Dungeon Crawl Tournament - dominificated - 1 Match complete!
« on: February 27, 2014, 01:40:36 am »

Dungeon Crawl is a roguelike game, a genre of single player PC games much like old school RPGs, except with an emphasis on randomly generated maps and the brutal finality of death.  Several players in this forum have been playing it and discussing it.

Dominion challenges our concept of how fun a multiplayer game that easily divides into single player can actually be.  As a result, I've designed a 1v1 competitive format for Crawl so that people in this forum can add some rivalry to the single player experience.

If you're reading this and you haven't played Crawl at all, you should know that:

1. Crawl is free to download.
2. Crawl is open source, free as in speech.  This makes it incredibly unlikely that glitches are a gamebreaking aspect of competing.
3. There's a built in tutorial which is rather good
4. No one on this forum that we know of has beaten it yet.  The game is designed around the risk that any attempt to beat the game could rather likely result in permanent failure.
5. There's lots of luck involved.  Combined with 4, this means that if you download the game, play the tutorial and kick the tires around for a couple hours you stand a chance against anyone else.
6. It's totally turn based, you can step away from the game at any time
7. You can probably play from work or school if you want to, without downloading.  The interface is slightly less friendly though

That's about as much space as I'd like to spend selling the game to people.
________________________________________________________________________________________

The format for matches in the tournament is based on drafting.  It is analogous to choosing which type of engine or whether to go BM in a Dominion game.  Unlike a dominion game, a game of crawl takes much longer than an hour, so mirror matches need be thrown out.

When your match starts with another player, I will generate two random "character configurations".  A character configuration includes a starting species, the background (class) to choose, the starting weapon to select, and what religions the character is allowed to worship.  Everything but the last is a natural part of creating a new character, the last is an external rule to add more strategy to the competition: the character will be prohibited from worshipping gods besides the 1, 2, or 3 randomly selected.

You and your opponent will each secretly decide which character configuration you consider more powerful and PM the choice to me.  If your choices match, those two configs are thrown out and a new pair is used and the process repeats.  Eventually, you and your opponent will select different configs as being more powerful.

Once that happens, you are assigned the configuration you chose.  You get to do exactly 3 runs with that configuration.  You have ten days (tentative deadline), can do it whenever you like, and simply report your results by PM honestly.  Only the most successful run counts.  Whichever player has the most successful run wins the match.

The successfulness of a run is defined as follows:
A run that wins the game is always more successful than one that doesn't.
A run that ends with more runes collected is more successful than one that ends with fewer.
Runs that end with the same number of runes, but different types of runes, may take priority over eachother, roughly based on difficulty.  As follows:

Icy
Obsidian
Iron
Bone
Golden
Dark
Glowing
Magical
Fiery
Demonic
Slimy***
Silver
Barnacled or Gossamer or Decaying or Serpentine

***If one of the gods in your configuration is Jivya, who allows you to take the Slimy rune without combat, then the Slimy rune is treated as having less priority than Barnacled.  It still counts as a rune though, so 4 runes including slimy beats 3 runes no matter what those three are.

If things are still tied, the deepest floor of the main dungeon/zot reached breaks the tie, for failure runs, and lower turns taken breaks the tie for successful runs.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________

I'm aiming to get 4 people for round robin, who's in?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________

I found a download link here: the official site seems to be down, but since it's an open source game it's naturally easy to find a copy anyplace.  http://sourceforge.net/projects/crawl-ref/

/in.

Maybe to speed up the process, make configs in batch of 3-5 ? (also, morgues would be nice).

3-5 pairs at a time is probably a good idea, I guess.

I don't like the only random gods rule though. I think crawl is hard enough as is.

Edit: Unless all random gods chosen were viable. I'm not sure how to determine if gods are viable though.

It is the same as Stone Soup.

You can download it here.

It's just that their website found the most unfortunate time do go down; it should be back up soon, I hope.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is one of the most newbie friendly roguelikes.  I only learned it three weeks ago or something.
______________________________________________
It's Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, current version is 0.13.  I should have put Stone Soup up there, but I try to refer to the game as Dungeon Crawl when I can since Stone Soup was something they appended to celebrate a new version they were particularly proud of (0.10, maybe), and they might change that to something else soon.
__________________________________________
You can play on your own box, or on Webtiles.

You may wipe all your ghosts before your first run, and you may wipe all your ghosts before each run if you wish.
You may NOT cherrypick ghosts from your own files and remove them.
You may NOT make suicide characters that have the intention of producing weak ghosts.
You need to decide whether you want to wipe ghosts before run1 before you find out what background you will be playing.  Waiting to find out you're playing a caster and then wiping your ghost files is frowned upon.
If you chose to wipe all, it's okay to wipe run 1 or run 1&2 based on what kind of ghost was created.  Before run 3, you must wipe both previous runs or neither, cherrypicking is considered non-kosher in crawl in general.

With sample size 3, it is probably easier to win if you wipe before the tournament.  Ghosts contribute to risks without providing item drops, it would seem doubtful the bit of experience is worthwhile.  I'm recommending everyone wipe their ghost files and play on their own boxes, but I don't want to impair anyone who prefers to play on Webtiles (where ghosts are mandatory) from participating.  They can play but expect to have a slight disadvantage.
_______________________________________________________________________________________
I'm not budging on the random gods, I think it is an important way of adding more skill to matches without increasing the sample size of games.  I'm not sticking to viable gods, I don't even intend to stick to viable classes: every class but wanderer can be picked (forgot to mention that exclusion, but wanderer is excluded because it conceals more pregame information than other classes).

The runs may be harder than normal crawl runs, but you don't have to beat the game, you have to beat the other player, who hopefully you outsmarted into picking an even weaker god.  Lower average power level is a good thing in terms of administrating a tournament, if we have a twelve rune run, a twelve rune run, and a thirteen rune run against a 3,6,14, that will take ages for us to get results back.

If you truly think things are corrupted such that progress is nigh impossible, I encourage you to cheat the system, max out Stealth, and see how deep in the dungeon you can get without dying and hope to win on 0 rune tiebreak.  You run the risk of someone clearing shoals at least once, or even dashing into spider pit with rPois and grabbing the last rune, then dying.  All this is to point out that in a competitive format weak gods don't ruin the game because success is redefined, just like Sea Hag - cultist game where 12 VP might be a winning score.

I'll let signups simmer a bit to see if heron has posted yea or nay on his participation, and see how shraeye feels about the game.

I can make myself available on instant message if you need help with anything.  I'll put a download link in the OP right now.

EDIT: by right now I guess I mean when I'm at a different computer, the library pcs aren't playing nice it seems.

What if it's a class that starts with a god? Berzerker's for instance. I'm pretty sure there's others.

Religious backgrounds will get 1-3 gods, one of which will always be the god that they start with.

Except the species Demigods, no matter their background they can only worship Xom, Lugonu, Cheibrados, Beogh, or Ashenzari.

Check the OP for a download link.  Webtiles does indeed lack a tutorial and lack hints mode.

You'll figure out what a religion is naturally if you make it a few floors without dying.

I'm assuming there's a policy of 'no practice runs'? Considering it's built into the round structure anyway, and we're all on the honor system.

BTW, just one hit KO'd Sigmund on Dungeon:2 with my sneaky Spriggan Assassin, there's a good feeling :)

Also, when generating the build match-ups, you might consider discarding any viable vs. non-viable. I don't trust myself to go against the game's opinion yet so I would just pick the viable one each time. Maybe sticking to viable v. viable or non-viable v. non-viable would speed up the process.

I'm gonna use large batches to keep things going quickly.  I'll post several pairs at a time and wait for pms on all the pairs, the earliest one that produces disagreement is the one I'll use.  Viable vs. non-viables should be pretty easy choices for the players and not add much thinking time.

He is really annoying if he gets a bunch of summons off. You need to be able to smash your way through to him or to kill him with a cloud spell usually. What were you playing as?

When you see a unique, usually you want to use 'x', drag your cursor over to it, then hit 'v'.  That describes him, and says whether it's "extremely dangerous" or "dangerous".  That gives you a rough idea of how tough the unique is, although I might fear Sigmund even if my level is high enough that he is described as "dangerous" and I might try to kill Psyche even if she is described as "extremely dangerous".

