Dominion League / Season 31 - End of Season Deadlines
« on: January 07, 2019, 10:20:03 pm »
Season 31 officially ends on Sunday, January 20. To account for the westernmost timezones, the deadline for reporting matches is Monday, January 21, at 15:00 UTC.

If you need extra time to finish, please contact your group moderator. There is a one-point penalty for finishing late two consecutive seasons, assessed to the player(s) responsible for the late finish. It is the group moderator's job to assess responsibility; if it is unclear, make sure to let them know.

The deadline for finishing matches late is one week later. All late finish matches must be reported by Monday, January 28, at 15:00 UTC.

If any matches remain unreported by the late finish deadline, the responsible player(s) will be considered to have dropped mid-season. This means that they are banned for the next two seasons, and automatically demoted when they return. If they played at least three matches to completion, those are kept for the other players' standings and their remaining matches are "simulated" (see the full rules for how), but if they did not complete that many, their results are removed.

In addition to finishing your matches, all players must fill out the returning form to tell us whether they will be back for next season. This form was sent to you in a private message; you can also find it in the pinned post in your Discord division channel. The deadline for filling out the returning form is Wednesday, January 30, at 19:00 UTC (the Season 32 signup deadline). Any players who have not told us whether they will be back by then will be assumed to be not returning.

Dominion League / Season 31 - Newsletter: The First Discord-Primary Season
« on: December 09, 2018, 04:24:50 pm »
Hello everyone,

A lot of you might be wondering how we came to the conclusion to require Discord for the League, starting this season. Here's that story.

Midway through Season 26, we greatly expanded the presence of the League in Discord by giving every division their own dedicated channel for discussing availability and setting a time to play. Since then, even with the growth of the League, over 90% of the players each season joined and participated in scheduling there.

Naturally, we wondered for a while whether we should require a Discord account. We explored this as a moderator team six months ago, when we were first opening signups for Season 29. We voted, but there wasn't a majority interested in adding that requirement at that time.

Gradually, though, the chorus of voices from the players grew. Many people told us that it was much more difficult to schedule with the one player in their division who wasn't on Discord, and they just wished that everyone could be on Discord. Having seen enough examples of those players dropping out, we as a moderator team grew more and more on board with it.

At our last beginning-of-season moderators' meeting, then, we decided to require Discord for all future seasons. Two months later, we're finally here. The cost seems fairly light: Only one player expressed that they would not be able to return because of the Discord requirement, and another requested that Discord not be a requirement but created an account and returned anyways. While we'd love it if every change had zero negative consequences, we think the good outweighs the bad in this case.

In addition to making sure everyone is reachable via Discord, the requirement allows us to migrate more of our materials over there. We have officially retired the Scheduling forum and moved all of the information posted there to Discord.

As you might be wondering, we still require a forum account in addition to a Discord account. That might change, but not for another couple of seasons at least. In the meantime, think of the forum messaging as a backup to Discord messaging -- when someone isn't responding, a simple ping through a forum PM could send them an e-mail and get them back on Discord, where the real-time communication about scheduling can take place.

Finally, we have had quite a bit of moderator turnover this season. Asking for new moderators for the first time in three seasons, we got an overwhelming amount of interest, which we're grateful for. From that interest, we're excited to have GreyEK, IrrationalE, Lemonspawn, and singletee on our team now. They've already started getting involved by onboarding the new players and updating our rules to reflect the Discord requirement.

We needed new moderators to cover the departure of Anders, who is stepping down as a moderator, and myself, as I won't be moderating any individual divisions in the coming season -- I'll just remain on in the role of Administrative/Lead Moderator. Meanwhile, the time has finally come for assemble me, Deadlock39 and drsteelhammer to step down in a more permanent fashion. We wish them all the best and thank them for the hours and days they poured into moderating the League over many seasons.

This leaves us with a fantastic team of 10 moderators: Burning Skull, Gazbag, gloures, GreyEK, IrrationalE, Lemonspawn, Seprix, singletee, tracer, and volfied. A greater number of moderators allows each of them to spend more individualized attention on each of their divisions. I'm excited to see what this next season holds for us.

