Weekly Design Contest / Re: Weekly Design Contest Discussion
« on: November 13, 2022, 02:41:50 pm »
Pulling this conversation out of the currently running WDC as it's a general issue.
Maybe we should have another rule: when the judge cannot post the result within 7 days after submission closing, [...]
It would indeed be good to have such ruling in place for future contests, and have that incorporated into the 'what do I do when I win' topic. Ideally there would be a secondary way to (temporarily) judge the contest (e.g. by a mod or community votes).
For the currently contest, it seems fair to allow at least 24 (or 48) hours for the host to post an update with a clear timetable for when things are going to be judged, and maybe even announcing the winner before posting full results so the next WDC can start. In the end, it's up to the mods to decide what happens next when the rules don't provide enough guidance.

I think when a judge has followed a contest closely (providing feedback for questions about the prompt, giving a 24 hr notice, announcing close-of-contest), a full week in 'emergency judging time' is fine, especially if they can check in either here or on discord and let us know that life has gotten in the way of the fan card contest for a game, played on a bbs forum; this is why we have the Fan Mechanic Contest and the holiday contests and what have you, so we can still get creative and competitive even when there's no current WDC.

If a judge is kind of absentee — just posts the prompt and leaves, hasn't logged in since — i can see the case for a mod stepping in and finishing the contest, but i think taking away someone's judging privileges because their job, which pays their bills, is demanding their time is worse in the long run for the contest.

Obviously there's plenty of middle ground here, but the overall vibe should be "take your time, check in, tag someone else in to cover for you if you need to; there's no shame in having to bail, but please be communicative about it".

it's absurd how much better Andor is than the rest of the Star Wars we've gotten this year. It's like Michael Mann made a Star War.

My favorite card is possession :(

Have you considered doing something like Visit/Relative?

Clothier
Action ($5)

Gain a Gold or 2 cards costing up to $4.
---
You can't buy this if you have any Golds in play.

Weaver, but bigger. However if you gain Golds it will be harder to acquire more of them, and as they can also gain you engine pieces it's something to be mindful of.

combined $4 or $4 each?

segura, take a seat. you're being overly antagonistic here, especially for a person who doesn't put their own entry in to face criticism from others.

You're offering solely bad faith reads on other peoples comments, while pretending your own comments are entirely vitriol free. Please consider your tone and other player's experience designing cards in your criticism.

As far as anyone can post whatever they want here, uh, haven't you been banned before? For being an overly "sharp" critic during a contest we're all doing for fun? Tone it down. This is supposed to be for fun; please try to keep it fun.

if you have no cards in play, you may discard an Action or Curse card to gain a Gold.

replaces Quest. more Baths-like flavor on this one.

You may discard a card from your hand to gain a copy of it. If you gained a Province or Colony this way, trash this.

this occupies a very similar space to Wheelwright but i think is distinct enough. I know, Gubump, it doesn't need 'from your hand'. I put that in there specifically to antagonize you.

9
you can omit my entry from judgment, its got some clear issues but also i'm not going to make time to fix it

Smithing Academy • $5 • Action - Duration - Activation
When you play this, +5 Cards. This card stays in play until activated.

Activation costs an Action per Smithing Academy you have in play. When you trigger this, discard it.

Each other player may discard a Silver from their hand, revealed; if they do not, they gain a Copper to their hand.

At the start of your next turn, you may trash a Treasure from your hand to gain a Gold.

This doesn't need the "revealed," that's only necessary when multiple cards can be discarded at once. Discarding a single card is public information, otherwise e.g. Cutpurse would need to say "revealed."

i figured there'd be griping if i included it or if i didn't, so, its there. it doesn't hurt anything, its fine.

ancient treasure is pretty nifty. kinda throws seasonal balance into disarray. fun stuff.

I started with 'what if rumplestiltzkin was a card' and went from there. I guess he's technically an imp, but that's already a card. and the effects are in the wrong order for rumplestiltzkin. oh well.
One draft of this had opponent silver-flooding as the attack, but then a reverse coppersmith effect for silvers as the duration attack. I figured that was too annoying, especially in multiples.

« on: July 31, 2022, 06:18:58 pm »

This one is for Seaside. Lets you set up your next hand. Stacking them lets you silver flood your next hand.

With the order of this as it stands, you gain the silver after you've top-decked. Might be intentional, but you could consider gaining the silver to hand first?

that is the point. you can topdeck the silver if you have several, as night cards are nonterminal.

I would consider making the topdecking optional. It is a nice mixture of effects and while topdecking an unused Action is good as a Scheme-like effect, it could really hurt you if you have to topdeck junk. Sure, nobody forces you to play the Longshoreman but I don’t think that the card would become too strong with optional topdecking.

yeah i don't think it'd be too strong either but the thing i wanted to do - "hold a card for next turn, draw one fewer", inspired by the deckbuilder i'm working on - would probably vanish into a broader utility card if I did that. better to keep it focused.

For Guilds:

Tomb Raider

+2 Coffers

$3 Night

Should say Night on bottom of card.
A simple but useful, easy to understand card.
Smells like a $5.
agree. compare/contrast with Butcher or Villain and remember that Night cards are nonterminal.