But for most extremely dangerous uniques, you want to skip the floor and keep progressing in the dungeon.  When you've cleared several more floors, you can go back up to the unique with your newfound strength and kill the unique for the experience and items.

If the unique tries to trap you into a one on one fight, use any escape abilities you have to flee, even the drastic scroll of teleportation if you must.

If there are no objections, I'll start running the tournament tomorrow, with shraeye, Jorbles, Walrus, and Grujah has entrants.  I won't enter myself because it should work better with an even number of entrants.

i'm doing a training montage.  Except it consists of looking at the tutorials.  And they're minimally helpful so far.

Also, it's really hard for me to skip a level in a dungeon.  I'm the kinda guy who has to explore every room and hallway.

Librigraz: Tritheistic Centaur Necromancer of Elyvilon, Fedhas Madhas, and the Slime god
Elcrow:Monotheistic Tengu Gladiator of Ashenzari, falchion in hand

Grujah and shraeye, please PM me the names of the characters you prefer from each pair.  The earliest of the pairs that produce a disagreement will determine the classes you play.  If you agree on all 4 pairs, more will be generated.

DO NOT COMMENT ON STRATEGY IN THREAD
Jorbles versus WalrusMcFish
Config Drafting

Config pair 1
Opothekitch: Bitheistic Ogre Venom Mage of Vehemut and Yredelemnul
Entropyrus: Tritheistic High Elf Fire Elementalist of Mahkleb, the Shining One, and Xom

Config pair 2
Gloinuss: Bitheistic Deep Dwarf Enchanter of Sif Muna and Zin
Bob:  Monotheistic Human Death Knight of Yredelemnul

Config pair 3
Refliseptus: Bitheistic Vampire Ice Elementalist of Mahkleb and Ashenzari
T. M. 28: Bitheistic Gargoyle Death Knight of Yredelemnul and the Slime god

Config pair 4
Frostbite: Bitheistic Draconian Ice Elementalist of Vehemut and Ashenzari
Esma: Monotheistic Naga Chaos Knight of Xom

You two have similar instructions to Grujah and Jorbles.

You can use wikis and the learndb database to collect information, and you can create a character and stand in front of the entrance gate to look at stats.  Finding any information is ok, it's just not okay to ask for advice or analysis.  You can ask in thread right here a question like "Are halflings immune to mutations?", but not a question like "Would a halfling that worships the Slime god be good?"

Walrus pointed out I made a mistake, Gargoyle Death Knight is a forbidden class.  Whatever pick is made for that pairing will be ignored, only the other three count.

You're welcome to use the wiki and study, or you can just wing it.  I would ask that you not pick based on cool names, since I made them up, and I wouldn't like to actually influence things that much.  At least pick based on the species, class, or gods.

yeah, i'll pick mostly based on the species/class/gods.  If I'm set to worship a god, does that mean taht's the only god that I'm allowed to worship, assuming I find their altar...or do I start out automatically worshipping them?

The former.  Each set has up to three gods, and you can worship no gods aside from those.  You don't have to worship any of them if you don't want to.  You can only have one religion at one time, but you can switch between gods over the course of your run.  It's not recommended for you to leave a god, because if you do that god will try to kill you, and the gods in DCSS are as powerful as, well, gods.  The exception is TSO, Elyvilion, and Zin, they will be upset, but they won't punish you unless you go worship an evil god.

All gods are guaranteed to have an altar somewhere in floors 1-9 except Beogh, Jiyva, and Lugonu.  Jiyva has a guaranteed altar in the Slime Pits in Lair.  You don't have guaranteed access to Lugonu.

There are five backgrounds that automatically start out worshiping a god: Beserkers (Trog), Death Knights (Ydredemnul), Chaos Knights (Xom), Abyssal Knights (Lugonu), and Healers (Elyvilion).  If a config uses one of those backgrounds, then it starts out worshipping that god with 1 * of piety.

The gauntlet has been thrown!

Though Walrus and Jorbles agreed on every other pair presented, Walrus McFish regards Bloopex, the Fire Elementalist of Trog, Ashenzari, and Fedhas Madash as a powerful adventurer.  Has Jorbles never witnessed that a furious Blooper will borrow a fire flower from the great Piranha plant, and spit flames wherever it wanders!

Jorbles, however, has the utmost faith in the resourcefulness of Digrat.  Though teaching a normal type rat to dig might seem like a curse and not a blessing, with some Leftovers it can hide and eat all the time and out of battle it can conjure a useful escape.

It's recommended you two wipe your ghost files now.  You have ten days from whenever Grujah and shraeye finish up to finish 3 runs.
Every other day or so, please PM me updates on your progress. The only purpose in that is that if one player finishes all three runs, and another is midrun but has already beaten all three of those runs, I can call the match early, which frees up the victorious player to play other characters or whatever and save finishing that run for later.

I'm going to do one run of each type that actually gets drafted on my own time, just for fun, amusement, and comparison.  I won't release the results until after the match, of course

The official site being down makes life a lot harder, so I couldn't find an incredibly straightforward way to wipe the ghost files, aside from reinstalling.  Since it's such a small file when you install the game, it's not such a big deal I guess.  If you use Linux, it might be 10 times easier to find your ghost files and nuke them.

I reinstalled, and it didn't wipe my high scores, but did reset my init file (I know because the eating shortcut I set reverted).  I'm 90% sure that got the ghost files too.  Which is nice that you can keep your high scores.

I on the other hand dislike Octopodes. I thought this was the most likely one we would play. Though I thought there was a chance we might diverge on Nightcrawler and Ragdoll.

Bloopex juggled the horseshoe amongst all eight of his arms, until finally gripping it and hurling it towards the stake.  It hid dead center, and right as it struck he gave it a loud blast of fire for good measure.  "FOOM!".
The horseshoe became hot enough to melt and merge with the stake.  "Just to be sure.  Melted gold is still gold, so that's six points."

Digrat scowled at him, then hid a smirk. Bloopex only had a 3 point lead now but there was only one horseshoe left.  He had broken the Penultimate Gold Horseshoe Rule.

He cast a couple Magic Darts at the stake, to practice his aim.  None of them missed, that was a good sign.  Then he wound up, took a strong step forward, and threw the horseshoe...

which threw itself back.  It whirled around and reversed direction after traveling just six inches, than narrowed and shrunk, fastening itself around Digrat's wrist and glowing with text in Latin.  Damn Latin.  Digrat hated Latin.

Bloop fell back onto a flower patch, laughing in a gurgly glee.  "Ah haha, you threw it, and then it came back.. ahahaHAHA!"  His tentacles waved in the air uncontrollably, he could hardly stop laughing.
He waddled over to the sign he had setup for such occasions: "It has been {3} days since Digrat-" RIP! "It has been {0} days since Digrat has had an accident and cursed himself".

Digrat stamped the ground. "You know what? I'm sick of you and your disrespect.  I'm going to go get your family's barnacled rune of Zot and throw it in some lava.  Maybe grab the Orb while I'm at it, and come back a hero.  Definitely the first thing though.  Eat rot, Bloopex".

By the time Bloopex was done laughing and realized what he had heard, Digrat had already left.  "Wait... crap.. I'm pretty sure my parents said that I'm a disgrace to Trog for practicing magic and that they barely won't disown me entirely unless I let something happen to the rune.  Better go in there. Grahhh."

He trod over to the dim doorway, eight steps at a time.

Though the fourth pair also produced a disagreement, the earliest pair Grujah and shraeye disagreed on was the third.

Grujah believes in the power of Davikraken, the conjurer of the seven seas that sinks ships with arcane blasts from his tentacles.  He raises men back up afterwards as slaves, putting a demon whip in each tentacle to keep them working.

shraeye, however, believes a mutiny is in order.  Solariska found some toxic junk in the hull, and he's training himself how to use it.  He'll show Davikraken that being alive can be a liability, and a voice in his head keeps explaining how.

Ghosts aren't recorded for floors one or two, so if you haven't made any super scary characters past floor 3 yet, you might be able to get away with skipping the reinstall and doing your runs directly, shraeye.  Grujah, you can take or leave the recommendation to remove the myriad of ghosts for an edge.