Dominion League / Season 31 - Call for New Mods
« on: November 19, 2018, 10:17:30 am »
Hello everyone!

The League is run by a team of volunteer moderators, and due to the normal rhythms of life, we're going to be a couple of moderators short next season. So we're looking for more!

Fortunately, over the last few seasons, we've built league-wide systems for some of the more automatic portions of moderation like checking users in. This leaves the main responsibilities of moderators as the following:
  • Meet with fellow moderators the weekend before the season. Help set up the League's systems, assign players to divisions, and send out messages.
  • Answer any questions from players in your ~5-6 divisions.
  • In the last week of the season, track remaining matches to be played and individually reach out to those players to make sure they'll finish.
While questions can come at any time, the busiest period for a moderator tends to be between Week 6 and the start of the new season, i.e. the three weeks we're entering now for Season 30. For Season 31, that period will be January 14 to February 3.

We expect moderators to be responsive (within a day) on both Discord and forum PMs and to have played at least two full League seasons.

To apply, send the current mods a PM by clicking this link. The moderator application period has closed now. Thanks everyone!

Dominion League / Season 30 - Newsletter: Bigger than the Championship
« on: October 14, 2018, 10:46:45 pm »
Hello everyone!

I hope you enjoyed the long break from the Dominion League over the last month. As you probably already know, we took five weeks off in order to give everyone a chance to compete in the 2018 Dominion Online Championship which is now down to round of 16. Good luck to those still alive!

We're obviously friendly with the championship; half of their moderators are current League moderators as well. But I can't resist a little gentle ribbing: At this moment, the start of season 30, we have 256 players, which is 2 more than the championship was able to gather: 254. So I think we can all agree that the Dominion League is the biggest active Dominion tournament in existence. Tell your friends!

Speaking of moderators, we're happy to welcome back Burning Skull, who took Season 29 off of moderating and playing. We didn't lose anyone from last season, so we're back to the same eight moderators as in Season 28: Anders, Burning Skull, Gazbag, gloures, myself, Seprix, tracer, and volfied. assemble_me and drsteelhammer are still hanging around and hope to come back some day.

Many of you are probably wondering about the release of Renaissance which will happen some time mid-season. You are welcome to play with Renaissance if you both agree to, but the default for Season 30 is to play without it. Assuming it's released roughly on time, it will become default to play with Renaissance in Season 31.

Also, keep an eye on daylight savings. The majority of the League is switching mid-season, the Europeans first on October 29th, and then the North Americans on November 5th.

Otherwise, we're continuing pretty steadily. We're continuing the check-ins from last season; especially with the long break before the season, be sure to let us know you're still interested in playing! markus has also already generated some forecasts for the season; check those out and see if you can do better than he predicts!

Best of luck to everyone!

Dominion League / Season 30 - Late Signups
« on: October 10, 2018, 03:29:55 pm »
Season 30 will run from Monday, October 15th until Sunday, November 25th. Signups have officially closed, but if you are new to the league, you can still sign up late in this thread until Wednesday, October 17th at 19:00 UTC.

Late signups are now closed. Please go here if you would like to sign up for season 31.

To do so, please post a message with your dominion.games username, timezone* and, if you have joined the Dominion Discord, your Discord username (formatted like @___#___). Please make sure to state the exact spelling of your username (upper/lower case, special characters, and so on). You will be placed in an appropriate division according to your timezone and rating on dominion.games as seen in the client or here.

Please check the welcome thread first and read the rules to make sure you're comfortable with the format and the time it takes to play a season. If you have any questions be sure to check out the FAQ. You can also ask questions about the League at the dominionleague channel on the Dominion Discord. If you join, we highly recommend, but do not require, using Discord to communicate with your opponents.

If there is space for you this season, you will receive a personal message from a league moderator to confirm your signup. You must reply to this message within 24 hours or your signup will be removed.

If there is no space appropriate for you (given your level and timezone), we will instead invite you to sign up for next season! You should hear back either way by Sunday, October 21st.

*When specifying a timezone, please use one of these common examples or use the same format and look yours up in the complete list.

