It's fun but I think what it's missing is limiting the number of options players have. Like the first level give players 1 house, 1 factory, 4 farms, 2 offices or something so they aren't overwhelmed by the possibilities.

The possibilities are what make it fun!

The possibilities are what make it fun!
It's cool for the final levels of a game or a "freeplay" mode.  But when you're first learning a game it's daunting. I'm also a game creator so I'm brainstorming what it might need to work.

I wouldn't say something's "missing," but I think the direction to go for broader appeal would be to add randomness.

I concur, but maybe this is because I am bad at this game.  It's the same reason I like Ra over Medici.

I was struggling to get over ~60 on Level 1, and wondering how the heck anyone got over 100, when I discovered that you can build on the dark green squares! Why are they there if you can build on them???

You'll have to ask Kevin. I did note both that the two grasses were the same and that two Farms by a House add together in the OP.

I had a similar layout as you for a while and a score around 120-130.
Then I started doing two factories, and two houses.
With some farms along the edges, and as many offices i could fit in, I now have 180.

Yeah, I just threw mine together. I'm certain it's far from optimal however (as your additional $500 demonstrates). But I was in a similar situation. Room to add a handful of Offices (I think 4), but each one shoots my score down.

You can do a lot better with "one factory four houses" by not spacing them like that. Have one house touch each side of the factory instead, and then there will be places where offices touch two houses at once.

But yes, theorel's advice is key.
