Race is going to feel closer to Dominion, because interacting rules on cards.

Roll is going to be a better game (imo) because it cuts out tons of complexity (relatively speaking) that isn't actually adding that much at all to Race.

This is not speaking to the core character of either game, just some attributes that I think are relevant.

If theme (not thematic, mind you, just pictures) is enough to get your friends to the table for something a little more complicated, Alien Frontiers and Euphoria would be great dice games you'd also enjoy. I've successfully used theme to "trick" people into playing something heaver and then they have lots of fun - just make sure you sell it right in the pitch.

I'd rank AF > Euphoria in terms of quality, but it's close. Which I feel terrible saying because of their publishers but that's not at issue here.  ;)

Do your friends play Agricola, Le Havre, or TTA with you? If so, they'll pick up Roll for the Galaxy (I'm pretty sure you'll love Roll). But if you've encountered resistance stay away, not because Roll is more difficult, but because it's got that "this is for gamers" smell to it.

Dice version of Bang! is what Bang! always should have been, so that's a good idea.

Any other weekend in January and I could make it, even on short notice. This weekend, alas... :(

If Evolution is your sort of game, and if you like new stuff, and if you're in Chicago, and if you're free tonight, you can play a prototype of the next expansion (Climate) at Cat & Mouse Games Bucktown this evening at game night. Woo.

General Discussion / Re: STAR WARS

There's a way to do co-incidences where they don't hit you in the moment, but only later when you're thinking about it heavily or talking about it on the internet. I don't mind those kinds of co-incidences. The stuff in 7 are the kind where I facepalm in the theater because wow, I am no longer in the fun space movie, I am in my seat thinking "oh god."

I saw it a second time with my family this weekend, and I have decided my opinion is...mixed! The new characters are all A+, the Starkiller plot is a weird C, the movie as a launching point for a new story is a B+, the move as a tribute/remix/nostalgia journey is a D (because too much repeat, not enough spirit).

Overall, I enjoyed it but it's a bit empty (similar to 2009's Star Trek). However, I feel great about 8 because of 7, unlike Trek 3 (which I saw the trailer of in my second viewing of 7 and my god, the horror).

Can't decide how I feel about it.

R2DeusMachina was a huge eye roll.

Starkiller Base and the trench run was stupid. There were no stakes. If you're going to recycle do something interesting with it. God.

The pacing was the biggest problem. ACTION ACTION ACTION ACTION ACTION movie over. Good action, sure. But why did we need the tentacle monster scene on the Falcon? We didn't. Let the characters talk!

But the new characters were all amazing.

And overall it felt like Star Wars and that's not nothing. So maybe I liked it?

So, well, I got to play Dominion on my iPad for free without a problem.  That's gotta be a win, right?

MF Dominion is like Scout - fine in isolation,  but fails miserably when compared to anything else.

61
Hard to see anything but MF getting the reception they earned here, as much as I wish it weren't so.

62
The players would play Real Dominion

I for one would love to play in this magical land of no VP counter.

My brother (and possibly his girlfriend) are coming too!

65
Doesn't work for 3/4 player games. That's where the other players would go.

66
Also thanks to Voltaire for playing one league match with me really late.  I would have stayed and played more, but I didn't want to keep people up who I depended on to get a ride home.

I'll definitely see some of you in Cincinnati on 1/30/16, I really need some Dominion redemption after that lousy showing.

#teamD2

The Thief/Alms/Gardens game was my favorite board (it was my first game of the tourney). It's got great rock/paper/scissors. One opponent went Thief, myself and another went Hunting Party and then I was getting outclassed in Hunting Party and destined to get third. So I switched to Thief to play for second, and that destroyed the Hunting Party player (no money left!) and I actually probably could have won if I'd not misplayed the middle stages.

Switching strategies in a Dominion game, when does that ever work? I actually kinda like three-player after this weekend. I always liked it casually, but this showed me that three-player can thrill competitively.

Also I hate that Cultist board I played with RR. Ugh. (He's better, no doubt though. You played well)

Second-favorite board was the Fortress/Develop/Wishing Well/Forge/Artificer. I think I spent $8 on a Province once, but ended with I believe 6 in my deck.

Wait, Summon is way better than that right?

Summon was in the UCon final, was used, but wasn't key, if I am remembering correctly?

And I played an IRL league match with AHoppy where Summon was a dud.

What I am going for is this:

  • I think Summon looks bonkers on paper and is only "good" in practice
  • We need it online because I'm going insane with virtually no data on these things
  • Something about heroin

69
This combo came up during UConn. Adam used it to win.

Ah, the perils of being less famous.  ;)

70
So this was a blast - well-run, fun, exhausting, and the other thing...oh right, fun!

Came in tied for fourth, would have been one of the five players mentioned in the theoretical five-way tie for third if that had happened, so I was very pleased.

71
I mean, the fantasy castle is fine. They can't all be the best art ever (and it doesn't hurt my enjoyment of the game at all).

On a scale of how much it bugs me, the castle is 2 out of 10 (barely bugging me at all). However, the daylight version is too busy and colorful and is somewhat distracting/contributes to visual clutter.

72
So while that's an upgrade, I'd prefer not to play in deep space. Some sort of mild pattern (as opposed to garish fantasy castle) would be a nice middle-ground.

However.

A+ work.

73
If anyone has a car and is willing to pick me up from the Ann Arbor Amtrak at 1 PM (about 20 minutes from the con), I will buy you a very nice lunch or dinner.

Otherwise, I'll be arriving via taxi and spending about the cost of two nice dinners.  :)

74
I think Venture felt stronger back when it was more likely to be in a kingdom with Mint.

That's the other thing to remember about "early" strategy advice - it might be outdated now and simultaneously correct then. Expansions change lotsa stuff.

75
Incredibly likely I could be there. Huzzah!