EDIT: made a clarity note on the trashing to specify "from your hand"; i'm not going to update the images since that would require firing up photoshop again and who has the time, but please use your imagination to fill in the gaps there.

For Nocturne, naturally. These help exacerbate the good swingyness, when random good things happen to you (boons), and mitigate the bad swingyness (especially painful hexes), or cause more swingyness (such as opening $6* + night mayor enabling a t2 $7 hand when something like Cursed Gold is in the kingdom, from getting Cursed Gold in both opening hands).

As far as interactions, I wanted these to interact with (1) hexes either earned (cursed village) or attacked with (sulk/vampire/werewolf/etc); (2) boons as they spawned - intentionally no interaction with druid, but with lost in the woods, bard, etc; and (3) the edge case of wanting to put your deck in the discard but not wanting to buy a card to do it.

As far as naming, I started with Night Mayor and Ombudsman, two actual titles, and decided on "Citizens" for the type name. Then I remembered this meme and couldn't get the name "bodygardener" out of my head, so that's what the 3rd one is. 50/50 estate and bodyguard.

i mean we still need to do menagerie too, at minimum, but also i think we should do a redux of the seaside / prosperity / hinterlands contests for their 2e.

New Year's Service
$2 Action - Reaction - Holiday
+3 Cards
Discard 3 cards.
You may rotate the Holidays.
If the next card you play is a Spring Dance, +1 Action.
When you trash this during your turn, you may play it.

Spring Dance
$3 Action - Victory - Liason - Holiday
+1 Action
+2 Favors
You may play a Summer Fair from your hand.
Worth 1VP per 3 Favors you have (rounded down).

Summer Fair
$4 Treasure - Holiday
+1 Buy
This turn, cards you have copies of in play cost $2 less.
Play up to 2 Treasures from your hand.  If at least one is a Harvest Festival, +$1.

Harvest Festival
$5 Treasure - Duration - Holiday
Choose one: Trash a card you have in play or in your hand for +$3 and if it's your Buy phase return to your Action phase; or at the start of your next turn, +3 Cards.

Trashing cards you have in play will lead to tracking issues, if you trash a Harvest Festival or any other durations you have in play.

Edit: Spelling

I get that given the number of expansions we've got it'd be unlikely, but does it bug anyone else that to get the village effect on New Year's Service you need another village to set it up?

Scrimp • $3 • Action - Duration
You may trash a Treasure from your hand and place tokens on this equal to its cost in $.

At the start of your next turn, +1 Card per token here, then discard down to 5 cards in hand.

Sort of a mix of Guide and Warehouse, and a defense against handsize attacks.

FAQ: if you trash a copper, you clean it up during the same turn.

Expansion - Event - Cost: 3

Move your Combine token to an action supply pile (when you play a card form that pile you may Combine it with a copy of it in your hand.

Please tell me if this is over priced.

Feedback is appreciated.

my gut says underpriced - consider this with smithy. you open this / smithy on a $3/4. t3 you draw $4 + estate, buy smithy #2. t4 you have $3, smithy #1 is the eleventh card, buy silver. t5, you get both smithies. you now have thinned a card without trashing and the combined smithy draws six.

like this at $5 or $6 would seem reasonable. or like, 8 debt, maybe, if mutual access is a concern

OR
Consider this with Experiment. There's no "Experiment Experiment" Supply pile, and the instructions say to return it to the supply. Opening with a non-one-shot +4 cards +2 actions is absurd, and gettable on turn three.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: 2022 Additional Errata
« on: July 02, 2022, 09:00:31 am »
Have Renaissance and Guilds been reprinted yet with the Merchant Guild, Patron and Coffers errata from earlier this year? I'm wondering if there's a printed version of these two sets with only those changes and without the newly changed Exploration, Innovation and overpay.
No, the first thing to get reprinted with the recent errata (not counting the 2E's) is Adventures. I don't know if it actually has been printed or not, but the files went to the printer months ago. Those other sets, the files have not gone to the printer.

this ties into a question that didn't get answered in the thread dz posted that linked to the shuffle.it forum's version of the errata, but on overpay cards, are they losing the little plus next to the cost?

If only I could move the +Buy from Margrave onto Cache (and from Wharf onto Merchant Ship). But I can't.

Sorry if you've said this elsewhere, but why can't you do things like this? I was a little surprised not to see the Wharf/Merchant Ship change.
Well it's a line I've drawn myself; I'm not just making changes that meaningfully functionally change the cards. I'm fixing rules bugs and confusion; this can entail a meaningful change but the change is all about the fix. It's confusing to have two versions of a card; I've lived with that to reduce other confusion. I'm not doing it for card-balancing reasons.

Maybe make a small set of these as a promo.  Maybe called them Socialist Margrave or Socialist Wharf (since socialists don't believe in buying) and like Merchant ship market. As a promo people could either play the better version while not being confusing to the common player.

RSP needs to stay in the RSP forum. especially if you're gonna grossly misrepresent the Politics you're talking about.
