I do like that system. One downside is that it incentivizes voter suppression even more than the current system since every vote you stop for the opposing party makes that party weaker in the legislature, but hey some parties will already suppress voters to the maximum extent they can get away with anyway, so maybe that's a wash.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion: Allies
« on: January 24, 2022, 02:37:31 pm »
I had a bizarre dream last night in which I received a copy of Dominion: Allies and was trying to figure out how to play it.  In my dream, the "Allies" were minor effects kind of like the Boons (e.g. +1 Card), but I wasn't sure what caused them to trigger.  I couldn't find anything in the rules, so I asked this guy who was there, and he said, "Oh, you get the allies when nothing else in the game is happening.  So like, when you play a Horse, and then you return it to the Horse pile, that might be a good time to use an ally."

And I was like, "So there's no hard and fast rule, it's just whenever you want?"

And he was like, "Yeah, basically.  Just whenever there isn't anything else going on."

So I was obviously appalled that the notion of deterministic rules had been completely abandoned, and I tried harder to find further explanation of how the allies worked, but then because it was a dream everything just moved on and I forgot about it.

So anyway, I really hope that when this expansion comes out, all of the cards actually have rules about how they work!

Don't worry, there are precise rules!

Weekly Design Contest / Re: Weekly Design Contest #140: Choose Three
« on: January 12, 2022, 01:18:04 pm »
Is it legal to allow the player to choose one option from the list, then choose another, then choose a third? Meaning they get to resolve each before choosing the next one?

Not to be unhelpful, but it depends on what else is in my deck and what else is in my opponent's deck. I might very well buy Gold if their deck is in a worse state than mine. I'm about to shuffle, after all.

Allies Prediction: Just as Menagerie had Snowy Village (and Sleigh), Allies will have  Present. The game will come with a 10-sided die to make that card work

could lower the component mfg cost by making it gain $0-5 and using a d6

True, but that sure is a weaker card. I'd say $1-$6 would be better.

It's basically a fixed version of Saboteur. I do think the difference with Locusts is somewhat negligible in most situations. I mean, it can still purify from Curses if the Curse pile is depleted. (that said, I'm kinda confused why the card had to to be this way and not "and gains a Curse if they can't". But Donald X has a good reason for this; you can't outsmart him when it comes to designing Dominion cards)

I don't remember exactly why Barbarian has the wording it does, but I will note that it really sucks to e.g. trash your Village and gain a Curse when there are no cheaper Actions on the board. With Barbarian, if you lose a card in the "good card" cost range, you're not getting a Curse. Though it's not foolproof. $2 cards are liabilities and sometimes you're forced to gain them through previous Barbarians.

Redistrict: Action, $2
Return this to its pile.
Trash a card from your hand; gain a card costing exactly $1 more than it, then gain a card costing exactly $2 more than it.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Dominion: New World

Fabergé Egg is not strictly better than Talisman but on average better (or at least as good). So the Card had to cost at least $4.
Or if you compare it to Workshop , it is worse as you cannot gain stuff during your turn but better in three respects (non-terminal, Coin, Law).

This is also inaccurate. In order to gain a card, you can't have a Law. For one thing, this means subsequent Fabergé Eggs are just Coppers. For another, it means you need to have enacted a Law from a previous Fabergé Egg, which 1) you may not have wanted to do, and 2) costs an Action in your Action phase.

I don’t like Inuksuk. You will rarely trash it (if there is good other trashing, you never got an Inuksuk in the first place) so the card could just as well be an Event.

This has not at all been my experience, though granted I’ve only played once or twice with this version of Inuksuk. The old version gave +2 Piety and was completely dominating. This version is great with other TfB, and even without that, you can get a few, using the Piety to remodel them into $5 cards, getting you back more Piety, etc.

Leyline • $4 • Action - Victory
If it's your first time playing a Leyline this turn, +4 Cards and return this to the Supply. Otherwise, +1 Card.
-
If any other player has the same number of Leylines as you, worth 0%. Otherwise worth 2%.

What if Crossroads rewarded card counting harder?

This is funny in that if you and the other player in a 2-player game have the same number of Leylines, then it doesn't really matter whether they're worth VP or not. They'd cancel each other out anyway. So the bottom only matters in a game with more players, or maybe with specific other card interactions.

Equine Village
$4
Action
+1 Card and +1 Action.
Choose one: return this to the Supply for +2 Cards; or +1 Action.

I would reverse the order of those two options. First time I read it, I thought you also had to return it to the Supply for +1 Action.

I do appreciate the fact that Art Museum gets leaked in Dutch first.

Except that name is a big mistranslation. It's not an art museum, or a museum of any sort.

Any news about when the previews will be online, or when the expansion will be available?

The short answer is "no", but here's the thread where everybody else is asking that: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=20910.0

+1 Action
Reveal cards from your deck until you reveal a Treasure card and an Action card. Put those cards into your hand and discard the rest. Each opponent does the same, except they choose one and put it on top and discard the rest.
$5 - Action

Seems pretty cool. And welcome to the forums!

If the first card you reveal is e.g. Crown, I assume you stop there?

That's a good point, I hadn't considered the Action - Treasure edge-case.  I suppose it would also interact poorly with Capitalism for the same reason.  Do you think it's worth changing the card so it works as intended in those cases, or should I just accept that negative interaction as an unfortunate consequence of the design?

As a rule I’d suggest just accepting it, unless you have a really elegant fix that doesn’t add much text. Those cases are going to be rare anyway.

This is the sort of time commitment for people who don't have children. It's a shame I'll likely never 100% this game.

Yeah, "nocturne" also only refers to music in English, but I have zero regrets about the name. I think it really evokes the dark fantasy theme of the set more than the runners up, like "Fairy Tales" or "Fables".

Maybe as simple as it gets, Rubble is a Treasure that makes $0. There are 30 copies in the pile, and mostly it's meant as a penalty you take, rather than a card you give others with Attacks. Why a Treasure? Miner specifically interacts with Treasures, as do many published cards (Mine, Mint, etc.). I'd have posted some other cards that care more about Rubble in their effect, but they use mechanics that are outside the scope of this contest.

There are 12 copies of Fairy in its pile.

I thought it would be interesting to explore a Way that lets you gain non-Supply cards.  I considered making it gain Will-o-Wisps or Horses, but I think a new non-Supply card will add a bit of variety.  Fairy is a cantrip that lets you dig for Actions, but if it finds one it gets returned to its pile.  Probably weaker than Horses in this respect, although they will stick around if you don't find an Action.  You could even play Fairies as Way of the Ladybird to stockpile Fairies if that floats your boat.

Man, you don't know how hard I worked to have Pixie be called "Pixie" instead of "Fairy", so that the game wouldn't have both Ferry and Fairy. I had to fight tooth and nail for that.

I have to assume LFN's comment about the shard was a bait to get you to fall into the Deepnest. One of the most memorable parts of the game for me was getting there a bit early (before crystal mines) and unprepared (nail 2 at most), and having to do a really, really long treck back to civilization (through the tram to the ancient basin, then Kingdom edge and finally eastern City of Tears before the next stag station, if you don't think to go to the distant village)

No, I wasn't attempting to trick anybody. I honestly thought that was the only way to get that shard. I didn't think it was accessible from underneath.