You're good to go then.  You might want to put the floor seven guy on hold for your other runs.  I've never done that, I only know it's possible because Heron mentioned it.

I think you probably just hit capital s while you're playing, then reopen crawl, rename your character, and go to new. (I think the way heron mentioned it the renaming might be important.  You rename by just typing in while you're at the main menu, you don't have to even click the name box which is weird)

Website is back up!

Deleting ghosts:

Go to your crawl/saves folder (it is ~/.crawl/saves for me, I'm on Linux), delete all files named bones.* (* are floor names).
I actually just cut/pasted them somewhere else, so that I can return them later.

Jorbles has won his first match over WalrusMcFish!  Walrus completed his three runs and his best one reached DL8, no runes.  Although Jorbles' first run was no better than that, his second run is ongoing and has reached DL9.  So Jorbles could kill himself and win, e.g., it's over like the top of the ninth inning.

Jorbles is welcome to finish Digrat's run without the god restriction, although it could be nice to demonstrate how much of a margin over Walrus's drafting and play he can manage.

We are waiting on some combination of Grujah and shraeye to finish so that we can proceed to the next round of round Robin.

I'll keep going with Digrat the II and see how he does. I've already found the Ecumenical Temple and converted to Ashenzari so I'll stick with that. I'm curious to hear how Bloopex faired. My first run with Digrat ended with me constantly running from things after I had to escape Sigmund by running downwards. (and then kept running from threat after threat until I died somewhere on the 5th or 6th level). This second one is going better. I'll post the morgue file of it and my thoughts when I finish.

You can't rename, AFAIK.

What pop means is, delete the name in top of the screen, than press "play", new character will be created. (or write in the new name).

Bascially, you write the name of the char that you want to play. If such name doens't exist, new char is made. Defualt name is last char played.

Digrat returned to D8 for a rest break between bouts of ownage on D9.  While he was there he saw an octopode corpse, lying on the ground.  It was Bloopex, with eight arrows stuck in his body.  "Pobrecito.  Guess arrows hit hard when you have low AC".  He picked them out, one at a time.  By the time he was done removing them, the body had rotted.  No matter.  He cut Bloopex's rotted corpse into eight pieces and gobbled them.
I see why they say this is a delicacy.  Well, that's all the vengeance I need, but I may as well keep going and see if I can get that lifelong fame and all

So, you read a TP wand, then quaffed a random potion which turned out to be paralysis? Harsh.

Ring is nice, and so are the wands, but not much like with the rest :P

Why train everything? I'd focus on getting Charms and Fire up, to get Fireball more reliable, make Battlespehere more powerful and maybe get that Haste going.

The wands were actually bad luck given that my god was Ashenzari and I was trying to build piety by keeping a cursed weapon equipped. Ashenzari was not an amazing god, and it was really difficult to build piety up. I don't think it's the variety of skill training that killed me here anyways. The wands could have saved me if I hadn't been following Ashenzari. I probably should have read a remove curse scroll to use the wands in the fight. I spent a large portion of my first fight with Nergalle sitting next to her waiting for Death's Door to wear off while she was almost only to have her recast it before it timed out. Oh well, I was playing a little riskier once I knew I'd won. I wanted to get back to my MiBe that's on the final level of the Spider Nest.

Why aren't Solriska and Devikraken getting the awesome flavor?
The way I wrote their backstory I have more idea about how to write their climax than how to add any more rising action.  For that, the round needs to end.

What? You don't need to wield wands to use, you can use them while your weapon is cursed.

Seriously? I thought you needed to have them equipped to evoke them. How do you use them?

thematically it makes little sense.  And there are these rare staffs in the game that also producse spell effects, but you have to wield those to use them, which is consistently inconsistent.  In 0.14 Felids will somehow be able to use wands even though they can't grasp small objects well enough to throw them

Huh, well that would have been really handy to know. There's so many little quirks to this game.

for future reference, you should not wait until you get into a dangerous situation to start using a wand.  You usually want to use-ID it by casting it on a distant minion, preferably a weak one.  (this is usually worth the saved ID scroll, because quaff IDing is much more dangerous than wand use IDing.)

Huh, well that would have been really handy to know. There's so many little quirks to this game.
If Felids get the Blade Hands mutation, they get the bonus damage like anyone else; however, since they walk on all four legs and metal is noisy against stone, they get a major penalty to stealth.

There's lots of nuances.

thematically it makes little sense.  And there are these rare staffs in the game that also producse spell effects, but you have to wield those to use them, which is consistently inconsistent.  In 0.14 Felids will somehow be able to use wands even though they can't grasp small objects well enough to throw them

Rods and decks you need to equip, wands no.

I am also quite irked that you need to actually equip a chunk for Sublimation of Blood.

You have to equip stones to optimally use sandblast too.

Nemelex followers don't have to equip decks to use them, which is huge.

shraeye and Grujah, you have 4 days left for your runs.  If you do not finish all, your best one is used.

I've finished mine (some time ago). No rush, tho, shra.

My run #1 was particularly fun.

i have no idea what a deck is.  I'm starting another run today.  Sorry if I don't get all 3 in but I'm trying hard on the runs I make.  But regardless, I'm having a fun time exploring a new game.

A deck is a type of rare item.

Grujah I knew you were finished, but there is some amount of strategic info divulged by saying so I made announcements as though you hadn't.

I know, I know. You are keeping it as low info as possible, for no amount of advantage for any player.  ;D

Solariska gritted his teeth, glancing at the vile chemicals he had hidden in his leg pocket.  Not his pants pocket, his leg pocket, ghoul skin gets flappy, so stop being judgmental why don't you.  He knew everyone on this ship would tolerate the Mephitic Cloud he could bust out, except Maurice, who was only pretending to be dead, but he had that bandana he always kept over his mouth so he would be fine.

"Maaaaurisssse" Solariska whispered.  He thought of himself as stealthy, in reality he was beyond loud enough for Davikraken to hear all the chatter while they swabbed the deck, he just didn't give enough damns to pay attention to it.
"Yeah?"
"I need you to go snatch Davikraken's potions of curing.  Then I can bust out a cloud and the ship will be ours."
"Ok"
Maurice didn't really listen to the second sentence.  If you suggested stealing something that was pretty much what he would do.
Maurice snuck up behind Davikraken, but Davikraken was level 12.  "What are you doing?" he asked as he snapped around.  He picked up Maurice by the neck, ghouls don't need to breathe to answer questions.  When Maurice's neck snapped and his eyes stopped moving he realized Maurice wasn't actually a ghoul after all.  Davikraken chuckled mirthfully.  "That explains a lot."  He fished through Maurice's possessions and found an amulet of clarity.  "Aha, I didn't misplace that after all".  He put it on, then thanked Kikubuqghda for delivering him another corpse. "Wi te pakoaoo me kikkini affun".
Maurice arose from the dead, a ghoul.
"Get back to swabbing the deck".
And so things returned to routine.

Shraeye will now face Jorbles, and Grujah will face Walrus McFish.

I'm going to change the rules slightly for the second round, with the goal of bringing head to head strategy closer to normal single players strategy.

Firstly, a modification of the definition of how successful a run is:
Quote
Less important than rune count and identity, and more important than main dungeon exploration, is "best (highest HD) unique thoroughly defeated".  There are many things you can ~do~ to a unique in crawl, so ~defeat~ can seem a subjective term.  This how "thoroughly defeated" is defined for our purposes:  If you received an amount of experience based on the unique's HD or identity, and you also caused its item drops to be accessible to you, you have thoroughly defeated it.
If the unique dies and doesn't drop any items, it has to have died in a way that you would be able to get 1 gold if it had had 1 gold in its pocket.
You don't have to actually collect the drops.
Receiving experience based on its HD means that its HD has to be a cause of why you gained how much experience you actually did.  For instance, draining a monster will subtract 1 from its HD and give you slightly less experience, but since (HD-1) is based on the original HD, that counts.  Polymorphing a monster transforms it into another monster with HD that is based on its former HD, so if you then kill that new monster, you'll get experience based on the unique's HD.

Slimify converts a monster into a slime that always has a fixed, low HD, so if you kill that slime and receive experience, it doesn't count because that's not tied to the unique's HD.

