Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: Theme speculation

That would be pretty cool too.  or something like the guilds from 7 wonders where only a few of them are available.  And maybe instead of gaining them by being the first to achieve something, it could be "you can't buy this until you do X"

The thing is, we know Guilds has 13 Kingdom cards. Unless some of the have fewer than 10 cards, there's only 7 cards left over. I doubt we'll see a Worker stack.

My thought is the 7 extra cards are 7 different guilds.  you have to do something special to earn those cards.  Like the first person to buy a province has to take the builder's guild card, and maybe it isn't a very great one.  Or the first person to play a certain number of actions or money cards gets some action guild or banker's guild.  Not sure what the guilds will do, But I think it would be cool having different objectives to work towards.  So like engine vs. big money, you could go for the actions guild, which would be able to enable an engine on a board otherwise dominated by BM.  The banker's guild would make BM more competitive on a action heavy board.  There could be an alt vp one as well.  Now obviously they all wouldn't be useful in every game, but maybe they would make multiple paths more viable on boards more dominated by a particular deck type.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: The Future of Isotropic
« on: March 06, 2013, 12:23:15 pm »
You know, for all your complaining, how many of you have actually played on Goko, and are not just going by what you've heard?

I have played on Goko, but I haven't had much access to it.  I am going to a small college right now, and they don't have a lot of bandwidth, so in order to make the internet usable there is a proxy in the dorms blocking xbox live and such things that eat up bandwidth.  This somehow causes Goko to not work, meaning it hangs up every time I try to log in and I can't actually play on it.  So for me, Iso leaving is just a complete end to online dominion, since I can't even get on Goko...

Game Reports / Stables+Secret Chamber+GM

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20130301-210501-3c368408.html

So, here I built a nice Stables/Secret Chamber/Grand Market engine, helped by ambassador for thinning.  Now I understand how my engine worked, but I was wondering a few things:

1) How much of what I did was luck?  I recognize that the first time I  used my Amb I was able to return 2 estates.  and I also see that my opponent had his swindler/militia collide the first two times they came up.
2) What did my opponent do wrong?  I still need to work on analyzing what my opponent is doing and how it should affect how I should be playing.  If he had done something else, would my engine have been as strong?  Should he have prioritized swindler over militia?  Was there something else I should have done had I read my opponent better?  (In this game, I just kind of ignored him.  Like I said, something I need to work on).
3)  If I had gotten a 4/3 open, what should I have done?
4) Would Stables/secret chamber(vault) be nearly as strong without thinning or grand market?  Is this a legitimate combo, or was this game a special case?
Thanks!

When you playtested Dominion, you probably came across some of the crazy combos out there, but which ones came up once Dominion was released that you had not seen in playtesting?  and were there any strong ones that you were surprised people didn't recognize earlier?

What kind of tree would you like to be?
I'd like to be that tree that clones itself. You know, there's a whole forest of genetically identical trees which originated from a single seed. But well, clones aren't all that great maybe. If I could get some clones and they would be anything like me, they wouldn't listen to me anyway. I couldn't just make them to do daily chores or go to work for me. Most likely they would revolt and kill me.
What if a wild fire was to start in the Hunting Grounds you have created? Would you not all be destroyed?
Then he'd be left with a duchy or 3 estates...

I don't keep my cards ordered.  I have them all sleeved and in individual plastic baggies.  We only play with random sets, so we just grab 10 random bags out of my box.  I'm just using a large plastic bin for all the kingdom cards, and a smaller one with all the money and such ordered in it.  I know someone using the hobby lobby box, sleeved and in plastic bags and it fits everything with room for guilds.

I try to get people to play games and they tell me they're too tired, and don't want to think that hard... but I find thinking in the creative way you have to to play games fun and relaxing... Apparently my friends don't understand that...

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Cards with loop statements
« on: October 25, 2012, 11:34:25 am »
Am i reading this wrong? How does revealing a hand with no victory points but curse cards end the loop?  You can set aside the curse cards and draw more according to your wording...  And I suppose it is worse than a workshop.  unless you had amassed enough money before diving for gardens/silk roads and had a source of +buy... but that's a lot of maybes...

What if you changed it to say "set aside" instead of discard for the victory cards.  This would prevent an infinite loop.  I would also remove the curses, because I think that would be way too powerful.  it removes the pain of curses... also, I think clearner would become way overpowered in a gardens or alternate victory points game.  But I love the idea

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Stratified Random Kingdoms
« on: September 25, 2012, 12:59:17 pm »
I agree that this sounds like an interesting idea, but at the same time, even the dull random kingdoms may not be as dull as you may think.  Even when BM looks like the best strategy, there's usually something that you or the other player has missed that you can do to make it more interesting.  Even if your strategies are similar, there is still variety and you have to figure out which is slightly better.  But that's just how I see it.  Probably has to do with the fact that I and the people I play with aren't experts...

