier?

Not an option for me, I struggle to get up early enough as it is!

I have been having similar problems with traveling to school; if I take the bus, I'm there three hours too early and if I drive, I could get lucky and be on time or be a few minutes late.

Oftentimes, it's just best to stay home entirely. That way, you don't have to deal with the moral dilemma!

Man, I didn't realize traffic was that awful in Tuvalu.

Despite being someone who utterly hates rising early, I have to agree that the answer to the moral dilemma is to set an earlier alarm and take a slightly earlier train.  But then I have no idea what the schedule is like; there's a huge difference between trains running every ten minutes and trains every two hours.

----

In answer to your other question, my commute time is zero for my main job, as stay-at-home dad tends to happen mostly at home (but involves driving to pre-school, museums, zoos, parks, etc.)  My part-time job has a full cross-town commute and takes 20 minutes if I leave a bit early to miss rush-hour traffic.  Living in the midwest means there is no public transportation to speak of.

If I leave before 7, 30 minutes. If I leave after 7, 45-50 minutes. I've been leaving before 7 lately.

About 7 minutes. Not as good as jsh, but still nice to be able to roll out of bed at 8 and still be at work by 8:30.

Take the train to work.  Hire someone to drive you car from your home to your work.  Drive home.

In Tuvalu we would travel round on the back of Elephants especially imported for that purpose (and as fire engines)

But not sure how that's relevant in a journey across London....

Driving in London? Not worth the risk!

10 minute bike ride (not across London) for me.  PSA: people massively underestimate the value of a short commute.  Make it a priority when you're looking for somewhere to live.

Not central london. I start in the south and head further south.

Biking is bit an option, too far.

And I used to work in the same town as my office, 8 mins walk, and now they have moves the office an hour away, hating it

My dad is a pastor, and we moved to about one mile away from church.  It's really nice being that close since we can easily walk to and from it.

Is carpooling an option with any of your fellow workers? Maybe you could take the train there and carpool back? Or vice versa?

Have you considered reverting back from British Summer Time? You'd arrive at 8h15 that way, way earlier than your coworkers.

Go by train, and use the fact that when you're on the train you don't need to think about driving to do something else. Time in a car is way deader than time on a train, even a commuter train.

That is true, but it wouldnt make up the 30 extra minutes i lose by going that way

You don't really lose all that time though. What navical was pointing out was that you could use those 30 minutes to read a book, surf the internet, play dominion with a random stranger. You can't do that while driving.

I didn't mean move jobs!  I meant a dwelling closer to the job.  Caveat, I have exactly no clue what housing markets are like in Britain.

Housing markets are awful, especially in London, going up about 10% a year.
2 bedroomed flats in really crappy areas are about £180k at the moment.
To buy an actual house anywhere in London where your likely not to get stabbed on your doorstep is at least £300k

Moving closer isn't an option, as work is in the middle of nowhere and I like to go out in london

Ah, yeah, if you like to go out on the town moving nearer to work isn't that great.

I won't tell you what the housing market is like here, as you would have cause to hate me.  And the US midwest in general.