As a fun, extreme case, you can roll a Merfolk Abyssal Knight, Banish Ijylb to the Abyss (which gives you 50% of the normal amount of experience as killing it, tied to the normal value), then banish yourself to the Abyss, watch a neutral monster confuse Ijylb, watch Ijylb walk into deep water giving you no additional experience, then walk away and it counts, because as a Merfolk you can swim in deep water to collect Ijylb's drops, and you received experience based on Ijylb's HD back when you banished it.

And as a second rules modification, to nerf slime god a bit and hopefully let it see play
Quote
In addition to the low priority rule, if one of your gods is the slime god, the slimy rune of zot does not count towards your rune total unless you have two or more other runes.

As a special note, these two rule tweaks have a small link: While the passivity of the royal jelly is less useful for bolstering your rune count, you can however take a legendary dagger, drink a potion of might, and brutally brutusly stab the royal jelly in the back to improve your "best unique thoroughly defeated".  The slime god and the other slimes on the floor might not like that at all, but if no one else kills an HD21 unique...

This was my thinking during char choosing, will post analasys of my morgue later (bit drunk ATM):

Ratalla: NaBe of Trog, spear
Milisimon: TeNe of Kiku, Xom or Zin

This was actually hard. Both are strong.
I don't like playing Nagas that much as you are so slow which means that one wrong decision can completely wreck you. But, as a Berserker you have a powerful panic button that can get you out of many jams (esp with super high health).
Tengus and Necros are something I do enjoy, and you do get the best Necro god. Frail but powerful combo, though, the problem was that I knew that even though shra is new, Zerkers can make pretty good runs and It wouldn't be unlikely that he beats me.

-----

Copplini: NaFi of Mahkleb, short sword
Iatodavid: GrAM of Oka, Sif or Vehumet, sling

Ok, we got a melee naga again, but a worse one. Even though Mahk is great, losing the panic button does make it quite harder.
OTOH, Gargoyles are pretty strong race, Oka is great god for archer (I wouldn't really go for others, though they are a possibility), you have claws and talons as great backup weapon.. It was more reliable.
-----
Solariska: GhVM of Vehumet
Davikraken: OpCj of Kiku, Oka and Y

Ok, Venom Mage got the superior god, and being immune to poison makes some spells easier on you (Cloud, Radiance), but Ghoul has such low starting INT that I didn't think he is a competant caster.
Octopedes are good casters, I am very comfortable with Cjs, Kiku is not that great of a good but can serve a purpose. (Oka is horrible, Y is meh).

-------
Librigraz: CeNe of Evylion, Fedhas or Jiyva
Elcrow: TeGl or Ashe, Falchrion

I don't think Centaurs are competant as casters, also, God choice aren't very good either.
TeGl might be a bit frail, but you get loads of Evasion with flying and are good at both dodging at armor and weapons, so this build is good. Ashe is not Oka, but OK god here.

whoa, you thought that out way more than me.  And gave me much more credit than I deserve in my thinking process.

#1 Naga Berserker.  That means that I'm like a snake-dude who hulks out; that's badass.  Tengu, I'm not sure what that is, probably sucks.

#2 Hey, I picked a Naga last time.  Better pick the Gargoyle now.  Also, marksman sounds like they shoot stuff, and the biathlon is a cool winter olympics event.

#3 Ghoul Venom Mage!!?? I have no idea what that is, but conjuring venom is way better than being an octupus...and worshipping a god I can't even pronounce.

#4 That flippin' Tengu again!  No!  I will be a Centaur, they have hooves.

Run #1:

Solariska:

Cool name; ok, let’s get this thing started.  What was the monster again?  What was the class-thing?  Ok, cool.  Wait, some of these classes are greyed out, can I even click Venom Mage?  It appears I can.  Maybe that means this is not a recommended build.  Whatever, I’m awesome.

Ok, soooo I’m a magic user.  What spells do I get?  Oh, that’s the abilities tab; well I have immune from like all this stuff…torment, cold, negative energy, poison.  Neat.  I wonder what “thrives on rotten meat means,” eh, I’ll figure it out.

Anyway, I poison people apparently.  Not much unarmed fighting, maybe poison/run away is my whole gig?  Stealthy and all?  I can do that.

Wheee, I’m shooting spells at goblins, now rats.  Wait, I’m out of MP…run away!!!!  Somehow that succeeded, but I should probably attack back instead of running into unknown areas.  Gotta be clever, shraeye.  Hey I poisoned somebody!  Run away and let poison do the work.  Oh, the poison wears off, then they almost kill me.  Bad plan; next time, administer more poison.

Found Ashenzari, can’t worship that.  Ok, gained a level AND got better at dodging.  Not abysmal so far.  I might need a backup for when poison doesn’t work.  Slings seem to take the spot where I’d rather spell them.  Maybe a dagger?  That seems thematically good for sneaky/poison dude.  I like thematic stuff.

Getting potions and scrolls, yay!  Got double potion, but those are scary.  I’ll wait until I get more scrolls and hope to get identify.  Or I can read something as a ‘reward’ once I’ve cleared floor one.  Ok, floor one done.  Not brave enough to read, though I have two of VIGRYO WE GOXT.  I like trying to read those names.

Floor 2: Hey look, two sleeping dudes.  Maybe I can sneak-kill one.  Nope, they’re awake.  Now another is around.  Aaaaaah, I can’t get back to the stairs.  And I’m out of MP, dang.  Run away!  Stairs to level 3, yes please!  And only one came with me.  Let’s see if I survive. Success.  Now eat rotten flesh.  Gotta get me some more of that.  Uhoh, going back up is a bad idea.  Out of MP, low on health, 1 goblin to go.  Bright idea: go to floor 3…doesn’t work.  Now I’m running away blind down the halls.  0MP, 2HP.  Got enough MP!  And miscast…. More running 1MP!  And another miscast….

Oh god, 3 more monsters.  Stairs to floor 4!  Yes please!  Well, I’m basically dead, but am really making progress ;)  And I’m back alive.  Miracle.  Going back to floor 2 to do this proper.  Oh, and put more focus into stealth.  Yeah, that’s definitely what screwed me up earlier.  Reaching level 3, get Dexterity.  Hmmm, my flesh keeps rotting away.  How do I stop that?  Oh, eat more.  Got it.  Level 2 going nice, hard to get food.  Oh, theeeere are all the monsters; I’d better run away.  Unsuccessful.  Dead.

run#2

So through a bit of research (shuffled through ‘viable options’ and then looked them up to see if they were bright grey or dark grey), I learned that Ghoul Venom Mage is ‘not a viable character’.  Perfect!

Anyway, this is run #2, and this time the commentary will be more clear.  Instead of using level for character level AND dungeon depth, I’ll call the dungeon levels by names.  Dungeon 1, or D1, is the starting floor.  I like that.  So level is my character strength.  I’m aiming for level 6.  I think that would be brilliant.  I wonder what D-# that is achievable at.

Ok, D1 is weird, a lot of diagonals and stuff.  That will make it harder for me to shoot people at range?  Also, I wonder if the ‘claws’ weapon is strong enough to justify only training unarmed.  Look at me!  I’m attempting to use strategic thinking!  Well who knows what’s best.  Good players, I assume.  But for right now, I’ll do what’s the most fun.

First monster is a rat.  He’s sleeping, “sucker!”.  Miscast.  Missed shot…uh…I mean, “you’re a worthy adversary and I honor your presence and stuff”.  Used last MP and killed him.  Ok, I guess I have to honor the monsters before I can hit them.  Picked up a ring mail, but those things are heavy and annoying, definitely not wearing it.  Doing normal stuff, killing monsters like it’s my job (why is this class not viable?) and getting some loot.  Ooh! A potion!  I totally want to drink it.  I’m doing it.

What luck!  It was a potion of Heal Wounds.  AAAANNNND, right through the next door was another Potion of Heal Wounds.  Solariska is awesome!  Now I got a scroll named YNOSIO GUSAFF, and I had a good feeling about that name, so I read it.  Scroll of identify.  Then found another that I could use twice (is that random or something?).  Now I’ve identified potions of healing and cure wounds.  AND a scroll of teleportation.  Life is awesome.

