Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Dominion:Cities
« on: March 06, 2018, 06:06:07 am »
Most things have been said by more experienced fancards-designer than me (I' just a lousy lurker) but I also would like to encourage you to think about the flavour of your set. Most names are a little bit off compared to official Dominion. Cities is sounding of of actions, not victory cards. A victory heavy set should have card names focusing on lands and other form of property, not really the names you have chosen right now. Flavour is not extremely important, but is the nice touch that makes an expansion to feel just amazing.

I know that you got a lot of tough feedback, now, but hey - actually I have a quite similar expansion to yours somewhere in my old computer. This kind of cards was the things I wanted when I was fairly new to Dominion, but when I looked for somewhere to talk about it I found f.ds and realized "whoa, Dominion is a quite a different game than I first thought" - sure, it feels a bit dull that "extreme power" isn't allowed to exist in Dominion but in other hand you get a more subtle game that still can explode in insane power from time to time (and it's fairly easy to design kingdoms that allow you to do cray cray things). In my opinion thats better because it allows you to play with people who comes to Dominion for other reason than to buy shear power cards. It's still reasonable to try to create a new power set, but my advice is to try to increase the subtleness to your cards. Experiment with Debt for instance, which is the new way to allow super-cards to exist, or try to a invent a new form of obstacle to gain your cards other than the formal price.

I've noticed from other posts from you that you are fairly new to Dominion or at least have the new player mindset approaching the game and it's all fair and good - i quite miss those days a lot, but on the other hand you are missing out on some of the most intriguing aspect of the game. I still haven't found out why procession are so loved by the experts, because almost every time I try to use it I fail miserably, but I know I will found the key some day and the route to get there is extremely fun.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that on this forum you find players that have the expert mindset or others like me who are trying to learn it and they will look at Dominion completely different than you. It's good to remember when you are writing here.

Nobles, Market Square, Forager with a little help of Ghost.. gives you a whole lot a gold.

As far as I know there are quite many boards that involve junkers with no or poor trashing, aka Slog games, or am I missing something? Are slogs ever something you are able to choose?

Dominion getting boring?

Well, ehm, no.

However, I can see a pretty nice expansion theme here. However I myself can't even decide if "Tavern Witch" should let you yourself take the shot whilst you force everyone else to do it, so I'm not sure how it would work out..

Oh. It's not really possible. I'm a prosperity-guy though - I just love all the VP-cards and KC made me love Dominion more than any other game in the world. With the rest I can't choose. Alchemy and Dark Ages is somewhat worse than the others, but hey, I still love them as well, at least playing with them online.

Empires is a little bit extra good also, but when it comes to the cards it's more due too novelty than that it is outstanding in other ways compared to the whole I think.

It's not clear from your post whether you got an undo on your own misclick.

If you did not ask for an undo, or if you asked for an undo and was not granted one, then I think your move wasn't unsporting at all.  It wasn't sporting, but it also isn't unsporting.  It's just baseline expected behavior.

If you did get an undo, then I think your move is slightly unsporting.  But I wouldn't consider it egregiously out of line.  One never has an obligation to agree to an undo, except maybe if the opponent had granted one to you.

I didn't ask for it and maybe I should have mentioned that, but I don't really like to use the chat so that didn't cross my mind.

I mean, I've been reading a lot about what is seen as courtesy about undoes on the forum and it surprises me a little that two people can say "you did wrong" without even explaining why on issues like these. Why have undoes as a choice if it's so clearly wrong to deny something that will cause you to loose? Me and my friends go for never ask for undoes since we miss isotroopic and it's hard to remember to change track when playing with strangers but I'm trying to, I promise..

Did I wrong? I mean, from isotropic I learnt that misclics is part of Dominion Online in one way or another. Don't play careless. Most mistakes don't effect the opponent directly and is easy to grant, but this one, man.. I really wish it wasn't there, in what situation do you not want to reveal the gold?

Dear opponent, I'm sorry. I hope I don't have to do it again, but honestly I think I would've..

Yeah you did wrong and you're obviously not sorry.

Murgh. You're wrong. I'm sorry that the misclick-possibility is there to begin with, since I think it shouldn't be. But alright, then I press the undo button myself the first time and ignore the feeling that I'm a prick doing so. If you read my post you should notice that I'm uncertain what decision that is seen as the unsportful one. My judgement was that the sportful move is to not asking to undo a legionary-misclick. fd that's wrong I change and will ask about it in the future.
It feels weird though.

