Dominion General Discussion / Re: Greatest Isotropic Moments of 2012
« on: December 28, 2012, 07:32:21 pm »
I call this one "I Need a Better Poker Face".

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/28/game-20121228-161424-96188fc8.html

Ambassador, Apothecary, Chapel, Embargo, Haven, Peddler, Royal Seal, Stash, Treasure Map, Wharf.

I opened Treasure Map/Chapel. My opponent opened Potion/Ambassador, and tried for Treasure Maps later.

I hit the jackpot early, got a province, then started investing in Wharves. Meanwhile, my opponent couldn't get his Treasure Maps to collide. So he gave up, and Ambassadored his two Treasure Maps over to me.

Check out what happened at my turn 15 (opponent's name censored):

Quote
   — TrojH's turn 15 —
   TrojH plays a Wharf.
... drawing 2 cards and getting +1 buy.
TrojH plays a Silver, 2 Coppers, and a Gold.
   TrojH buys a Duchy.
   TrojH buys a Haven.
(TrojH draws: 2 Treasure Maps, a Province, a Silver, and a Copper.)

— XXX's turn 16 —
XXX resigns from the game.

Emphasis mine. I got both of his Treasure Maps in my hand at the same time, but before I could cash them in, my opponent resigned.

I need a better poker face. My face is so easy to read, my opponent can read it through the internet.  ;)

Here's a house rule to reduce luck factors:

"Don't play Dominion."

Face it. Horrible luck is a part of the game.  :)

UGH, it just keeps coming, too. I opened Chapel-Silver, didn't draw the Chapel till turn 5... then I commented that I bet I'd draw Chapel-Silver-Silver-Silver-Copper next turn. And then I did.

And then after we shifted into a mad greening rush that left us with two Provinces, then he decided to pick up a Potion and go for Vineyards despite them not being worth very much... and he got more of them even though I had more Potions before he could Embargo them. And then I was drawing $7 on the non-potion turns constantly.

Unbelievable.

Uh, you're going to hate me for this, but I wonder if the real reason you lost is because you had the "bad luck" to click "Chapel" on your first turn. With no real engine available, maybe it would have been best to open Silver/Moneylender and ignore the Chapel completely.

My opponent's argument, besides University being slow, was basically that he expected me to grab some Embassies and give him free Silvers. Thus, he didn't have to worry much about giving up all that cash to grab the Mint.

Though he did say Embassy/BM was probably the best bet.

Game Reports / I lost to Mint/Moat

Q: When is Mint/Moat a strong opening?

A: When you know your opponent is a total idiot.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120617-152149-e667dc88.html

Embassy, Inn, Mint, Moat, Nomad Camp, Remake, Tactician, University, Worker's Village, Workshop. I had visions of a massive engine, with Embassies and Tacticians doing the card drawing, and plenty of spare actions to go around. I opened Potion/Workshop.

You can see how well that turned out.

When a Level 0 opponent opens Mint/Moat, he must be an idiot. When a Level 38 opponent opens Mint/Moat, YOU must be an idiot.

Maybe the cards you were putting back on the deck just happened to all be the same?  :)

I was expecting to see the King's Court-Monument-Masquerade pin. With that, someone could rack up points indefinitely (or at least, until their opponent quits in disgust).

Game Reports / Stop giving me chapels!
« on: March 31, 2012, 10:45:19 pm »
The setup: Bank, Caravan, Chapel, City, Coppersmith, Farmland, Horse Traders, Jester, Native Village, and Nobles. (My opponent had vetoed Young Witch; I had vetoed Goons.)

My opponent got a lucky 5-2 start, and opened Chapel/Jester. I opened Chapel/Silver.

After that, pretty much every turn, he Jestered a Chapel of mine, and gave me another Chapel. All of the Chapels (except the one he purchased at the start) eventually found their way into my deck.

Wait till you see how much he beat me by.  ;)

Or why it's better to take Minions and/or Governors instead of Torturers?

Firstly, I'm flattered to hear that you think of me as a "very strong opponent".

I think your rating speaks for itself.  ;)

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120312-191203-915ad30b.html

The setup: Caravan, Chapel, Great Hall, Minion, Outpost, Peddler, Saboteur, Salvager, Scrying Pool, Vault.

We both had a 4-3 start. Normally Chapel is an automatic buy for me, but I made an exception this time. I looked at those precious Minions, and I figured I didn't want to waste any time in getting them. Plus, I figured I didn't need the Chapel's trashing power so much, since I could just bypass the junk in my deck with the Minions. So I opened Salvager/Silver. My opponent started with the usual Chapel/Silver.

Our strategies were very similar thereafter: heavy on the Minions, light on the Peddlers. We stayed close throughout, but I came out on top.

But now I'm wondering if I really made the right move. It worked out, of course, but was I just lucky? My opponent did seem to have some bad luck with his draws early on. And I was playing against a very strong opponent; if he started with Chapel, then that was probably the right move to make.