Made it to level 3 without leaving D1.  I wonder if that’s common.  Anyway, I take Intelligence because my spellcaster somehow only had 10 Int to start with; that seems low.  Onward to D2!!  I kill a bunny, I get wrecked by a snake, bad snake.  Retreating to D1, and remembering why ghouls are the worst.  Where’s my regen, yo??  Ruminating on that, I log off for the time being.

Part 2

Starting D2, things have been good so far.  But lucks supposed to average out, so worries are up ahead.  Nothing crazy is happening, a large number of snakes it seems, and I have a heck of a time with them.  Two situations at or below 6HP, don’t like those.  I wonder what’s better to be quivered/thrown.  Darts or clubs; is there any place where I can see base damage and stuff?  Kobolds, no prob.  Rats, quokka (?), whatever.  But snakes?  Man, I hate them.  And I’m even poison resistant!  Also, I see an altar to Vehemut, is he the guy I can worship?  It is!! Unfortunately the altar is surrounded by lava, so I have no idea how to get there.

Well, I’m annoyed by how fragile I am.  What’s the way around that?  Anyway, D2 cleared out and now I’m on to D3, yay.  Here the monsters be! Cockroach, snake, goblin.  All waiting for me, so the excitement begins.  First two dealt with, but the snake remains and I’m running low on MP.  Will I resort to the classic tactic of “running away in cowardice”?  Not this time, the snake has slunk away.  But there are bigger problems, for Sigmund has been spotted.  And he’s spotted me, this is terrible.  Running towards a revealed staircase, I find an orc warrior/wizard duo.  Perfect, simply perfect.  Up and down, up and down.  All 3 staircases to D3 lead to essentially neighboring rooms, and Sigmund is tracking me like a crazed demon.  Will he ever stop??  He seems to be leaving me alone for now but I’m paranoid.  Meanwhile, Solariska has gone to Level 5.  Which reminds me that I should check for new spells to memorize.

No spells, and Sigmund is still AWOL.  However, I have picked up a special dagger (those purple, more likely to be awesome/terribles), cavalierly equipped it and got a dagger of speed.  Sounds good.  Crapper, he found me, fired a magic missle, then blinked.  I have no idea where he’s at, this is terrifying.  I will escape to D4.

Down here I see new monsters, never yet killed.  Ants and ball pythons, interesting.  Somehow, I have 4 scrolls of teleportation, and no scrolls of identify.  I thought the latter was supposed to be common.  A warren (?) of orcs comes upon me, four of them.  Backing towards some stairs to D5, I sling a few spells at them.  Olgreb’s Toxic Radiance sounds neat, but I still wait for the day when I successfully cast it.  However, a few well timed Stings plus some fancy dagger-work seems to be working.  Level 6! More intelligence!  Olgreb’s Toxic Radiance is awesome!  Ran into a club (?) of orcs, with wizards and priests and all that weird stuff.  They dead now.  Things are good, D4 is cleared and I’m trying on new clothes.  One of them is a +2 robe.  I’m learning about different armors, some are good for AC, some for evasion.  I like the evasion of the robe, with the +2 for nice AC.  Keeping that.  Also, none of the armor that I’ve picked up is cursed… what is it with the luck and stuff?  Got a scroll of identify, and found that I had a stack of 4 magic mappings.  Those sound neat.

Part 3

D5 achieved.  A whole slew of people are waiting, so I burst the Toxic Orb, and watch them die.  Except for this dumb snake.  He keeps hitting me.  I don’t like it.  Oh, he’s poison resistant, that’s great for a Venom Mage, jeez.  Used magic mapping, and learned that there is a secret room on D5 reachable from a staircase on D6.  Excited for that.  Anyway, I’m onto D6, nothing to it.

What is this madness??!?? The floor is burning and it’s an “excluded area”???  What the heck is that?  Also, ice bear or something, and another monster that was new.  Super exciting.  I still have no idea what a rune is, so hopefully I can beat Grujah just on levels.  Well I killed Blork the Orc, so decided to go back and slay Sigmund.  He’s a pansy.  But I still can’t figure out how to worship Vehumet, because of the lava.  I need flight or something.  Hopefully a shop has this. Or I can identify a scroll of flight.  I’ll keep delving for now.

On to D7.  Ecumenical Temple found!  I hope Vehumet is in there!  Saving again; time for drinks!

interlude
Ecumenical Temple.  No Vehumet, very boring.  Dang, swarm of wights chased me upstairs.  Hit 2 more monsters, now I’m dancing between D5,6,7 and trying to take on only one at a time.  Huge swarms of poison immune creatures, not my Venom Mage’s favorite.

Survived them, after much dancing.  Took a quick trip down and back a stairs to D8 in case that helps me beat Grujah.  Will play more tomorrow.

Part 4
Continuing on; D7 is cleared so I’m now entering D8 fully.  Character is doing fine, and I’m beginning to rely on Mephitic Cloud more.  However, it causes hunger and right now Sting is hunger-free.  Oh crap, it’s Eustachio.  I think I’ll try to take him on.  Start with Toxic Radiance, boom.  Now confuse the mean-pants. He got no summons off; killed him plus a swarm of bees using antoerh Toxic Radiance plus a few Stings.  Brilliant.  Ok, I’ve found a lake that apparently spawns infinite monsters.  Nothing too tough but when there are multiple electric eels plus land-people chasing me, HP gets dangerously low.  So I back up and come in again, but no matter how many I kill there are still scores of monsters.  And by scores I mean 3+.  That’s still a fair number.

Finally cleared that out only to run into Erolcha.  She turns me to stone and wails on me.  I finally confuse them for time and teleport out.  Safe for now!  Exploring the rest of the level; Erolcha is not to be found.  I peek quickly into D9, hoping that it’s enough to edge out Grujah.  Saving for now.

conclusion:
The conclusion:

Getting tired of playing it safe.  Just put on a cloak blind.  It was +2Dex, +4Int, huzzah!  Another is Robe of Boredom, with +Invis and rPois.  However, the rPois isn’t really useful, and I have no evoke skill, so that fails 71% of the time.  I’d rather wear my +2 robe than this +0 robe, sorry.

Quick peek into D10, then into D11.   Hey, a 5 headed hydra zombie!  That sounds terrifying!  I also spotted a +12,+16 plutonium sword that causes contam when not equipped.  I probably want that.  Equipped; now I’m a badass.  Whoa, a fake door just bit me, better bust his butt.  Done and done.

Found a Cyclops...aaaaaand I’m dead.  Dang.  That was a fun run!

So I made it down to 11.  I'm gonna do a sprint-runthrough to see if I can get lower.  But I think runes are out of the question.

run #3

Speed run.  No time to think or be careful.  Already grabbed a cursed dagger, and then cursed a ring I picked up…oh well.  Oh crap, now I’ve blind-read a teleportation spell.  Hope I survive this!  Survived.  And then I enchanted my cursed dagger twice.  I feel like I’ll keep it even if I uncurse it at this rate, geeeez.

Wore a shield, it just kills my magic.  That’s not happening again.  Jumped down a shaft on D2, came out on D4.  Is there a limit on how low a shaft can drop you? Dancing with a scorpion, and apparently alerted an entire room filled with orcs.  Tons and tons of orcs, how’d that happen?  Now I’m searching for stairs. Being chased by approximately 10 monsters, but found stairs and am only bringing one with!

There’s an entrance to the sewers on D3!  I want to find it!  I’ll use a scroll of mapping that I managed to identify (my current scroll strategy is to read everything I get as soon as I get it).  I’m in the sewers now, and killed a bunch of bats.  This is exciting.  Until a crocodile killed me, less exciting now.  And that’s the last of my runs.

So, I am on D:1. I kill a bat, a cockroach and a goblin. Inner voice in my head says that I should play more carefully than usual. Than, t 90% HP and only 1MP I do autoexplore. Find a gecko. Cast a magic missile, miss, out of mana, try fighting. Die.

So much for being careful. Maybe OpCj was a horrible choice. Ugh.

This is more interpreting the log with trying to reconstruct what actually happened than anything else.

Davikraken shares Solariska's hatred for Snakes. I hate that they are sometimes a wash and sometimes they poison you really hardly and even a heal pot cannot save you. This was one of those times, I barely survived poison with 1 hp left, almost died again on D1 for total embarrassment.

