Pretty amazing what you can learn by just reading the text on the card.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Adventures Cards: Gear
« on: February 24, 2016, 11:34:45 am »
I just realized the card name is gear as in stuff instead of gear as in cog

It's named "Gear" because "Supply" is a key word in Dominion. Otherwise it would likely be named "Supplies". No joke.

I must admit, I don't understand the tile. I mean, I get that it's trying to be a pun ...
Perhaps you did understand after all.

Seems to be working again.  Whoever fixed that, thanks.

My friends and I finally got around to trying Adventures this weekend.  It so happened that we ended up playing with Giant, Ranger, and Pilgrimage in sequential games.  We came up with a way to easily alert the other players as to which effect you're getting: if you get the good effect you call the card by the first name; if you get the bad effect you call the card by the second name:
Giant / Midget
Ranger / Mall Cop
Pilgrimage / ?*

* - we decided that the bad effect for Pilgrimage should be "walking down the street to the convenience store and, upon arrival, realizing you forgot your wallet", which we're sure there must be a German word for, we just don't know what it is.

So instead of saying "I play a Giant, and flip over my Journey Token, and now it's face down, so I just get $1", you can just say "I play a Midget" and everyone knows what you mean.

Has anybody else done this already?  We can't be the first people to think of this.

Also would love to hear suggestions for a word to use for the bad effect of Pilgrimage.

I just reinstalled the Dominion Online client on my work laptop, and also installed MMF.  When I launch the client, it displays the "Connecting" message, with the four diamonds highlighting in sequence, but never moves past that screen.  It never did this to me before.  I can't test it on my home computer right now, is the server down or is there something wrong on my end?

Totally not surprised to see Counterfeit leading the pack as of this writing.

But, I am surprised to see that only one person had voted for Quarry before me.  Quarry!  It can even be good without +buy; in a good engine it's just incredible.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Lowering piles
« on: November 06, 2015, 03:30:05 pm »
To make good decisions about lowering piles I think you need to be able to track decks well too.  Knowing what your deck and your opponent's deck are capable of is pretty much the most important information you can use to decide which piles to lower, and by how much, and when.  At least it seems that way to me.

Game Reports / Re: Key to victory: Transmute
« on: November 04, 2015, 05:51:47 pm »
Yeah but Mic Q is more on the right track.  Even when there are other Potion cards you want, it's usually better to just grab more of those than to stop for a Transmute.  I posted this game because it's one of the extremely rare instances of where it really makes sense to pick up Transmute specifically to get Transmute, and not as a consolation prize for having a hand with Potion but not enough money to buy a better Potion-cost card.

I don't think either me or my opponent played this game particularly well.  I just felt like posting it because Transmute is clearly what makes the difference here.  And those games are so rare!  At least it seems that way.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Playing Worse on the New Client

Maybe the intense CPU activity is causing the room you're in to get very hot, enough to impede cognitive function.  Ever consider that?

My only question about this game is: should I quit Dominion forever, or just commit suicide?

I'm not THAT sorry, as my opponent played quite poorly.  But still, wow.

Have iso levels and automatch been not working for anyone else? I can't connect to Automatch, my avatar isn't visible, etc.

Goko's on its last days...
Same for me, for about a week.

A long time ago someone floated the idea of a green polo shirt with the VP logo on the breast, no text or anything.  I kinda liked that idea.

Any suggestions for what I should have done here?  Besides just resigning immediately?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Deckbuilders on Tabletop
« on: July 23, 2015, 03:50:22 pm »
That's exactly what I'm implying.  I honestly didn't realize that some people love him because I find him to be one of the most consistently obnoxious characters to ever appear on a TV show.  The only episode featuring Q that I can stand to watch is "All Good Things..." because not even his relentlessly smarmy presence can ruin that episode.  I also hate, hate, hate omnipotence in fiction, I think it's the laziest of literary conceits.  Perhaps I'm in the minority.

I will say, upon further reflection, that Lwaxana Troi is at least as annoying.

... I barely even know who Wheaton is (aside from him being the worst character in the few TNG episodes I've watched) ...

Oh really?

Edit: and you've never seen Stand By Me?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Embassy!
« on: July 22, 2015, 12:58:25 pm »
Not to pooh-pooh the OP, but how common is an Embassy-BM mirror, really?  I agree that Embassy is an elite BM enabler, one of the best.  But given the current state of the online game, I think the presence of Embassy in the kingdom pushes you toward engine at least as often as it pushes you toward playing Embassy-BM: the on-gain effect can actually slow down an opponent that is also going for an engine, and the tremendous sifting ability can help you build an engine if trashing is limited or unavailable (at least with other good support, like a way of gaining lots of villages quickly).

I'm sure I did a lot of things wrong here but I don't even know what most of them are.  Following him on Advisors was dumb, my deck wasn't slim enough.  Should my second Amb have been Silver instead?  I don't understand what happened in this game.

Worst Dominion games I've ever played?  That'd be Goko and Making Fun.

Ba-dum-tshhh.  Thanks, I'll be here all week.  Don't forget to tip your servers.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Thoughts on Jester
« on: July 07, 2015, 01:13:24 pm »
Naturally, Jester is at its best in multiplayer games, where it's a major star.
"Major star" is an understatement.  Jester is awesome in 3P, and completely insane in 4P and beyond.

Also: Fortune Teller -> Jester is the combo that works best if you want Jester to be a junker.

That's a good point about the psychological feedback loop.  But I dunno, I guess what I was trying to say is more that, irrespective of how I'm playing, games where I have good shuffle luck and games where I have bad shuffle luck feel like they come in clusters.  I understand that that actually will happen sometimes, in fact it's inevitable.  But it's also inevitable that I'll get games with good shuffle luck interspersed with games with bad shuffle luck, it's just that it never feels like that's what's happening.

I think confirmation bias might be a reasonable explanation for that.  But I guess then my follow-up question is, why does my confirmation bias make me notice the clustered luck, and not the more evenly dispersed luck?  Why am I (why are we?) predisposed to noticing one and not the other?
