Dominion General Discussion / Re: Accountability
« on: February 15, 2016, 02:41:35 pm »
I will say, I do think this belongs where it was originally posted (in the League forum).

The scheduling issue also appears to be a legitimate breakdown in communication, and Stef's "primma donna" comment is uncalled for. However, nobody is perfect, and I do not see anything yet that merits a change in league organization. I do not know the way forward as the relationships involved appear to be so significantly damaged everyone assumes the other is operating in bad faith.

I don't know Adam, having read this thread, I see next to nothing that makes me question the integrity of the league moderators. If you want to convince anyone you'll have to post PMs, but I think that even if you do you are unlikely to find people agreeing with you.

Why not just go with "Dominion Online Username"?

Because it's incredibly long.

Might as well drop "iso username" at this point as well.

The multiverse really is ending. The worlds in which I love this game but never have time to play it, in which I hate this fiddly mathercise with a passion, and the world in which I buy it anyway all just collapsed into one.

As for the comic, I guess I'm the kind of person who tries to associate as much possible with people who share my interests in the first place.  Does that make me an asshole?  Possibly.

Only if you also try to demean others who are different from you!

I'll be rooting for the Panthers, out of support for my NC-based extended family.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Storage solutions with Empires
« on: February 04, 2016, 11:09:46 am »
...this is how it begins, isn't it. AHEM. Anyways...

On the bottom left are Myke Atkinson's dividers. They're printed on thick paper, with a penny sleeve over top of them for a little added protection against wear.

So one of the issues I had with my first dividers was that that design didn't extend well to vertical dividers -- I just had my randomizer card in a sleeve and used tape and regular paper to make a tab. There were other issues with that as well.

I certainly don't think tabbed dividers would work well with my system - not sure on a solution there. For tabs, it sounds like what you need is lamination.

(also, not sorry for talking about sorting Dominion in a thread about storing Dominion, an inherently related topic  :P)

...

You mean you all don't just alphabetize all of them, so you can use a randomizer to find the cards alphabetically?

I used to, when I stored everything in one box. But sorting by expansion lets me bring a nice variety that's still coherent, without lugging way too much weight to game night.

Oh dear.  You have ordered those by expansion, then name, as opposed to by expansion, then by cost, then by name.  This makes me sad.  :(

Why does it make you sad that I sort things in the way that results in the quickest set-up time?

Here's what I use - three two-rowed baseball card boxes (holds everything including Empires, but no mats [and this is 2 pictures of 1 of the boxes, and not the one with Empires, nice try]). The cards are all in FFG sleeves. On the bottom left are Myke Atkinson's dividers. They're printed on thick paper, with a penny sleeve over top of them for a little added protection against wear. It's very easy to make this setup modular and swap things around, so I can take any three or four expansions to game night in just one box. Base cards are carried in a separate small box.

On the right are my old custom dividers I made back when I had far too much time. I like that everything is larger on them, but they're too short (they were designed back when my cards were unsleeved). I'm slowing replacing them with the Atkinson dividers, which I will eventually color at the top with highlighters.

One of these days I think I'll draw the Dominion logo on top of all the boxes, and ring the box lid with the expansion symbols.

General Discussion / Re: Swiss tournament pairing script
« on: February 03, 2016, 10:13:29 am »
Remove 1 prelim game and add it to the semifinals.  Then take a few more players into the semifinal round.  I think this would work best if you could take half of the players and advance them.  So 24 players with 12 making the SFs.

Is the issue here not then that half your entrants only get to play 3 games? That's not much.

I've gotten some feedback about the last tournament I ran related to tournament format. While a lot of what goes on in RGG-sanctioned tournaments in terms of format is determined by RGG (and more is "recommended") I went and re-read the guidance I got and tried to incorporate it with the feedback I received. Here's what I'm working with.

If you don't want 3p games why don't you ask someone with power(DX) to straighten them out?

Because 3-player is better for the vast majority of in-person tournaments.

So, since Donald alluded to the various random board members that were consulted, I'll now more openly ask the question that I alluded to in my mail back to him:

Is there any chance that a plucky band of open source adventurers might have a chance to at least bid on bringing balance to the online Dominion universe?

I don't know whether or not the willingness is there, but I'm absolutely certain the talent is available among various and numerous members of the forum.

But is the business background there?

Gear-BM is still beat by TF/CH and RC/Bridge.

In English? Also, whatever cards those are (I hope they're Dominion cards), they're 2-card combos, not one card like we're talking about here.

I'll take a closer look at these dividers when I get a chance -- the last time I looked for printable dividers I didn't find any at all that were vertical, which is super-lame.

There are plenty of vertical dividers out there - I'll upload a picture of my setup tonight and include a link for what I used.

So how does this compare to when we thought doubleJack was hot stuff?

Jack defends against attacks (and sustains greening) so double jack was seen as a universal solution. Gear won't do that.

What I'm going for here is, when the simulator showed doubleJack was strong, the conventional wisdom became, always play doubleJack unless you're iso 97 and know how to incorporate other elements.

Now that's completely faded away, as far as I can tell.

I am seeing a similar community reaction here to Third Gear. So I am curious, is something different this time, or is this another scenario where we are like beginners playing Base, and a simulator comes along and says "play BM" and we foolishly think the game (Gear) is broken?

Binders with pocket pages, man.  Very compact.

And also add 8 trillion pounds of weight (which I'm sure isn't a problem for some, but weight was half the reason I stopped my case, not space).

There are storage solutions that are more expansible, but none of them will work with Fantasy Flight sleeves, and I'm not unsleeving my cards.

White baseball card boxes. Mine are all sleeved FFG just like yours. I know it's not sexy, but you could pretty up the boxes some same as a case. Then it's modular, but still extremely condensed. All sets (including Empires) fit in three of those things I brought Saturday.

I'm a fan of a low entry fee, but I wouldn't care if it went up to $10. I'm (almost certainly not) going to win anything, and neither will most players. But I completely get it's fun to chase the big prize pool, people obviously play the lottery.

I also adore 3-player tournaments. It's almost as though Dominion is still high-skill or something, the strongest players keep winning these luck-fests somehow.  ;)

Of course this is announced during the Cincy tournament! Quite excited, for a bonus reason! EDIT: looks like Donald already said it, I got to playtest this one  :) Huzzah, more Dominion.

Will play my first games of Thrones 2.0 tonight. I'm hoping my hate/hate relationship with 1.0 at least gives way to love/hate. I want to like this game so badly!

so um...

Anyone want three 2.0 cores and the first chapter pack (Taking the Black)? Would love to trade these away to a good home, will gladly lose value on a trade, I owe the world some karma.

Thanks to Making Fun, we don't really have a choice about who we play, regardless of MF making some of us arbitrarily seem rude.  :o