Alright, I got my copy yesterday and it came with a card that appeared to have just been thrown in (not in any of the plastic wrapping) and it seemed to imply that I would be able to get DA on goko for free when it was released.  Did anyone else get this? IS thins going to happen for future sets too?

Other Games / Re: What other games are as good as Dominion?

So i just got a $25amazon gift card (but willing to spend a little more) and was looking into Pandemic or Power Grid.  Which one has more replay value?  Because I think that is the biggest thing about Dominion, is that it never gets old.

I've noticed that Pandemic lends itself to more replays. You failed! Okay, try it again. Actually, many co-op games are that way. You failed, so now you HAVE to play again. It seems that when you win, you're less inclined to immediately play another game. But that may just be me.

I was thinking that pandemic would have less replay value because a) either we get frustrated at it and stop playing or b) we become too good at it and it becomes less of a challenge.  I've only played it about 3 times, and it was 2 player and we won all 3 times... so that's the only reason I hesitate.  Another question is How long is a game of Power Grid/Pandemic?  Because the people I play with are less inclined to play games like Agricola (my personal favorite) and Puerto Rico now that they're used to short Dominion games...

Game Reports / Re: Tough IRL Game
« on: May 08, 2012, 10:25:41 am »
I actually found that ghost ship never hurt me in this game, only one player went for them and it always helped me rather than hurt me.  I was able to put back terminal actions that I wasn't able to play so I could play them next turn.  I think my biggest downfall in this set was not buying a hoard or 2.  the guy who won bought a hoard instead of a gold, where I bought a gold first time I had 6.  This meant I didn't get that much money, and he did.

Game Reports / Tough IRL Game
« on: May 05, 2012, 03:58:29 pm »
Alright, I play with Base, Intrigue, Prosperity and Seaside IRL, and I use the included randomizer cards and here is the set we were dealt today:
Steward
Sea Hag
Cutpurse
Feast
Mountebank
Ghost Ship
Goons
Library
Hoard
King's Court
Platinum/Colony: Yes
4 Player game

I started with a cutpurse and a steward, hoping to thin my deck out, still get to 5 while hopefully cutting everyone else down from getting to 5.  the guy who won opened steward/feast which then later turned into a mountebank.  I see now that probably was the better open since people would be trashing coppers with steward, but I still think steward/cutpurse was a decent open.  Another player was trying ghost ships which actually never hurt me, they just allowed all of my non-terminals to never collide.  How would you open in this set?

Perhaps he didn't do it just so first player could win? Possibly he MAY have envisioned himself comming out on top of the situation, it only being T3 or 4 by the time he played it?
I think, that if this get you upset, you need a break from the game.

You make a great point, but most of the reason i guess i'm upset is because he does this kind of thing all the time.  So maybe I need a break from playing with someone who just rubs me the wrong way

I can see how it is a valid strategy, I just get upset when people decide to do something that could screw everyone over but one person, and that one person isn't themselves.  And my table position wasn't low, i was player 2, and the guy who opened amb/silver was player 1, so that just helped him even more.  But the other thing is: this isn't the first time this guy has done something like this... He seems to like to do "interesting" things that basically screw everyone (including himself) over to give someone else the game... it's really obnoxious...

Dominion General Discussion / Am I right to be upset?
« on: April 21, 2012, 10:31:20 pm »
So I just acquired Seaside (yay!) and we were playing it, so the first time embargo was in play, one guy decided it would be a good idea 3rd turn to embargo silvers... he had started 2/5 with wharf embargo, I had done 3/4 ambassador/sea hag and another player started amb/silver.  Normally, I would consider ambassador/sea hag a better open than amb/silver, but when the silvers are embargoed it was a much superior open (it also didn't help that my ambassador and sea hag collided on my first run through my deck on my 3rd draw, meaning they also didn't get shuffled in... anyways, the amb/silver open ended up being able to get a gold early as well and easily won the game with 34, the closest person behind him was at 9.  The person who embargoed silver said he wanted to make it interesting and force people to use bureaucrat to get silver.  Am I right to be upset that he gave the other guy the game, or do you think it's more of the fact that I had my sea hag and ambassador always collide so I could never play more than one of them?

I hate it and love it at the same time... I just never know when I should go for it and when I should build my deck to defend against it...  so I love it when it works out really well, but I hate having to make the decision of whether or not to go for it... But it definitely makes some interesting games.  So I'd say I like it more than I hate it.  KC-Posession is kind of really fun
