Solo Challenges / Buy a Province on turn 1
« on: May 13, 2016, 11:56:02 am »
I posted this in the easy puzzles thread, but it seems to have been passed over for more interesting puzzles.

Half the reason I'm posting it is I'm wondering if it was possible before Empires (there's a clue/hard mode I guess  :P). I skimmed some of the other thread titles and didn't see this one posted yet, but I don't spend enough time in the Puzzles subforum to be sure.

No idea if someone has brought this one up before, but I'm also wondering if it was possible pre-Empires: buy a Province on turn 1 in solo.

Also, while Market Square doesn't trigger with Gladiator's Supply trashing, Tomb does.

For the purposes of Tomb: who's doing the trashing when you play, say, Thief?

The player who owns the card being trashed. "they trash one of them that you choose".

e: changed my quote to actually be from Thief's text.

I know most types don't intrinsically mean anything (most aren't even used in an "average" game). Action and Treasure do, so it got me thinking more about Victory specifically because it's the other most common type, and it's used in every game. If it weren't for Overgrown Estate, it would seem like Victory at least means "this might be worth points for you."

You're playing an action, that should require an action point to do so. At the same time, you're playing a Treasure, why do you have to spend an action point?

What? You don't have to spend an Action to play Crown in your Buy phase.

I know; I'm just saying it seems awkward and confusing. You can play an action without spending an action point. And earlier in that same turn, you maybe had to spend an action point to play a treasure.

You are thinking about this backwards. It does not "cost" an Action to play an Action card, and it never has. If it did, it would cost 3 Actions to Throne Room a Smithy. All the Action type intrinsically means is that you may spend an Action during your Action phase to play that card (whenever you're not actively resolving any effects). Crown is an Action card, so you may spend an Action during your Action phase to play Crown. You may not spend an Action during your Action phase to play a Gold or a Duchy, because those cards do not have the Action type.

All the Treasure type intrinsically means is that you may play that card during the first portion of your Buy phase (before buying anything or paying off Debt); it doesn't cost any resources to do so. Crown is a Treasure card, so you may play it during that first portion of your Buy phase. Actions never enter into it. You may not play Smithy or Curse during your Buy phase, because those cards do not have the Treasure type.

Strangely, I'm not sure what the Victory type intrinsically means. I guess it means you need to follow its instructions/add its VP to your total at the end of the game, but that doesn't even necessarily apply to Overgrown Estate.

Can Band of Misfits be a debt-cost card? Or is Debt a separate currency, like Potions?

The one tricky thing is how these things work when cards compare costs. There it works like Potion: apples and oranges. A reddish hexagon with an 8 isn't more or less than $3.

you have all this money, but you also have Debt. So you can't buy anything.

You can pay off Debt in between buying cards. Example:

* I have $10 and 2 buys
* buy a City Quarter
* now I have $10, 8 Debt, and 1 buy
* pay off 8 Debt
* now I have $2, 1 buy
* I can now buy an Estate

If you buy a Debt card and you have no treasure in your deck (and no virtual money or gainers or anything) I guess you've just locked yourself out of the game!  You can't even buy a single copper to start pulling yourself out.
How does this happen? (Not claiming it can't, just curious on the possibilities--maybe Spoils play a role?)

Open Chapel, trash all your cards, after Chapel is the only card in your deck, buy a Debt card, now you can't buy anything and have no way of paying off the debt; your only hope is an opponent Masquerading you something that gives you +Coins.

Also, may have been answered before, but paying off debt does NOT use a Buy, correct?

Correct

Can't you conceivably also make it so that you're in debt the turn your opponent possesses you, so he can't buy anything at all?

Your opponent can choose to make you pay off your debt, then if you made enough money you can buy more cards for him to gain.

Guys: be careful with Royal Blacksmith.  If your deck is mostly Coppers, it can end up decreasing your handsize.