My favorite card was Harem for so long.

Can't really accept that it actually sucks :'(

Legionary.

This was a real issue. I try my best to play nice, but I also like to win. Legionary creates a real issue since this misclic is so obvious and so severe for the opponent if they grant it. First time it happened to me and I let it pass just because I didn't want my opponent to come in the position to choose between sportsmanship and will to win- it was my mistake, fair enough. Later on though he did the same one, and this was at a much more critical stage, if the attack would have hit me I would most probably lose. I denied, I don't want to lose. My opponent went mad.

I buy Curse more often than I buy Bureaucrat.

Curse is in every game though, comparison invalid.

What an awful kingdom card Curse would have been...

287
I don't think I'll ever fully understand how Bureaucrat made it to the 2nd edition. It was always talked about the same way as the other base set duds, and there it is next to bottom, right above a card based on the premise that trashing Copper is a bad thing.

Silver-gainers is fun though, and have it's uses. I can't say I would miss it (more than I miss Scout :(...) but I can understand why it didn't get the axe too. Is it worse than Coppersmith? Maybe, but I don't see the point to replace both of them. B-crat is alright.

It is a nice beginner card as well, to teach how hurtful green cards can be and how to counter such attacks, you gotta think of the newbs also and I don't think it is a dud in the same way on the BM+X-level..

288
Agree that Fishing Village is way too high.

Menagerie deserves to be higher in my opinion. Could replace it with Forager I think.

Orange scary card (Dungeon, Gear, Amulet a little) is orange and scary, I need to learn how to play them good it seems..

Dominion General Discussion / Re: $3 Cost Card Rankings Bottom Half
« on: January 11, 2018, 05:10:35 am »
This list makes me appreciate how well done the 3$- section is. Neither of this cards is a true dud for me. Some I haven't learnt to utilize (Develop, I'm looking at you), some creates games that is less fun, but I think all cards on this list have their true uses and not too seldom either. Mastercard last? Boy.

290
Lurker is too low down for sure. Or maybe I just never seen it bust enough yet to understand why not everyone has put it at top #3 straight away. Really weird card.

Welcome! Fellow libertarian here. You should check out this magazine I write for... http://reason.com/

Cool! I read it regularly :) I'm active at https://cor.ax/ even though our Swedish sister project https://bubb.la/ is more prioritised at the moment.

Introductions / Hello
« on: January 05, 2018, 11:50:47 am »
Hello everyone!

Been a Dominion-fan since 2009 and been reading on this forum a whole lot from time to time. Played as most intensely around 2012 but never really figured out how to be a true skilled player. The skill-thing doesn't really matter much though since I enjoy the game so much over all. The competitive aspect of the game is nice, but it's easy to have fun with the game even if I don't really know what I'm doing (or should be doing). But it's also nice to be better and given that I enjoy reading the forum so much I thought I better be a proper member.

On a more personal level I'm from Sweden and currently residing in Malta. Is active on the libertarian political scene and is soon going to be working full time with libertarian projects - but politics is yuck so never mind.

Nice to be here. Thanks for all the advice throughout the years.

Ok, My experiences don't say much really, but I been in more than two games now where one player gets the bonus alone and still manage to loose. It might be stupid, idk, but it's not necessarily game breaking in any sense. Tournament was much worse in that regard in the beginning. I remember it as the one to hit the first Prize would _always_ win the first couple of games I played with it. That's not the case anymore at all and I think we certainly will come around ML in the same way. Give it time.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Nocturne: Yay or nay?
« on: January 05, 2018, 08:04:52 am »
Still exploring both Nocturne and Empires but I like what I meet in Nocturne. I'm one of those who like the randomness in Dominion and is there for very soft for Boons and also the hexes (even though *gaah* when it hit's you hard). I understand that more skilled players detest it, but it makes it more fun for my level. I'm more impressed over all by Empires, but I think I will like Nocturne more than Dark Ages.

Over all 4/5 Very Nices on Noct, where I think Empires will get a full 5/5.

295
Maybe common knowledge, but to be able to pile out the magpies with the help of watchtower was.. rather satisfying..

Bwaha.

Thank you guys!

I didn't ggot the point of this cst, but then I read up here and ended up on a quite attack-heavy board (Militia, Ghost Ship, Torturer) where it was a struggle to came above 4. Starting to salting regularly and suddenly.. win. Very impressive. This is indeed a quite neat thingy.

Got rewarded with a "gfy".. I suspect it's not anything nice..
