Is there any way to have a duration do something in the cleanup step but not next turn without using ways?
If not, then the question of whether this ruling is a general tweak to the duration rules or a special case for way of the squirrel is not very relevant until some future card makes that situation possible.

Herald doesn't help; you still have to play the Herald from your hand. Vassal and Courier give you +coin in addition to playing cards not in your hand, but Herald just gives you +Actiion you can't use and +Card you can't play.

Good back up plan in case the mode of tournament to "+1 Action gain Each Province and a Prize (from the Prize pile) onto your deck. If no-one else does, any player may reveal a Duchy from their hand, or discard it. If you do, +1 Card and +1$." doesn't actually get you enough points

I recently lost a game because I trashed a curse
(wasn't because of gardens)
It was because I couldn't ambassador the curse on the turn I could buy the last province, meaning that buying the last province would tie the scores and make me lose as the first player