I skip Dazling Spray as that is what I used to do. I find an early Book of Calling and learn summon Imp. I used it only a little, he was a pain and got in the way of my Searing Rays which was my main method of dealing with stuff.

D:4 I run away from Siggy. No thanks. D:6 I learn the Battlesphere and pretty much spam that and Searing Ray or Magic Dart to deal with anything. D:8 I notice Joseph and scram. He is very scary, among my 100 best runs, he has most kills than any other unique. I do have to go back to D:8 a few times and it was dreadful experience whenever I had to sleep there. I think it was cause D9 had a giant herd of yaks. D9 I also find a Translocation Book, also wanted Passage but never learned it.

D:10 I find a scroll of acquirement which grants me, I think, either +2 hat of Int or a random ring, cannot recall. D:12 I find an artifact trident which was non surprisingly good except that it disabled casting. Yeah, right. I also learn Poison Arrow, which I got from the book that every Conjurer wants to find: the Book of Annihilation. Also Meph Cloud for the heck of it, as I am doing poison. At this point I got plenty of spellslots left but I am stupidly saving them even though I had like 3 amnesia scrolls in Temple. I didn't learn any necro which was bad. Kiku was completely underutilized.

D:14 I find a RING SHOP. Awesome. I can get rPois ring now which will help with Lair, and am 80gp short for 800gp ring of TP control, which is great. I was not that lucky with ring so far, but I did have rF+ and rC+, so I was fine.

Than I go to D:15. I am fighting a yak or something. I notice an enemy that I've never seen before. A Shadow Demon. In Hindesight, there was also some corrupt, abyss like terrain near him, should have known it is a vault or something. He casts something and I decide to run. Go back to D:14, take another stairs down. They take me to a space very near, and move away from the stairs, demon jumps me, I try to cast something, he conjuers demons, than centaurs, than more stuff, like slime creatures. I get ganked upon, try to run, try to blink, no use, centaurs blocking stairs, demons chasing me, read scroll of blink, no use as these blue demons have the fastest speed in game, I die.

Very unfairly, I have to say, to a Shadow Demon which is a tier-2 demon usually only found in Hells and Abyss and the likes, as I later found on wiki (my bad for not wiki-ing it right away).

Comments in bold:

Run #1:

You get more nutrition from Rotten Meat, I think.

Yeah, low MP is bane of casters early, I always focus Spellcasting to like level 4 early to make up for it

In case you don't have it figured out, only monsters right next to you follow you down/up

They do justify it.

<REDACTED>

Excluded Area is something that is static game deems dangerous, so it warns you. It usually means a statue, an oklob plant or some exploding gas or similar. You can change behavior of this (for example, I included eels).

That is a quite fine cloak, esp given your low intelligence. I mean, Solariska's not shraeye's :P

Actually, it causes contamintion when you unequip it, not while in inventory unequiped. It is a quite powerful sword, but one that is likely to screw you sometimes, as chaos brand and random miscast on enemies can backfire. Kinda High-risk high-reward thing.

Found a Cyclops...aaaaaand I’m dead.  Dang.  That was a fun run!
They are a bitch

Dunno, I fell like 4-5 floors at times

There’s an entrance to the sewers on D3!  I want to find it!  I’ll use a scroll of mapping that I managed to identify (my current scroll strategy is to read everything I get as soon as I get it).  I’m in the sewers now, and killed a bunch of bats.  This is exciting.  Until a crocodile killed me, less exciting now.  And that’s the last of my runs.
Croc that early ain't much fair :P

Chaos branded weapons can be unwielded safely.  I think what shraeye stumbled upon was a distortion-branded weapon, which can cause contamination when unequipped, or banishment, which is worse.  Using the distortion branded weapons doesn't cause contamination, and since they have a chance on hit to do massive damage they are very good weapons, especially for low strength users.  You just have to consider it a deep commitment when you put it on, you won't be taking it off for a while.

Also, I don't know whether ghouls get more nutrition from rotten meat, but what's much more important is that rotten meat cures them of rot, and they rot over time naturally.

BTW. I am thinking of videoing my runs vs Walrus, but have problems with recording DCSS properly. :s

@Shra - and also, ID scrolls have 80% one charge, and 10% for 2 or 3 charges each.

nice, did you recover those logs from the morgue file or something?  I was thinking videoing things would be neat.  But I have never done any videoing things, AND I'm crazy slow at going though this game.

Yeah, you have all character files in the morgue ( ~/.crawl/morgue for me). You want the ones with .txt extension.

Thing is that 90% of the times when I record, crawl lags in the resulting video (shows every 10th turn or so), and I cannot determine why. I will try, though.

I was hoping to hear something, anything, from walrus or Jorbles before doing more pairs.  I am still generating pairs by hand for now, and It'd be a lot of effort to do so only for them to flake out.

Oh sorry, I'm still paying attention, just haven't had anything to say recently. I've been playing more Dwarf Fortress than Stone Soup recently, but I'll fire it up for a match.

Dude, just ask!

Here it is:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20240121/DCSSFDSv1.0.jar

It works like this:

1. Pick random race
2. Pick random background (if not compatible, re-pick)
3. 1/3 of having 1, 2 or 3 gods (unless Demigod)
4. Picks gods (first always class-god for Zealots, otherwise random, re-pick non-compatible)
5. Pick weapon that is available (claws/rocks/tridents/spears/staffs all work as expected).

(names not generated, left to you :P).

If it is supposted to work differently, just PM me and I'll make changes.

Here are 10k results, so that you can check if everything is as it should be:
http://pastebin.com/w2yDtJ4L

Edit: yeah, you run it from command line with java, like so:

java -jar DCSSFDSv1.0.jar X

where X is number of pairs that you want to generate.

I didn't think the task had quite yet reached enough use to merit automation, but I guess the script is written, now.

I'm at a school pc, so I can't use the file to make the pairs for you and Walrus, but that should be a snap in three hours.

6 was worst for me, first didn't give me that much trouble.

Also, what does "no practice runs" mean? I get "no runs before you choose to check them", and also "no practice runs with a combo after it is announce you are playing it". But what can I actually play right now and not violate that rule? (not trying to cheat the system, just don't wanna do something frowned upon by accident).

@pops: How are we handling tiebreakers? (Or are we just allowing ties).

For instance let's say Grujah's highest HD unique killed was Sigmund (3), and Walrus killed Ijyb (also 3, if you can believe it), and Dowan (also 3). Is that a tie?
Deepest floor of the main dungeon is still a tiebreaker amongst those two situations

Grujah do you want to just post your picks now that we've selected? I'm impatient and I want to start meditating on the nature of my character hehe. Here's the PM I sent pops, in spoilers just in case.

If you don't...well I'm sure we'll find out soon enough anyway.

Windexela...this was actually a tough choice. Buttons seems theoretically awesome, but I suck with Nemelex. I'm better with Tengu, but I don't trust their Invocations for DK. Could go either way on this one. In fact I've already changed my mind twice, but Windexela is fine.

Mortaraid...duh

Tradewinds...doesn't sound too bad in theory. Kiting + Lightning bolts = Kitening bolts.

Vadeler...this guy seems viable enough. I like Trolls and dislike Ogres

GrimRipper...no I will not play an Ogre VM thank you

Whistles...Redwalla seems too clunky for a Kobold, although I do love the premise.

NobleBrigand...yeah

Rarity...I believe in the Healer class. And Bloopex hath failed me

Randyosh...I love monks. C'mon Xom don't be a prick

Also, are Dowan and Duvessa like incestuous lovers, or what? Maybe I just don't understand the familial closeness of elven society

I always look them up on the crawl wiki (http://crawl.chaosforge.org/). They might be viewable somewhere in game, maybe when you look at creatures descriptions? I've always just looked them up before.

@J - since when do we compare HDs of Uniques? I didn't see that.

@Walrus - this is what I've sent to pops, you fell right into my trap, as you will note in Pair 6 text.

Quote
Pair 1
Buttons: Monotheistic Kobold Artificer of Nemelex Xobeh
Windexela: Tritheistic Tengu Death Knight of Yredelemnul, Xom, and Trog, spear in talons

Tengu is fine, but Buttons looks like perfect Artificer, just what you want. Main issue is that I am inexperenced with both Xobeh and Artificer class.