I don't think you need to "be careful" with that... Warehouse and Cellar also decrease your handsize, but that's ok because you replace those discarded Coppers with better cards. Granted, you don't want to open Royal Blacksmith and play it on turn 3....

Woah, I didn't even realize until reading another recent post.... this is way worse than I thought. If you open Royal Blacksmith, you instantly lose the game. If you and your opponent both open Royal Blacksmith, you must play on forever until one of you starves to death. Always bring a snack, that's my advice.

Well you don't have to play Action cards on your turn.

A gain is simply getting a card into your deck in whatever way it happens*, whether Ironworks, buying a card, or even gaining a Curse from an opponent's Witch. Maybe explaining it that way would help.
*Except for having it passed to you by Masquerade, or exchanging a Traveller, or when you trash a Fortress and it gets returned to your hand.

It is? How so? OS X has tons of keyboard shortcuts.

One counterexample to your claim that I always run into is how much more difficult it is to type the most common special characters on Windows. I have to memorize a special 4-digit code for each one. On Mac, option-command-hyphen is an em-dash, option-8 is a bullet point, etc.

For instance, Windows lets you map programs into Windows key+number key keyboard shortcuts. And then that shortcut starts that program up, or makes it active/inactive if it's already open. AFAIK, OS X requires you to use the graphical user interface if you want to launch a program.

Oh no, I have to scroll my mouse all the way to the right/left/down/wherever and click on the icon. So horrible!

That does sound horrible! I use Alfred so I can hit Option+Space and then start typing in the name of what I want to open. I don't even keep anything in my dock any more.

AFAIK the recent OS X updates have sped up the built-in Spotlight so that command+space does the same thing quickly enough, but I got used to Alfred before that happened so I stuck with it instead of switching to Spotlight.

And I concede that technically this is still using a graphical interface, but it's also a keyboard map to open any application at all :)

There could be an achievement for having owned expansions previously if the achievement system gets implemented. It wouldn't really help, but it would be pretty cool.

Like the achievements that are on my WOW account for doing things before they were updated, that you can't actually achieve any more.  Achievement Unlocked:  I survived the Goko/MF era...

Achievement Unlocked: Isotropic is going down? - played 100 or more games on isotropic

The opponent would need to reveal Moat before the Ambassador player chooses a card, so they could not even be sure they're blocking a Province.

And you should be for ending a sentence with a preposition!*

Aside from that, the League seems to be perfectly within its bounds and any negativity towards the League as a forum for competitive Dominion play seems to just be detrimental to the community as a whole.

At the risk of stating the obvious, I wanted to clarify why I upvoted this post (PPE: well that was all the original intent of this post was anyway):

If you want to play Dominion when you're tired, in a bad mood, and have a headache, then the league is still the best place to do that.

FTFY. If you want to play Dominion when you actually feel good about playing Dominion, finding an automatch on Making Fun is a way better place to do that.

The League is a great forum for competitive Dominion play, but scheduling matches can certainly be difficult, by no fault of the league moderators or other members of your division. This is why I took a break from the league around seasons 5-10, and why I'm doing the same thing right now--and as I said in my division's thread, I hope to return before long.

Apart from the inherent difficulty of scheduling matches and sometimes playing a match in a bad mental state, I've had nothing but good experiences with the League.

--

Adam, I really hope drsteelhammer's and Stef's posts (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=14758.msg568707#msg568707 and http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=14758.msg568709#msg568709) answered your questions.

I've spent over a year working to make Dominion broadcasts like these better, I've come a long way and the only outlet I have for improvement is the League champion matches(nobody seems to want to have any other competitive Dominion out there because we have the League, which is fine). That work is being discarded and I have no other outlet for this

If I'm understanding this section correctly, you think the only way you can improve as a commentator is by commentating championship matches? Why not other regular-season league matches, or even just casual matches? I'm not sure if my video card/internet connection or scheduling abilities would be up to snuff for this, but I'd be willing to try to setup matches with someone that you'd be able to commentate.
