Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: Baker and game lenght
« on: July 08, 2013, 01:12:16 pm »
Asking if buying baker will speed the game up seems like asking for tautological answers like "buying Baker will speed the game up in situations where Baker is a good card to buy". Of course for the majority of cards "a good card to buy" is by definition one that speeds the game up. Dominion is a race. If the things you are doing don't get you to the finish line first you should be doing something else.

The same thing applies to the extra starting coin. If you are using it correctly (again, barring attacks) it should speed the game up.

That's not really what I had in mind, no.

jsh: I enjoyed Dragon Quest IX quite a bit. Do you have any recommendations about which other ones are most worth playing?

So who likes RPGs? I've been playing Final Fantasy IX for the first time lately and I'm loving it. I was surprised by the more straight high fantasy setting because most of the more recent games in the series have gone in a more sci-fi direction that I never really dug. This is great though if you like daring thieves, noble knights, and princesses in disguise.

Other Games / Re: Puzzle Strike
« on: July 02, 2013, 04:31:55 pm »
Puzzle Strike isn't exactly based on a fighting game. It's based on a puzzle game that's based on a fighting game*.

With Dominion it's not hard to explain the theme pretty succinctly. You are expanding a kingdom. With Puzzle Strike there are multiple layers of abstraction in explaining what it's even supposed to be. And when you get down to it you're pretending to play a video game.

Honestly that's the main reason I've never even given Puzzle Strike a shot. I already play a lot of video games and when I want the fun of video games I just play them for real.

Scout is even bad at his job thematically. Sure he can help you navigate your Provinces and Colonies more quickly, but he works best helping you get around your own castle, finding your Harems and Nobles and leading you through your Great Halls.

Then again at sea no one else is better at spotting uncharted Islands and hidden Tunnels full of gold.

A Swindler can make trick you into trading your experienced Journeyman for a lowly Apprentice.

General Discussion / Re: Dr. Who
« on: July 02, 2013, 04:07:37 pm »
Matt Smith is my favorite doctor but David Tenant is terrific too. I'd love to have seen David Tenant in some episodes with higher production quality so I'm very excited about the 50th anniversary special. The Ponds are my favorite companions but honestly I really like all of them. I LOVE Riversong. Her episodes tend to be my favorites, she might just be my favorite character in the whole Who universe. I'm not emotionally prepared for when her arc will inevitably end.

It "ended" when we first met her. Sort of. She did die!

I know I know I know. But surely there will be some sort of hoopla whenshe actually leaves.

Consider that we've also seen the other end of her timeline with the Doctor already (In "Let's Kill Hitler").

Yes but...surely with a character as important as River they will find some way to indicate that she's leaving the show. If she just disappears without ceremony I won't be able to handle it...

I suspect they'll do an episode where the Doctor sees her right before she's about to head for the library. He'll know what's going to happen, but won't be able to stop her. Maybe he tries but she won't let him. That seems like something River would do.

Said discussion, in case anyone reading this is interested. And here's the Cliff's notes version from a later thread:

Throne on a Band as a one-shot has a special ruling, unique to that situation, and that special ruling is why it works that way, in the technical sense. And the reason for that ruling was that the rulebook didn't address it, and I wanted it to work like people would think it would, and the other option (not doing anything the second time) was crazy counterintuitive.

And so the ruling is that Throne "locks in" on what it's playing, which again only matters for Band. If Band is Feast the first time then Throne is Feasting again the second time, it is not looking at Band to see what Band is now.

It makes sense that Procession can gain an Action costing 6$ after using it with BoM, but why does BoM return to itself when it's trashed the one time, and not the other? To make this even more clear, play Procession, choose BoM and use it as Feast. After you actually trash it, you still have to treat it as a Feast, but after resolving it the second time, you treat it as BoM again. To me, this makes no sense. Can somebody enlighten me?
Procession gaining a card is a *separate step*. At that point we have finished playing the card and want to look at it. When we look at it it costs whatever it costs now.

General Discussion / Re: Star Trek
« on: June 14, 2013, 02:34:15 pm »
Is anybody here familiar with sfdebris? It has a lot of individual episode reviews for Star Trek. They aren't that great for looking for to-watch recommendations even though they do all have 1-10 ratings at the end, but as critical commentary I think they make a pretty good companion to the series.

I think overpay and "use a coin token" could be improved if they had a 10x version next to the regular button. I had a pretty big Merchant Guild turn in one game and ended up hitting the "use a coin token" button 40 times on my next turn[/firstworldproblems].

So with Baker on the board for a 5/3 opening, using Stonemason... could let you open triple-Ambassador.

Somehow I think buying a Fishing Village instead of a third Ambassador would be a wiser decision.
Who cares about what's wise? I want to be able to play Ambassador, return two Ambassors to the supply, and make my opponent gain one. ON TURN THREE.

You are like the kid who obnoxiously insists you have to play his favorite game with him if his favorite game is Estate tennis.

Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: Obvious Predictions: Guilds Edition
« on: June 14, 2013, 01:34:18 pm »
MG will be a bad card most of the time and go unbought.

I think this might belong in the bold predictions thread.  :)

Although it's certainly possible that Merchant Guild will be underpowered in the absence of other Guilds cards. Every set should have a card like that, right? Scout, Outpost, Transmute, Contraband, Harvest, Cache, Rats. It's a tradition!

I don't see how that could really be the case. Merchant Guild might have some synergies with Guilds cards, but all it really wants you to do is play a lot of them, and every set has cards that help with that.

Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: Coins
« on: June 14, 2013, 01:22:12 pm »
I'm not sure it will be. I'm think people here use "money" more often than "coins" when referring to non-token coins already, or just use a number with a currency symbol in front (e.g. $3) if they're talking about a specific amount.

...

I just did some searching on the forum for "money", "coins", and "$" followed by each digit and it looks like "coin" is significantly more common than "money" even if you eliminate posts referring to Guilds' coin tokens. The variations on $X are all pretty sparse too, except "$2", which is about as common as "coin". € and £ also show up as currency denominators, but very infrequently.

Actually I'm not sure this is a reliable way of gauging anything. The search returns exactly 30 results for most of the "$X" searches, which makes me think there are times when it just stops at 30. Also I didn't take the trouble to eliminate non-Dominion subforums from the results so references to real-world money could be inflating any or all of these results.

So yeah I guess SirPeebles has a good point. People should try to make clear in some way when they are referring to coins vs. coin tokens.

Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: Preview #5: Herald
« on: June 14, 2013, 12:52:44 pm »
There probably is some synergy with Scout, since it will help you line up action chains and also because when it does clear green it raises the chance that you'll hit an action. That is, assuming you don't have Nobles or Great Hall. In that case I think Herald and Scout start tripping over each other.

Although I think the best stuff happens when Herald hits a terminal. Herald+Bridge = Market+Highway. Herald+Smithy = Laboratoryx3.

[Insanity Wolf: Buys Masterpiece; doesn't overpay]
Alright, start your edge casing.
Menagerie, Fairgrounds, Young Witch, Forager, Grand Market (;)), 3-pile ending, you buy it to trash with Watchtower because you fear the enemy rogue and do not want to give him a Silver, Ambassador it to a Spice Merchant "engine" because you do not want to give him Coppers and Curses are empty...

You know you can trash any treasure with Spice Merchant, right?

Space Seed, Amok Time, and Balance of Terror are all episodes I would recommend for hooking someone.

Bear in mind I still haven't seen anything past season two so there may be better stuff I'm missing.

I'm actually more excited for Guilds than I was for Dark Ages. I like Dark Ages a lot, but I think Guilds is going to get more rotation with the people I play with.