Pair 2
Mortaraid: Bitheistic Gargoyle Earth Elementalist of Kikubaaquadgha and Elyvion
Crematologus: Monotheistic Ghoul Fire Elementalist of Sif Muna

Reading up on Ghouls teaches me that they ain't THAT bad casters as I though. Still, they suck at fire and while Sif is better god choice, I think Gargoyle with his Earth affinity is better here.

Pair 3
Anchors: Bitheistic Merfolk Necromancer of  Ashenzari and Nemelex Xobeh
Tradewinds: Monotheistic Centaur Air Elementalist of Ashenzari

Merfolk aren't that good with Necro, and gods are not ideal. Still, Cent has even worse god choice and while HP and speed is very valuable, not too keen on playing a Cent Mage.

Pair 4
Capugue: Tritheistic Ogre Venom Mage of Yredelemnul, Elyvion, and Ashenzari
Vadeler: Bitheistic Troll Necromancer of Makhleb and Yredelemnul

Ah, this one.
Ogre is generally better at magic and a faster learned (better XP apt) than troll, but not as hardy.
Troll actually has better Necro stat that Ogre's Poison one, but his spellcasting is horrid. Good thing is that you get to worship Makhleb. Can be played as a mostly melee guy with harder start and some necro support.

Pair 5
Krunk: Bitheistic Ogre Venom Mage of Kikubaaquadgha and Xom
GrimRipper: Bitheistic Demonspawn Assassin of Kikubaaquadgha and Yredelemnul

DS isn't the stealthiest race out there, but god choices are decent and it's quite playable.

Pair 6
Whistles: Bitheistic Deep Elf Air Elementalist of Okawaru and the Slime God
Redwalla: Monotheistic Kobold Fighter of Elyvion, short sword in hands

DEAE is a beast. God choices are aweful. Oka at least gives some decent armor, I guess but is completely useless otherwise. I'd probably go with Jiyva actually, ugh. If at least it was a High Elf so I could do a decent Hybrid.
KoFi with sword is decent, Elyvion isn't the worst thing out there, some good panic buttons. He sucks with armor, you'd have to scrap that, I think. He is also frail for straight melee, to an extent, but Elyvion helps there. Gaining piety with his seems to be a bitch too.
Hmm... This was the one I decided on last, definitely hardest one. In the end, KoFi seems a bit more clunky. But my mind says he is better and that armor thing is easier to overcome that I am making it and that god can work. Still frail. Hearth goes with DE. I grew attached to DEs and he can get the slime rune easily if it gets to there.
This would be a lot easier if Walrus just chooses Windexela in the first pair and I kick his butt (instead me cursing when I lose because of a bad choice here. :P)

Pair 7
NobleBrigand: Tritheistic Human Hunter of The Shining One, Kikubaaquadgha, and Vehemut, crossbow in hands
Slink: Bitheistic Ghoul Gladiator of Lugonu and Sif Muna, quarterstaff in hands

Hunter is fine. TSO's stabbing restriction is a pain in the butt, but depending on your start, other Gods are a good choice as well.
Ghoul it just a mess, not sure how much do you need a QStaff, Gods are completely useless.. JUST NO.

Pair 8
Drarge: Bitheistic Octopode Necromancer of Ashenzari and Okawaru
Rarity: Monotheistic Centaur Healer of Elyvion

Octo Necro is decent combo. Gods are less than ideal, again. Walrus gonna choose this, he likes Octos.
Centaur Healer seems powerful but SO BORING. Walrus went to D:8 with his last Octo run. Can this guy do better? I think YES.

Pair 9
Raskolnikov: Tritheistic Kobold Death Knight of Yredelemnul, Kikubaaquadgha, and The Shining One, hand axe in hands
Randyosh: Monotheistic Draconian Monk of Xom

Both are decent, but I have to choose the funner one.

Also, are Dowan and Duvessa like incestuous lovers, or what? Maybe I just don't understand the familial closeness of elven society

I never really interpreted it that way, I thought they were just close siblings. I'd probably be pretty upset if one of my relatives (who I do not have incestuous relations with) were murdered in front of me by some random adventurer.

@J - since when do we compare HDs of Uniques? I didn't see that.

Well runes are still the main determiner as far as I know. This is just the determiner if we don't reach any runes.

Haha, I like how we both described KoFi as "clunky". Anchors vs. Tradewinds could have been interesting too.

question.

What's the difference between a +1, +1 mace, and a +0,+2 mace?  What do those numbers mean?

First number is accuracy bonus, second is damage bonus.

Same goes for rings of slaying. Damage is usually more important.

I've got a minotaur figher who's super AC'ed up (25 right now) and I'm trying to see if the 0,2 weapon of protection is better than the 1,1 weapon of protection.  Or if a 2,4-weapon is good enough that it's worth losing the 'of protection'.  They're all the same thing, axe, or mace...can't quite remember off the top of my head.

They're all better in different situations. If something is hard to hit, the extra accuracy is better, but if something is easy to hit, the damage is better. I guess if something is both hard to hit and hard to kill the damage would probably be better because then when you hit you you'd have a better chance of killing them. Those numbers (1,1 vs 0,2) aren't really different enough that it'll make much difference though, it's a bigger deal when you're comparing something like (4,2 vs 0,7). As long as you aren't having to rest too often you're probably doing fine. I think there's some damage types that go through AC (smiting?) and if you are fighting those things the pure 2,4 weapon would be better against them since your AC isn't going to do much for you. I try to carry around a few different weapons to switch between as the situation demands it, but it's usually more determined by the brands. Usually you have time to switch while gaps get closed (or you duck around a corner).

If I'm playing a caster than "of protection" is great because I don't expect things to get to close to me very often, or the only things I plan on meleeing are weak things (rats and the like). If I'm playing a melee based character than I want a more offensive brand probably (of freezing, of draining, of fire, vorpal, of electrocution, of poison, of anti-magic) and that's going to depend on what dungeon branch I'm in. Certain areas have more characters vulnerable to certain types of damage.

I accidentally editted this instead of quoting it in a new post

Runes and rune priority are still the biggest trump, aside from the even bigger tasks of collecting the orb of Zot and showing the orb of Zot that there is a bright shiny world outside the dungeon.

+0/+1 is almost always better than +1/+0.  The game itself implies that because Enchant Weapon Scroll I's are more common and give you +1/+0, and Enchant Weapon Scroll II's are less common and give you +0/+1.

Jeez, most disapointing Orc:4 ever.

A quite hard level, a spiral structure in middle swarming with enemies (including a warlord, some sorcs and high priests). There I found 2 potion shops, 1 scroll shop (no acquirement) and 1 armor shop with no armor I can wear.

Sigh.

The crawl forums told me that great maces and morningstars are better than maces and hand axes of any brand, because of the high base damage.  Although enough +'s on a mace will bring it up to the same damage as a great mace.

I want to discuss things, but I'll stick to discussing the previous round for now, in the interest of impartiality.  For the interested, here's my comments on the round 1 picks.

Config pair 1:
->Rattala: Monotheistic Naga Beserker of Trog, spear in hand
Malisimon: Tritheistic Tengu Necromancer of Kikubaaqudgha, Xom, and Zin

This is easily Rattala, the naga.  Low speed is going to matter very little when you have trogs attack damage, solid base strength, and spit poison's great earlygame damage.  Furthermore Trog covers up naga escape issues very well, activating a wand or scroll of teleport and then beserking for the 50% health boost is a very effective escape tactic if you have the foresight to begin executing an escape early.

Config pair 2:
Copplini: Monotheistic Naga Fighter of Mahkleb, short sword in hand
->Iatodavid: Tritheistic Gargoyle Arcane Marksman of Okawaru, Sif Muna, and Vehemut, sling in hand

Short sword is the wrong weapon, and Mahkleb is the wrong god.  Poor escape is an even bigger issue when your overall head to head combat potential is low.  Iatodavid following Okawaru has little weaknesses to be concerned about.

