Dominion Isotropic / Re: Veto strategy
« on: November 22, 2011, 04:14:51 pm »
I'm always tempted to veto nasty attacks, but then I'll never learn to use or counter them.  I try to play at least a few games with every card. In practice I'll try to veto a card that doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the set, or cards that I find incredibly boring, like Duchess.

Also, maybe it's just my stubborn contrarian nature, but when there's a "super-dominant" card on the board I'll often leave it on and then see if I can win without buying it, just for a challenge.  Like recently I (largely) ignored Tournament in a Colony game, went for Goons/Gardens, and beat my opponents with all their fancy prizes. That might be a bad example because Goons is also super dominant, but the point is, obvious strategies are playing it safe.  You'll never discover a really cool new strategy without trying some goofy fails in the meantime, IMO.

Sidenote: When I first started on Iso (read: like last month), I had a real love affair with the Treasure Map. And every time I played in veto mode my opponent would ax it. It made me sad.

Amen to that last one!

Gardens

On a Kingdom with lots of plus buyin'
I made every last Copper my-in.
Crammed every last card in
To feed hungry Gardens
But ended with just fifty-ny-in.

I would have gone Goons-Gardens from the get-go. (Wow that was an alliterative sentence).

Basically just like you played it, but without the trashing  - as many villages and Goons as I could manage and then rush the Gardens, buying copper with extra buys.  Maybe one or two Workshops to snap up the Gardens faster, especially once your green card/Copper stall gets unbearable. Normally I object to buying copper just to use a buy, even in the case of Goons or Gardens, but when it's powering up both? If you have all the Gardens in a multiplayer game, each copper bought with double Goons is worth 3.2 VP. Those coppers are Duchies! Obviously that's an unlikely case. But say you have a modest 5 Gardens in a 2p game. Buying a Copper with two Goons is still 2.5 VP, 3.5 for an estate. Which means a single double-Goons turn with five Gardens (no other money in play) nets 12 VP - two Provinces!

The only drawback to Goonsing with no money is deck slag and a Gardens deck screams for deck slag anyway, so it's like a horribly bloated match made in heaven, IMO. A tactician certainly wouldn't hurt, not just for the cards, but for the extra action (another Goons = another 2 VP) and the extra buy (an extra VP per Goons played).

But here, I've completely ignored the original question. Was it bad shuffle luck that, in a very thin deck, you couldn't get MV+Goons+Goons together?

I think it's always asking a lot for three cards to collide in a particular proportion, but it does sound like Lady Luck shafted you a bit.  But the thing is, if you rely on luck when there's a way to cheat it, your bad luck is really bad strategy.  And Tactician was made to cheat luck, especially in thin decks. So if your strategy heavily depends on cards coming into your hand together, don't ignore the Tactician. Especially when virtual money abounds, as ftl pointed out.

You're right. GM is a really bad example.

Alchemist

Should on your board alchemist pop,
Buy them all fast and don't stop.
Did your foe miss the split?
Then they'll prob'ly rage quit
As you slowly put each back on top.

Vault

If Vault is in play, some advice
I know Council Room looks real nice
But you'll certainly wince
When I buy a Province
Every time you play Council Room twice

This is a fun game.

I'm coming around on Cache.  A gold at 5 can be really good in, for instance a Grand Market race, and if those two coppers are, for instance, fueling a Spice Merchant engine, then OK. (Granted I'm not going to try to make a Spice Merchant engine if there's any more viable method.)

Also, excellent counter to Noble Brigand.  If you have Caches instead of Gold, that player who's spamming NB has nothing on you.  And if he's flooding your deck with copper anyway you're not going to notice two more.

And in a Gardens game? Three money cards in one buy?

It's highly situational, and there are many, many games where I will ignore it and wait to hit 6 for the Gold, but it's not by any means a terrible card.

As for Noble Brigand itself, speaking as a player who plays mostly 3-player, it's a pretty mean card and here's why.  In a Pirate Ship fest, I will buy no money and rely on virtual money in order to cripple the opponents PSs. I do the same thing in the rare event of an aggressive Thief player.  But that defense is useless against NB. If I have no money, it floods my deck with coppers, which is like a cursing attack that never ends.

Oh, I just reread your post. Given the three player I'm not sure the Duchy would have done it, but I'd have to check the log.

Edit: http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111120-182337-bb645fb9.html Duchy would not have made the difference.

If I recall correctly, Provinces would have been 4-4-4 and he was ahead by at least a Duchy. But I'll post the Council Room log when it goes up.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Really bad card ideas

Been lurking in this thread forever!

Witchtower - Action $4
Draw two cards or up to 6 cards in hand - your choice
Each other player gains a curse, which they can choose to gain on top of their deck or trash.

Young Bureaucrat - Action $3
Gain a Copper card; put it on top of your deck. Each other player may reveal a Bane card from his hand. If he doesn't, he reveals a Victory card from his hand and puts it on his deck (or reveals a hand with no Victory cards).

Setup: Add an extra Kingdom card pile costing 2 Treasure or 3 Treasure to the Supply. Cards from that pile are Bane cards.

Dear Dominion While Intoxicated,

Registered just to post this because I felt so terrible.

I'm sorry I bought a single saboteur, played it once on the second-to-last turn and hit your Province, with which you would have won the game.