What you do think? Was I right to ignore Chapel, or not?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Is resigning considered rude?
« on: March 15, 2012, 11:10:01 pm »
As a sidenote: if you are going to resign, you better be absolutely certain that you're going to lose. Dominion is full of surprises; there have been several games where I've gone from "that's it, I'm dead meat, gg" to "how on earth did I win that?". Don't give up too quickly.

164
Situation: Grab a Lookout
What you think you've done: Given yourself a chance to trash Curses
What you've actually done: Trashed Coppers

To play off of this one:

Situation: Play a Lookout late in the game
What you think you've done: Given yourself a chance to trash a Curse or a Copper
What you've actually done: Trashed a Province, since you had three of them on top of your deck.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Evaluate your best and your worst board
« on: December 25, 2011, 11:47:29 pm »
My best board*:

$5: Ill-Gotten Gains, Embassy, Trading Post
$4: Trader, Monument, Silk Road, Moneylender, Gardens
$2: Crossroads, Moat

Note: Jack of All Trades is one of my top 10 cards, but to avoid the easy DoubleJack strategy, I replaced it with my 11th best card (Gardens).

Hmm. Looks like it's time for a Gardens deck, with Trader and Ill-Gotten Gains as the support crew.

My worst board:

$6: Border Village
$5: Highway, Minion
$4: Spice Merchant, Walled Village, Feast
$3: Develop, Tunnel
$2: Duchess, Hamlet

Okay. This worries me. My worst board contains my two most popular purchases: Tunnel (100%) and Border Village (96%). Maybe I shouldn't buy them so often?

Anyway, this one seems to be obvious. Get $2, buy Hamlet. Get $3, buy Tunnel. Get $4, buy Feast, and turn it into a Minion later. Get $5, buy Minion. Get $6, buy Border Village, gain Minion.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: More Fun With (Un)popular Buys
« on: December 25, 2011, 10:54:01 pm »
I'm only counting Kingdom cards here, and I'm not counting Prizes or the Archivist.

Here's my top 10:

$7: King's Court (91.4)
$6: Border Village (96.0)
$5: Tactician (86.2)
$4: Caravan (94.1), Tournament (91.2), Bishop (86.6)
$3P: Alchemist (91.5)
$3: Tunnel (100), Fishing Village (86.8)
$2: Chapel (95.5)

So, I have purchased a Tunnel in every single game I've played where Tunnel was available. And yet, this particular setup might cause that streak to come to an end. The only card in this setup that would let me discard a Tunnel is the Tactician, and I'd rather not rely on my Tunnels and Tactician coming together. If I'm going to buy a 3-cost card, I'd much rather buy Fishing Villages.

This looks like a classic "Big Draw" setup. Time to put together a massive chain.

My bottom 10:

$5: Library (9.5), Counting House (14.1)
$4: Coppersmith (7.1), Scout (12.1), Thief (12.8), Bureaucrat (18.3)
$3: Chancellor (14.9), Wishing Well (15.7), Fortune Teller (15.8), Scheme (18.5)

Sigh. I'll open Silver/Bureaucrat (or Library/nothing, if I'm stuck with a 5-2 start), and just buy cash and VPs after that.

Oh man. How could I forget this one?

Everyone has turns where they have enough coins to buy a Province, but they refuse to buy one, because some other purchase (like a Gold) is a better choice. But how many times does that happen in a typical game? Once? Twice?

Here's a game where I refused a Province ELEVEN times.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110416-194516-f3362a87.html

The key cards here were Chapel, Treasure Map, Thief, and Nobles. My opponent caught me napping; he grabbed two Treasure Maps, and quickly Chapel-ed down to five cards. I didn't realize what trouble I was in until the four Golds appeared on top of his deck.

With my doom imminent, I grabbed a couple of Thieves. I didn't think I stood a chance, but it was my only hope.

Well, my opponent jumped to a 6-1 Province lead, but I was able to shut down his economy before he could grab the last Province. Eventually, my opponent had to grab Coppers in an attempt to get things going again. Meanwhile, I slowly gobbled up the Nobles, then the Duchies, and then an Estate before finally grabbing the last Province. I won 51-43.

I had plenty of opportunities during this game to buy the last Province. But of course, I couldn't; that would've been suicide. I had to wait until I had completed my comeback.

Thanks to King's Courted Mints, my opponent got all 12 Platinums. I got none.

I won.

And honestly, I don't think my opponent did anything wrong.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110518-201954-b8af4530.html

I've also managed to win a game where my opponent gobbled up all 10 Peddlers. Thank goodness Workshops and Vineyards were around.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110903-163449-02ad1731.html

Or how about this one, where my opponent got the King's Court + Masquerade strategy going, and whittled me down to almost nothing... but he slipped up at the end, and I managed to break the pin.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110830-192259-df8d6abf.html

(His mistake was at turn 20. His deck contained two King's Courts, a Masquerade, and a Nobles. Mine contained a King's Court, a Masquerade, two Nobles, and a Gold. He trashed a Gold he got from me, and then a Nobles... and then ANOTHER Nobles. He should've kept that last Nobles. He needed it.)