Dominion General Discussion / Ununtrashable Cards: The Complete List
« on: September 30, 2018, 12:00:30 pm »
Few things in Dominion are irreversible these days. People have even figured out ways to put split piles back in arbitrary orders!

However, one element of Dominion has always had more of a sense of finality to it: the trash. Once something is trashed, it's gone forever, right? That's at least how we explain the game to our friends -- discarding means you'll see it again, trash means you won't.

Of course, that's changed over the expansions, starting with Dark Ages. (Technically, Thief / Noble Brigand took treasures they stole out of the trash, but since they were only in the trash for a brief moment in the midst of resolving the card, we won't count that. I also won't count Fortress for the same reason.) Dark Ages introduced us to Graverobber and Rogue, which can all take cards of a specific price range ($3-$6) out of the trash. Of course, which cost reduction like Bridge and Highway, this meant that any cards costing $3-$11 (i.e. $3+ with no potions) could be retrieved from the trash.

Lurker provided the next big jump up: Now any action cards could be taken from the trash, including cheap ones (e.g. Ruins) and potion-cost ones.

And now finally, Treasurer has given us a way to get any Treasure out of the trash. Of course, this is the biggest deal for heirlooms like Magic Lamp and Haunted Mirror, which no longer are just single-use. But it's also now the first time we can take Coppers out of the trash!

This leaves us with only a small number of cards that cannot be taken out of the trash once they make it there. Here they are:

Tournaments and Events / Championship Bracket
« on: September 18, 2018, 11:04:44 am »
Hi everyone,

I've helped the championship moderators put together a few different versions of the Championship Bracket in Google Sheets. First, there's the full bracket for anyone looking at the super big picture. Second, you can see the bracket starting at a particular round -- since only Round 1 games have been played right now, the only interesting subbracket to see is starting from Round 2, but as the tournament progresses, we'll show later subbrackets. Finally, we've split the original bracket into 8 "regions" which will produce one quarterfinalist each -- these are on the tabs "Region A" through "Region H". Enjoy!

Hello everyone!

The Champion Match in the A Division of Season 29 will take place tomorrow, Sunday, September 9th, at 18:30 UTC. It will feature 12-time champion Mic Qsenoch and top player but newcomer to A RTT. Based on the very tight finish at the top of A this season, RTT must win 3.5 games to win, while Mic Qsenoch only needs a 3-3 tie. Even if someone clinches early, they will be playing out the full six games.

There will be commentary as usual on Twitch by Sicomatic and aku chi.

Dominion General Discussion / Patterns in Game Length
« on: September 03, 2018, 11:00:46 pm »
I've been recording myself while playing online Dominion for the last couple of months. I've played 462 ladder games so far in that time against 96 different opponents, not counting League matches, other tournaments, or games where I accidentally didn't press "Start Recording." There's enough information there that I thought I'd share some observations.

I'll be focusing in this post on how long the games take. This counts all games, whether one of the players resigns or not. For what it's worth, I'm generally seen as somewhat on the slow side, and I resign later than most of my opponents if I do at all, both tendencies which would likely skew these numbers to the high end.

Average: 18:24
Median: 16:54
Minimum: 2:07 (a turn 4 frustration resign)
20th Percentile: 11:07
40th Percentile: 14:56
60th Percentile: 18:49
80th Percentile: 24:54
Maximum: 53:23 (this game against Dingan)

So if I were describing how long a game takes to a friend, I'd say "15-20 minutes." If they really needed to know how long the game would last, I might give a wider range, like 10-25 minutes. Only about 10% of games lasted longer than 30 minutes, although those games tend to be the more interesting ones.

We can actually quantify that. I give a completely subjective 1-5 score to every game in terms of interestingness. It's not the most discriminating metric; almost half of all games get a 3. I only give 5 games each week a 5, and those get featured in my Interesting Games of the Week series. As expected, they're a bit longer on average:
InterestingnessCountAverage Length
12812:57
29815:47
321418:44
48320:51
53821:56

Finally, you might be wondering which cards contribute to a game being longer or shorter. I have that data too, although the sample size for each card is much smaller. That said, you might be able to guess some of the top 5 in either direction:

Dominion League / Season 29 - Newsletter: Working to Reduce Failures
« on: August 21, 2018, 02:32:27 pm »
Hello everyone!

