I let my 9 year old daughter, my primary Dominion play partner, pick out which expansion we were going to buy first. I gave her the card lists for Intrigue and Prosperity; she chose the latter.

I don't have kids, yet this still made my day, and not just because it stands in bright relief against barsooma's ridiculous rant against Donald X in the "Official Android App' thread.  You must be a great parent, and I'll bet she is (and will continue to be) a capable, confident, inclusionary sort of human being.  (Plus, she probably can already beat me handily.)

Edit: corrected typo in first line of my text.

Just saw this and wow, thanks a ton. I really appreciate it. And yes she's a great kid, who has 3 sisters and a brother who are equally great; I take no credit it for that, I'm just glad it is so.

Game Reports / My best game yet, now tear me down. :)

I was worried about the megaturns and then realized how I could "short-circuit" his strat. Expand may be my new favorite card.

Game Reports / Duchy buy saves me, but how could I have played it better?
« on: January 27, 2012, 12:54:14 am »
I felt like I was scrambling this whole and had some fairly unlucky draws. A Duchy saves me (although an estate passed to me by Masq. wouldve been the margin of victory as well).

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201201/26/game-20120126-215036-9e9d4cec.html

So I had some nice draws near the end. Did I miss a chance to make things easier on myself?

Counting House is one that shines very rarely. The best use may be countering Mountebank.
I totally disagree.
Counting house is better than most people think. Yes, Counting house shines rarely, but when it shines, it really shines.
The best use is countering mountebank ? No... the best use is obviousy the awesome combo Inn/Chancellor/Counting house. But, Warehouse, Coppersmith and Golem are really good also.
Of course, Counting house is very situational. But here it's underrated.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Counting House as a complement to Goons in Village-free games.

I was going to ask if that was a viable strategy...is it? Because it popped into my head as an obvious complement to a goons deck.

Counterpoint to this thread:  I played this rather straightforward game against a Level 26 today.  Here's the transcript of our chat:

23:51 wangler: i've actually never seen either
23:51 wangler: but yeah
23:51 wangler has returned to the lobby.

...wat.

And yet Im struggling to get to level 10 :(

Seems like no veto is the "purest" way to play in that it forces people to just deal with the kingdom as dealt..Thoughts?

I have to echo Geronimoo and suggest Prosperity; adding Colonies and Platinum really throws a wrench in playing Big Money.

When I first bought Base I had the exact experience you did, and like you I went online (bgg I think) to find out if this money strategy was indeed unstoppable, and like you found out that Big Money was the baseline for all other decks.

The problem is Base doesn't support a lot of strategies that can blow away Smithy/treasure.  There are some, yes, but besides Gardens and the cards that enable it, it gets kind of thin.  Laboratory is a star, and Militia and Witch are important cards in this set.  Unfortunately, though, I think adding an expansion is needed to flesh out the game enough to get a large variety of robust, divergent strategies to make this game shine.

So, Prosperity.  In my opinion, adding $11 10VP Colonies and $9 Platinum, and the depth of strategy involved with Prosperity Kingdom Cards, is an awesome way to get great mileage out of Base.

I'll tell you in a couple days how well this works. I let my 9 year old daughter, my primary Dominion play partner, pick out which expansion we were going to buy first. I gave her the card lists for Intrigue and Prosperity; she chose the latter. We just received it a couple days ago but havent had the opportunity to play yet. FWIW, she is quite good and has a real knack for starting duchy buys at the correct time. ;)

Dominion Videos and Streams / Re: WanderingWinder makes a YouTube Channel

I should say that the tournament naming conventions WW has used (Opponentname Game X) seems fine, and makes it easy to watch the match in order. Maybe buggibum's naming convention should be used for non-tournament games?

Well the thing about using buggibums convention is that if I want to search all videos where say Goons was one of the primary cards used then it will find them all pretty easily. Maybe just append the tourney info to the suggested format where it applies?

I love the naming strategy that buggibum suggests, although I don't mind seeing a spoiler in the title.

The one other suggestion I would give is to spend just a little bit more time at the beginning explaining how you evaluate the board. I know that you mention the key cards for you, but another sentence or two on why you think specific cards that are normally good won't cut it on this board, or why this board allows a specific card to shine, would be awesome.

Other than that, the videos are excellent! Please keep up the good work.

A standard naming convention that everyone who posts videos adheres to would actually be a really good idea. I think the suggestion so far is pretty solid.

I love Scheme. Im sure I dont always use it optimally since I am new but it just seems to make the game flow a little easier no matter what my overall strategy is.

Very nicely done synopsis. If I may nitpick for a moment, it's "sleight-of-hand", not slight-of-hand. ;) Nice example of what, to my new player mind, would appear to be a rather non-standard Gardens game. Thanks for posting that.

