General Discussion / Re: Dominion intrudes on real life
« on: August 23, 2012, 08:01:49 pm »
I was just reading in the Canterbury Tales prologue, and for some reason this stuck out to me as Chaucer is describing the knight:

In fifteen mortal battles had he been--
Crusades against the Turk and Saracen;
And fought in tournaments, and won the prize;

Did he win a trusty steed, or possibly some followers.....surely not a princess!

Puzzles and Challenges / The Mystery Hand
« on: August 23, 2012, 07:50:36 pm »
Alright!  This is a pretty easy puzzle, but it’s also my first, so we’ll see who can guess it first.

It is your turn.  You have a hand of five cards.  Only one of them is an action, and you do not play any actions after it (sorry scout lovers).  After finishing your turn, you have gained exactly 12 victory points, and your opponent has lost 1 victory point.  No alternate victory cards, Contrabands, or DA cards are used or taken into account.

What were the five cards in your hand?

Help! / Re: Noble Brigand + Shanty Town beats Hunting Party?
« on: August 22, 2012, 10:40:37 pm »
I agree with RisingJaguar.  The idea with HP is usually to go with 3 or so silvers, one gold, one terminal silver, and as many HPs as you can get your hands on.  Unless you have to it's best not to be getting duchies, but sometimes it can mean the difference between winning and losing.

Okay, maybe I'm just new to this, but does anyone find it somewhat awesome that I can post a question on a forum thread only to have it answered by the famous board game producer Donald X!?  Way to be involved!  Thanks for your awesome awesomeness, Donald 8)
I'm there for you!

werothegreat is right, you can dodge the javascript bug by just not going in the meeting room. Log on and pick quick play and play against the computer. Your password still isn't secure but just pick a unique one. They certainly intend these bugs to be fixed this weekend (and the javascript one is trivial).

So you have to pick a new password every time you play on the beta, or is the beta password just different than your normal password?

BTW thanks for the advice! I have registered for the beta and am awaiting a reply.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Dark Ages on Iso a Possibility?
« on: August 18, 2012, 02:58:38 pm »
Is it suddenly possible we might be able to enjoy Dark Ages on Isotropic in the meantime? DXV, are you in a position to comment on this? I don't want to get my hopes up, but man, that would be great.
To some people - I'm not saying you have to agree with them, but only, look at this, turn it over in your mind - to some people, this question would seem a lot like: Sure you can see Batman: The Dark Ages Rise in theaters... but as long as it isn't available on DVD yet, can we all torrent it?

I suspect that the people who feel that way, and are in the position to make that call, are not so interested in that torrent being available.

And if this seems wrong, I think that's because the way intellectual property works is so thoroughly messed up in this day and age. But wanting a different system doesn't just fix things, and some people base their careers on that messed up system, and sometimes you aren't just one of those people, you are also doing business with more of those people.

So I take it that's a big NO...........

I've been holding off joining the beta for some time....do you guys think that it is worth it?  I am interested in trying out the new gameplay, but don't want to get involved in something if it is really dumb.

Look up World of Tanks.  It is relatively new and takes a while to download, but it's free and is really quite fun after you get past the dumb first tanks.  Includes a good number of huge maps as well as as series of light, medium, and heavy tanks, tank destroyers, and self-propelled guns.  All the tanks are from WWI and WWII and have upgrades like new guns and suspension.  It gets even more fun if you pay for a premium account, but I haven't spent a dime and am still having fun!

Even though I really like the DA cards that are coming out, I have always like Seaside the best.  So many awesome cards not to mention the durations!

Go Wharf!!!!! ;)

Ah....and don't forget rrenaud.  He has done a lot of work to keep this all going too!
I also wan't to give a special thanks to WanderingWinder since he is not recognized too often.  He has spent many hours recording and preparing so he could help out the less-talented like me ;)

Here's to the ever expanding world of Dominion!!!

Yeah I don't blame you.  I was actually thinking the same thing ;D

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

IT JUST DAWNED ON ME

SHELTERS PROTECT YOU FROM LOOTERS

i.e.

Shelter
Victory-Reaction
$2
0 VP

When another player plays a Looter card, you may reveal this from your hand.  If you do, you are unaffected by that Looter.

Lol......he currently has +9 for a false statement!  Wish I could do that....

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: Puzzle: The Four Mysterious Ruins
« on: August 10, 2012, 12:02:08 am »
Oh, and I think that the Ruined Village will give +2 actions. I have two theories for this. One, I realize that Ruins are meant to be junk cards, but I feel they aren't meant to be total dud cards. So, +2 actions can sometimes be beneficial, and NV, Hamlet, and Squire show us that at $2 +2 actions has to do something extra. And, let's face it, how often do you want a Shanty Town that never ever draws a card? But, here is my second reason that I think Village will be +2 actions, what does Pillage do? It discards a card. What does Village do. It draws a card. So, I feel that when the Looters Pillage, they are also taking the card draw from Village. Apparently, they also found some spoils along the way.

I don't buy this sorry. The +1 cards makes things a little smoother but +2 actions is the whole point to a villlage. A just +2 actions card is fully functional. I'd buy that card if it was the only village, i'd spend a reasonable amount on it in some cases.

The only guaranteed ruin as it stands is +1 buy. The only times spending an entire action on +1 buy is justified is if there are heaps of cheap cards that you want lots of (a rare situation) or if your engine is ticking away very smoothly indeed. The main problem with a +2 actions card is the opportunity cost in taking a turn to buy it. If someone just gives one to you that'd be <i>awesome</i>.

I agree. Most people think that the ruined smithy or council room or whatever will give +1 card, and you would almost never spend $2 on a card that gives just +2 cards.  Therefore I don't think it makes sense to say that ruined village will give +2 actions just because you would never spend $2 on a card that gives just +2 actions. (even though I probably would in some cases)

Just a few simple guesses.....just because ruined market is very simple:

Ruined Village: +1 Action
Ruined Council Room: +1 Card
Ruined Festival: +1 Coin (just because I can't picture a ruined Woodcutter or Chancellor:)

And the mystery one:

Ruined Gardens: -1 Victory point for every 10 cards in your deck

Haven't read everyone else's yet, but these made sense to me.

268
Not sure if anyone has suggested this yet but a ruined gardens would be awesome!
-1 point for every 10 cards in your deck.

It's like a sometimes-super curse!

One question I have is why I only see 37 of your videos.  I look all over on the YouTube channel and can't find any except the first 37.  Any suggestions?

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: One action, big change
« on: March 15, 2012, 03:30:04 pm »
I know, I know, I know!!! The card that was played was a Ghost Ship, and it was the 10th one you had played on that turn. Your opponent resigned after the 9th one. Therefore, you win after skipping your buy phase.

A stroke of genius.

But why would you resign after 9 Ghost Ship's in a turn? Only the first one does any damage...

Okay, not so genius-ish, but Mountebank or Torturer could do it.

Could it possibly have something to do with playing Golem and fully resolving it by using a Native Village or Black Market or something?