[Note: I wrote this before the season started, but never actually posted it! I think it's still useful to see the mindset that the moderators are taking to this season, even if some of the statements are a little old.]

Season 29, the third season in this era of the big (200+ player) league, starts tomorrow. Since expanding the League by advertising directly on the client, we have spent our first two seasons mainly just keeping up. Now that we've gotten our feet under us and developed almost all of the systems we need to operate at this scale, we'd like to spend the next season focusing on minimizing the problems that arise during the League.

What problems are we talking about? Well, here's some of the feedback we've gotten the last two seasons:
Quote
A couple players in my division were not responsive to messages trying to schedule matches and would stand me up for our scheduled matches. It became too frustrating to work around people who were poor communicators and/or not respectful of others' time.
Quote
Players should be consistently in contact via discord or forum if they want to participate. Some players have been very difficult to get a hold of.
Quote
There needs to be more stringent requirements for players to keep a pace of games. It was super frustrating to have no one interested to play in the early weeks and then need to jam everything in at the end. I'd much prefer a consistent pace.
Quote
once again, there were some issues with scheduling and one group member vanished entirely :(
Quote
player dropping out was a bummer, but was handled well by anders
Quote
Two drop-outs from my division, which was a shame, but I guess that's a natural consequence of trying to attract new players by advertising the league more widely.

In all, we had to remove 37 players, nearly as many as the 41 we removed last season. It is indeed a natural consequence of reaching a larger audience, but it's still something we can improve on. While most of these pains were felt in the E and F divisions featuring many new players, we even had desertions and complaints about scheduling as high as C. Now, to be clear, most of the feedback we've gotten has been positive, and we have a similar percentage of players returning for season 29: 75%. But I bring this feedback up because we recognize two serious problems here that we'd like to spend next season focusing on: reducing the number of players who vanish, and keeping everyone in consistent communication.

Pursuant to the first goal, we're introducing a new check-in form at the beginning of the season. It's been sent to all league players via the usual sources: the private message you received, and pinned in your Discord channel. Everyone must fill out the check-in form in the first week of the season or risk being replaced by a player on the waiting list. I will continue to nag everyone who has not filled it out about every other day until you do.

Included on that check-in form is a series of commitments you're making by signing up to play this season in the League, that we expect all players to take seriously. Most of these are centered around communication. It's completely fine, for instance, to have a week or two during the season where you are unable to play, as long as you communicate this with your moderator and schedule your matches with opponents at other times. We're also trying to be more clear about the need to actually schedule your matches; spontaneity is nice when it works, but the default method is to contact your opponent, offer a few potential times that work for you, and then communicate back and forth until you settle on a time that works for both.

On a final note, I'd like to thank Burning Skull for his many seasons of moderating for the League. He will be taking a (hopefully short) break starting this season, but he'll remain in the loop as an adviser of sorts, along with assemble_me and drsteelhammer, both of whom hope to return soon but cannot do so just yet. And of course, I'd like to thank the other moderators who are continuing this season: Anders, Gazbag, gloures, Seprix, tracer, and volfied. I consistently hear good things about each of you as moderators, like that comment about Anders above. :)

As the season draws to a close, the Champion Match in the A division will be taking place on Sunday, July 15th at 18:00 UTC. It will feature Mic Qsenoch and markus for the third straight season.

Due to Mic's fantastic season (including two 6-0's), markus needs a clean 6-0 sweep to be crowned champion. If Mic Qsenoch wins or ties any games, he will win his third straight championship. Either way, they will be playing all six games, so we'll all get the fun of watching six games of high-quality Dominion.

There will be commentary as usual on Twitch by Sicomatic and another top player.

Dominion League / Season 28 - Newsletter: Another Big One
« on: June 03, 2018, 08:08:48 pm »
Hello everyone!

We're excited to kick off Season 28, the second season of the League at this new scale. We have placed 252 players into 42 divisions, slightly fewer than the 45 divisions we had last year. You can still sign up for our waiting list until Wednesday in case spaces open up in the first week.

