Today I Learned: The difference between frying and baking.
Fun fact: this difference doesn't really exist in Dutch, both are translated to "bakken".

I'm pretty sure that other Dutch people know the difference between frying and baking.  If not, your french fries and chicken wings must totally suck.
You really really can bake both crisps (which are in origin Belgian, not French, iirc) and chicken wings, and they come out just fine, if you know what you're doing.

French fries are indeed belgian, which is well-known in France (we have a lot of dumb Belgian jokes revolving around it), and made the whole Freedom Fries thing sadly hilarious.

Ah, so fries are Belgian in origin, not "crisps". "Crisps" seem to have been invented in North America, if you can believe Wikipedia.

Indeed. My mind was not working properly, apparently. You can certainly bake crisps, but you can bake chips, too.

baked chicken wings are excellent, fwiw.  They're already quite fatty enough, and you can get skin nice and crispy if you do it right.  have had success with this recipe: http://americanfood.about.com/od/appetizersandsoups/r/bufchicwing.htm

You can bake French fries (chips), but what you end up with isn't so much a French fry as it is a sliced baked potato.  To get that crisp outside your really need direct contact with something hot and above 200 °C... oil just happens to provide that on all sides at once.  Baking just doesn't cut it for that...

Yeah, you can definitely bake french fries, I do it all the time, just cut them into the familiar shape, add salt, and cook at like, 350°F for an hour or so, flipping them every 20-30 min... I prefer making wedges, myself.

Ideally, twice fried. Even though baked potato wedges are delicious, they are not french fries.

Depends on the situation. In a fast food restaurant, you eat them with your fingers. If you have french fries at a classy restaurant, you eat them with a fork.

I'm trying to imagine any restaurant I would think of as classy serving French fries.

Nope.

Real men don't eat at classy restaurants.

It's a pretty tedious life all round really; I don't envy them.

It's not. In fact it alarms me that you would think it is, do you dirty Americans generally eat fried stuff with your hands ?

French fries are generally considered finger food.  It's most commonly found as fast food alongside burgers, which is also eaten without utensils.  Common to North America, I believe.  Canada and US, at least.