Config pair 3:
->Solariska: Monotheistic Ghoul Venom Mage of Vehemut
Davikraken: Tritheistic Octopode Conjurer of Kikubaaqudgha, Okawaru, and Yredelemnul

I think Grujah outplayed shraeye with a weaker pick.  Characters are flexible in crawl, and often you can transition into something different from your opening.  Venom mage has enough raw power that even with low int Solariska can get to Mephitic Cloud, which is a very powerful utility spell that doesn't require high int to be effective, imo.  Stopping at Mephitic cloud and transitioning into a weapon based strategy before climbing up to the more int-dependent parts of the poison tree seems like a good gameplan to me.  And Vehemut will protect you from Mephitic Cloud miscast effects even if you spam it with a low success rate, look at that synergy right there.

Davikraken on the other hand is an endgame oriented species worshipping endgame oriented gods in an endgame oriented class.  With sample size 100, Davikraken might have more 15 rune runs, but at sample size 3 I expect Solariska to get deeper in the dungeon.

Config pair 4:
Librigraz: Tritheistic Centaur Necromancer of Elyvilon, Fedhas Madhas, and the Slime god
Elcrow:Monotheistic Tengu Gladiator of Ashenzari, falchion in hand

It's the Tengu.  Both these guys get slow or absent god support, but the Tengu has a proper species/background linkup.

Config pair 1
Opothekitch: Bitheistic Ogre Venom Mage of Vehemut and Yredelemnul
Entropyrus: Tritheistic High Elf Fire Elementalist of Mahkleb, the Shining One, and Xom
Entropyrus.  The mage that grasps algebra
Config pair 2
Gloinuss: Bitheistic Deep Dwarf Enchanter of Sif Muna and Zin
Bob:  Monotheistic Human Death Knight of Yredelemnul
Bob. Religious backgrounds get really strong earlygame boosts, a non-religious background that is superior is an exception
Config pair 3
Refliseptus: Bitheistic Vampire Ice Elementalist of Mahkleb and Ashenzari
T. M. 28: Bitheistic Gargoyle Death Knight of Yredelemnul and the Slime god
T.M. 28, religious
Config pair 4
Frostbite: Bitheistic Draconian Ice Elementalist of Vehemut and Ashenzari
Esma: Monotheistic Naga Chaos Knight of Xom
I think both players made a mistake, and Esma is stronger here.  Xom is chaotic, but there are ways to make sure things work out for you well on average.  Learning ice magic with no proficiency is a much slower start than a guaranteed upgraded weapon.  I notice now that I forgot to randomly select the starting weapon for Esma, which may have served as a reminder that religious backgrounds get strong starting weapons, and I'm sorry about that
Config pair 5
Putrefacti: Bitheistic Deep Dwarf Air Elementalist of Cheibriados and Yredelemnul
Ryzamere: Bitheistic Deep Elf Conjurer of Trog and Kikubaaqudgha

Deep Dwarfs have lots of synergy with Yredelemnul, actually, but I don't expect a Deep Dwarf air elementalist to get to the Ecumenical temple consistently. Deep Elf Conjurers with their epic magic proficiency can.

Config pair 6
Nightcrawler: Monotheistic Demonspawn Artificer of Lugonu
Ragdoll: Bitheistic Mummy Wizard of Xom and Jiyva
This pairing was what caused me to want to change the rules : even though Mummy's can't mutate and get far less benefit from Jiyva for that reason, the Mummy wizard dominated this pair by the consistent access to a waltz-in rune that Nightcrawler wouldn't be guaranteed to match.  This is too different from standard gameplay.
Config pair 7
Bloopex: Tritheistic Octopod Fire Elementalist of Trog, Ashenzari and Fedhas Madash
Digrat: Monotheistic Kobold Conjurer of Ashenzari
My digrat got further than my Bloopex.  I found Searing Ray much more reliable than anything in the fire elementalist book, and before you find 8 rings octopodes are far behind kobolds in terms of overall strength.  It's also the choice I would have made before trying.
Config pair 8
Rhyderion: Monotheistic Gargoyle Fighter of Trog
Quantanide: Bitheistic Deep Elf Venom Mage of Lugonu and Xom
Rhyderion.  Slightly overpowered species of a slightly overpowered class worshipping a slightly overpowered god, ?????, profit!

Shraeye, you can get a rough estimate of the HD of a unique in game by examining it.  It will be described as "harmless", "easy", "dangerous", or "extremely dangerous".  Those descriptors are based on comparing your current level to the monster's HD.

Shraeye: I spammed MiBe to try to figure out the relationship between your own level and the descriptor on a unique.  At level 7, Eustachio (HD4) was described "extremely dangerous", at level 8 he was downgraded to "dangerous".  It's mostly safe to assume that extremely dangerous uniques have an HD of at least your level-3.

Because the HD of a monster is closely tied to how likely it is to kill you, you're not very deprived if you don't know the exact HDs.  Knowing Eustachio has an HD of 4 tells you that you should be more motivated to kill him for the tie breaker, but it also tells you that you maybe shouldn't attempt to kill him because HD4 indicates he may very well kill you first.  The HD value is heavily used in formulas for important things like casting disables on you, resisting your disables, and even physically attacking you.

I reached XL level 13 and Eustachio was described as "easy".  So easy monsters are about 9 levels below your experience level.  And dangerous monsters are 4-8 levels below you.

I've also finished. Figrat the 1st was unlucky, Figrat the 2nd is an embarassment, Figrat the 3rd did respectably though perhaps should have a greater appreciation of the danger certain monsters present.

Walrus defeats Grujah, HD 12 to HD 6!

I'm too addicted to goko to write flavor text, and for that, I am sorry.

My thoughts on the picks as I sent them originally, and then with extra thoughts edited in.
Quote
Pair 1 (This actually seems pretty good, except for starting with a sling instead of a bow. Much better than worshipping Xom anyways.)
Aimhack: Monotheistic Centaur Arcane Marksman of Trog, Sling in hand
Don Quixote: Monotheistic Centaur Chaos Knight of Xom, short sword in hand

Pair 2 (I don't really like demigods, but I really don't want to play a high elf worshipping the slot machine.)
Marsus: Demigod Skald, Falchion in hand
Phil Jenkins: Monotheistic High Elf Assassin of Nemelex Xobeh

Pair 3 (This one seemed pretty straight forward. edit: A Venom Mage worshipping the Shining One is so bad, especially when it's from a race that's bad at casting like Centaurs.)
Molteactive: Bitheistic Gargoyle Fire Elementalist of Xom and the Slime God
EagleScout: Monotheistic Centaur Venom Mage of the Shining One

Pair 4 (This seems like an okay stealth-caster build if you can survive long enough to get books from Sif. Plus Naga's are too slow. edit: In retrospect Kerrigan doesn't seem quite as bad, but Humans are generally a safe choice as they are so flexible.)
Vanellopir: Bitheistic Human Assassin of Sif Muna and Lugonu
Kerrigan: Tritheistic Naga Assassin of Zin, Kikubaaqudgha, and the Slime God

Pair 5 (I guess I just like Kobolds. edit: I stand by this decision even though it didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped. Ogre casters IMO seem to need to get lucky starts to go far, whereas Kobolds have an easier early game, and make good Venom Mages. Hard to transition into the mid game without a good book though.)
FriendlyGiant: Tritheistic Ogre Summoner of Okawaru, Fedhas Madash, and Kikubaaqudgha
Figrat: Tritheistic Kobold Venom Mage of Ashenzari, Slime God, and Cheibrados

Pair 6 (These are both pretty awful, I hope I don't end up playing this. edit: I was worried I might have to play this, but I don't know why, Centaur Monk is worse than Minotaur Monk.)
AlliteratiTROG: Monotheistic Minotaur Monk of Trog
JohnnyZombieSeed: Monotheistic Centaur Monk of Yredelemnul

Pair 7 (This was actually a really tough choice, both are very close to good, but I don't like playing summoners, which playing with hordes of undead amounts to. So even though it would bother me to play as a Merfolk with a sword instead of a spear it seemed slightly better. edit: I kinda wish this had been the one we'd gone with so I could have played a non-Kobold.)
Ponyo: Bitheistic Merfolk Abyssal Knight of Lugonu and Zin, Falchion in hand
Murcrow: Monotheistic Tengu Death Knight of Yredelemnul, Falchion in hand

I'll try to post my morgue and as much as I remember of the run when I get time later.
