I get the dreaded 5/2 split on a familiar board... and there aren't even any 5's!  I go for defense all out -- Stewards for trashing, Lighthouse for defense.

I'm able to have a Lighthouse out every turn except his turn 4 and 7, but luckily that didn't hurt me.  I use the virtual cash from Lighthouses to get up to a GM, then snowball, eventually picking up Familiars and pumping all the curses into his deck.

4/3 should go Steward/Steward an do the same thing. With Lighthouses and Stewards, you're not going to drown in Curses if you get the Familiars late. It's more important to thin and build up to GMs first.

Also, the title is confusing. It looks like the best defense is Lighthouse and trashing...

It's true. I was going to say a better title would be "the best defense is Lighthouse". Which might be true, Lighthouse is pretty amazing at dealing with attacks.