We unfortunately are losing four of the awesome moderators who made last season a success. We'd like to thank LaLight and IrrationalE (2.71828.....) for their service to the league, as they will be stepping away for the foreseeable future. assemble_me and drsteelhammer are taking a shorter break of a season or two; they will continue to stay on as advisors and hope to return to moderating in the near future.

To take their place, we successfully recruited four new moderators for the new season. Welcome to Anders, Seprix, tracer, and volfied! They are all active players in the League and the online Dominion community and we're lucky to have their help.

With a new season also comes the opportunity to make various changes to upgrade the league systems. Here's a list of what's new, some of which you might have already noticed:
  • Report your partial results like normal now. Instead of keeping them in a separate forum post, we're asking everyone to report their partial results this season using the same form they use to report full results. (If you're playing in the League this season, this form should have been PM'd to you.) After submitting, the form will provide a link which you can use to edit your results later, or, if you lose that link, you can also just make a new post. (Don't do this for every game of a match, though, unless you really do play them one at a time across six different days...)
  • A Comprehensive FAQ. Thanks to all of his tireless work welcoming new players to the League, gloures has gotten a lot of questions from you all. He's compiled them together in a forum post that you should all be sure to check out.
  • The new Dominion League Hotline. In going through the feedback from all of you, we realized that many of those with negative experiences didn't raise it with a moderator. We'd like to lower that barrier to entry by providing an easy tool for you to contact the moderator team: http://tinyurl.com/dominion-league-hotline. Just fill out that form any time you have any issues, whether your opponent stood you up for a match or you just forgot some link, and a moderator will get back to you as soon as possible.
  • Further and better timezone-based divisions. The return of timezone-based divisions in D, E and F was largely a success. This season, we are further subdividing North American timezones in E and F into Eastern/Central and Mountain/Pacific timezone-based divisions. We also no longer need a mixed division in D, with 5 North American and 3 European divisions.
  • More helpful metrics in the standings. You might notice a new column in the standings, +/-, which is simply your number of wins minus your number of losses. It's perhaps a better intermediate metric of how well you've been doing than the average score in a match, since that can be excessively high or low if you have fewer games played. We've also replaced average score with winning %, a more intuitive metric for those not used to 6-game matches.
  • A new Matches tab in the Standings. Back by a combination of popular demand and usefulness to the moderating team, this tab provides another snapshot at the progress of each division, a la the old Standings posts from Season 25 and before.
  • Individual Standings links. Some of you just wanted to see what's going on in your division without opening the whole Standings page (and it's gotten quite long by now!), so links to the standings posts for just your divisions have been distributed in the opening PMs to everyone. They're also in the opening Discord post in your division-specific channel.
Finally, I'd like to recognize markus's work which started at the beginning of last season to provide forecasts for the League. He'll be doing the same for this season; keep an eye on the Standings page for his post there soon.

Keep making the League awesome,

SamE

Dominion League / Season 28 - Late Signups
« on: May 30, 2018, 03:00:18 pm »
Season 28 will run from Monday, June 4th until Sunday, July 15th. Signups have officially closed, but if you are new to the league, you can still sign up late in this thread until Wednesday, June 6th at 19:00 UTC.

Late signups are now closed. Please go here if you would like to sign up for season 29.

You should hear back either way by Sunday, June 10th.

*When specifying a timezone, please use one of these common examples or use the same format and look yours up in the complete list.

The Season 27 Champion Match, featuring a rematch of last season's between markus and Mic Qsenoch, will take place tomorrow, Friday, May 25th, at 16:00 UTC. The match will be streamed on Twitch with commentary from jonts and E.Honda. You are also welcome to watch and comment in the client.

The match consists of six games, which by tradition will be played all the way out regardless of the outcome. Both competitors did extremely well in the regular season, winning at least 21 of 30 games against their (very strong) opponents. markus enters the championship with a 0.5-point lead on Mic Qsenoch, so he just needs to win 3 games, while Mic Qsenoch needs to win 3.5.

My apologies for the late forum announcement; hopefully you saw the announcement in-client a few days ago!