Help! / Re: I dont get why I keep losing to this stuff
« on: January 20, 2012, 08:26:56 am »
Thanks for all the kind words. Immediately after I vented on the forum, I went back and looked at the game and realized how good his deck actually was and also that I wasnt accounting for how the cantrip type  cards dont really bloat your deck.

As someone pointed out, I was on the tail end of a 6 game cooler (the game I won was the last game of the night and it was actually a pretty good game so I felt a little better after) so I was really frustrated. Reminds of those bad nights from poker days. And Im not sure, I appreciate the encouragment, but Im not sure an almost 50% win rate is particularly good. ;)

I feel like Im trying to think though my buys, not bloat my deck with a bunch of stuff and then I lose to stuff like this where the guy just spams me to death with peddler and grand market. Really starting to get down on myself and this game.  :( Any advice welcome.

Strategy question: What would be the correct course of action when playing with both Witch and IGG. Say both players (correctly, most likely) grab 1 Witch. Should they get a second Witch, or just start buying IGGs? After 2 Witches, should one buy IGG?

Someone else posted a kingdom with this the other day and I still haven't entirely figured it out with the simulator. The witch initially seemed the stronger opener, but as soon as you added alternative drawing cards (nobles, smithy, council room) into the simulator the balance changed in favour of buying entirely iggs. I'm guessing this means it is kingdom dependant.

You are probably referring my game that I posted:

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120117-210519-457a0beb.html

and the previous discussion for those who are interested: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1480.0

Here are my thoughts as it pertains to this discussion (noobish as they are). I thought taking the IGG with my first 5 was the right play because of it putting the curse into the opponent's deck right then, rather than waiting for Witch to show up after the reshuffle. I did hem and haw over the initial buy for a while.

Dominion Articles / Re: Archetype in Detail: The Combo Deck

I cant speak to the absolute accuracy of the information in this article but I like the presentation and I definitely learned quite a bit and actually filled in some holes in my knowledge that I had questions about already. Nice first effort, hopefully some of the more experienced guys weigh in with any needed tweaks to the information. Keep up the good work.

Game Reports / I win but I think I completely misplayed it
« on: January 18, 2012, 12:22:15 am »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201201/17/game-20120117-210519-457a0beb.html

I won but it took 24 turns and I feel like I couldve played more efficiently. I go with the IGG over the Witch but then sort of abandoned it since I felt I was just fueling the bishops. Still with a relative dearth of +ACtion on the board, maybe that wasnt such a big deal. I try to transition to Nobles to use with smithy..I dunno, just felt really clunky. The game still isnt quite clicking for me. Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

Dominion Articles / Re: Deck Archetypes
« on: January 17, 2012, 05:07:07 pm »
I just want to say as a relatively inexperienced Dominion player this is a very helpful article, even if it needs some tweaking. I think you'd do well to keep it to the deck archetypes and maybe a brief example/explanation of each. If you try to to go any deeper it will quickly become unmanageable. Someone mentioned this being good for a wiki; I completely agree or at least as a springboard to articles on individual deck types. I've had some thoughts of my own on an article on what archetypes certain cards fall into and relative rankings in that archetype. This article definitely helped me with the outline of that. Keep up the good work, it's a great initial effort and you have plenty of very good Dominion players weighing in. Kudos to you!

Game Reports / New player pulls off nice Gardens win
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:20:45 am »
This was a fun one. As evidence of my noobness, I didnt even think at first to use a Gardens strategy but then after a little more thought, I realized it would go well with Baron. I do wish I wouldve bought more secret chambers because I think that wouldve helped me 3 pile a little quicker.

Help! / Re: Utterly lost on this board
« on: January 15, 2012, 11:32:21 am »
Yes, I agree: Young Witch is neutralized on this board and opening it after seeing your opponent showed 5/2 was a gross error.  The pile to pound on this board is primarily Duchy.

Grand Markets are nice and all, and there may be a chance that a Library/Inn combo might be set up in time to get Upgrades, Golds and Grand Markets and a nice solid run on the Province pile, but it won't matter much if the other guy is using all of his >=$5 buys gaining enough Duchies and Dukes to beat Provinces.

This isn't a great Duke board, but it isn't a great Big Money, attack or engine board, either.

Yeah I learned the limitations of Young Witch in a rather rude fashion. ;) I did catch on to the Duke/Duchy strategy, albeit much too late, so I'm glad of that at least.

The lighthouse is a particularly strong bane cards. If you have one in hand it protects you this turn and the next turn after you play it. I'd look for early lighthouses and upgrade and then make an early game decision whether to trim the deck and go for a grand market engine or expand with treasure/lighthouses and buy out duchies. There is potentially a very strong engine here with upgrade, lighthouse, inn/farming village, library, grand market, throne.

What would drive your decision to go with GM vs treasure/lighthouse?

Thanks as always everyone; this game was a good learning experience with the aid of your comments. ;)

Other than the obviously dumb (ending the game when I was behind, that will teach my not to keep better track of VPs) what could I have done to better manage my game here? How much was just luck of the draw?
