Goons slog...?

Here's a more interesting one than the last one. Not necessarily a slog but it felt like it. At the time I felt like I got off to a slow start. Looking back at the logs it doesn't really look like that but I felt like I was behind for most of the game. I think my biggest mistake was not buying a potion earlier in the game and getting a few golems. I had a feeling they'd be important and I should've had more than a feeling (more than a feeling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSR6ZzjDZ94). I knew I had a chance when I saw my opponent buying coppers with the extra goons buys. I was hoping that would be my saving grace. The salvagers paid off later although I'm sure I could've utilized them better. What do you guys think?

You buy an early moat and that should just be a silver. Your deck is likely to get overloaded with terminals and the moat will congest things after you get stables. A curse in hand is just as good defense against mountebanks anyway you might have enough rubbish in hand to discard to the goons.

I agree with DG. In Goons slogs you need to reach $6 for more Goons, $5 for Duchy and try to get some $8s for Provinces as well. So you need as much Silvers as you can get to dilute the incoming Curses and Coppers (eventually you are going to start buying Coppers for points with Goons, but don't do it too early because it will hinder your hability to buy more Goons). Especially since you won't be getting too much Gold due to Goons competing at $6.

EDIT: Without much thinking, I would open 2*Silver (or Mountebank/nothing) and then go more or less Province > Goons > Stables > Silver, eventually switching Stables or Goons for Duchy and start buying Coppers with Goons.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks guys!

Would you skip potion altogether? I was worried about mountebank/goons collision, but my deck was probably too thick for that to be a real problem.

I think there is a fair case for a golem here. The golem can pull two +2 coin attack cards from a big deck of rubbish and the alchemists prevent 3p hands from being a bust. It's a colony game so there might be extra time for investment in golems to pay off, even if only one or two colonies are bought before the game ends on provinces.

Ok. I just played this one again following your advice (for the most part) and it took forever. I realized way too late that I should've been buying duchies. I didn't think I needed duchies because I was in control the whole game but it just kept dragging on. I discovered that the point of getting duchies wasn't the points necessarily but to end the effing game. An expand probably would've been good too. Anyway here it is, turn 26 is my high point.
