Commentary for my match with Scott Pilgrim, which he won 3-1.
Game 1:
http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20140223/log.5219b890e4b0d7c017c17bab.1393194106280.txtMy first time playing with Knights! Otherwise a pretty boring big money board. Going first with a 5-2 opener (and not getting distracted by shiny objects) push me over the edge.
Game 2:
http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20140223/log.5219b890e4b0d7c017c17bab.1393195034967.txtI thought this was another boring board, but Mr. Pilgrim proves me wrong. I get another 5-2, and go for big money supported with first turn mine. Scott Pilgrim blows me out of the water with an impressive engine comprised of seemingly weak components, including worker's village, moat, kings court, butcher, and an oasis. Before long he's gaining multiple provinces a turn.
Game 3:
http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20140223/log.5219b890e4b0d7c017c17bab.1393196826406.txtProbably our most interesting board. We go for similar engines built around hunting ground and fortress, with count, crossroads, and trade routes supporting -- and importantly for him, monuments. My engine is strong, although I'm a little light on actions after he gets 6 fortresses to my 4. I end the game with a big 21st turn, winning the province split 5-3, as well as an extra duchy, and think I've taken it. But I underestimate the power of monuments. I haven't played with this card before, and I actually misread it, thinking it is worth 1 vp and fail to realize it gives vp tokens when played (I was wondering why it wasn't green...). By the end of the game he's racked up 18 vp (!) tokens to my 1. (I picked up one monument, but because I was short actions I only played it once and eventually trash it to trade routes -- almost certainly a mistake in retrospect). I end up down two points. I suspect I could have made these up if I'd prioritized gaining and playing monuments, but I didn't appreciate its power (and perhaps this would have diluted my deck too much anyway). Great game! I'm inexperienced at engine building, and even though I didn't win this I'm pleased with how my deck came together.
Game 4:
http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20140223/log.5219b890e4b0d7c017c17bab.1393197483887.txtI go for ill-gotten gains and load him up with curses, but it isn't enough to stop his wharf-and-squire engine. Quarry and infinite buys allow him to pull ahead and end the game early on piles on turn 16.
Thanks again for the great match Scott Pilgrim! Good luck in your future rounds!
