Weekly Design Contest / Re: Weekly Design Contest #188: Make a Wish
« on: June 02, 2023, 03:23:25 pm »

Fairy Godmother - $3

Gain one Wish per other player in the game.

At the end of your next turn, each other player may return a non-Duration card you have in play to the supply.
She can grant useful boons... just make sure to be back before midnight!

Scales with player count because a) I didn't want only one opponent to get to choose and b) you're going to need more help if you have more evil stepsisters!

What non-Duration cards are there that you might have in play at the end of your next turn? Could be Throne Room variants that stay out to track Durations that have been played multiple times; but are there any others? I feel like I must be missing something here.

Contest Closed. A team of domesticated monkeys with premium access to GPT-5 has been unleashed to commence judging.
Nice judging.
I did wonder if you were going to run the card texts past an AI chatbot as part of the judging.

Hmm, Way of the Pixie goes infinite with Trail or Fortress I think.
Maybe I should change it so you trash the cards at the end of your turn. Trail could still give you infinite draw at the end of your turn, but that's less bad.

My updated entry v0.2:

Quote
Way of the Pixie
Set aside up to 2 non-Duration copies of this you have in play. Follow the instructions on the set-aside cards then exile them.

FAQ: "copies of this" includes this, the card that you are playing using Way of the Pixie.

Previously v0.1:

Quote
Way of the Pixie
Set aside all non-Duration copies of this you have in play. Follow the instructions on the set-aside cards then trash them.

This is interesting, but how do you envision tracking the cost of each one? Do i use a grease pencil on each card as i buy them? And erase after each game?

Each copy of New Town has a variable cost. Whenever you want to know the cost of it you can work it out from the number of Action cards in play at that time. As segura says.

Might need an FAQ for how the cost-increase interacts with cost-reducers. Probably you just apply all increases/reductions and then check that the end result is not less than 0.

New Town
$1* Action

+1 Action per $1 this costs.

This costs $1 more per Action card in play (anywhere).

How many Actions will you need? It pays to plan ahead.
New Towns are also great trash-for-benefit fodder, if you can gain them at the right time.

If it's on a cargo ship, it'll arrive at the start of your next turn. Your opponent might be taking a really long turn though...
... though if they are intentionally taking a really long turn in order to delay the arrival of Plunder, you might choose not to play with them again.

So i tried a few different names, but most were too complex so i settled for something simple.

Duration cards only stay in play if there is something to track on a future turn. So if you choose the first option then it won't stay in play... which makes this card strictly better than Laboratory!

And now back to Myrtle; once she covers her eyes, you cannot see them anymore through her hands. Her eyes literally cease to exist during the time they are covered and thus she is unable to perceive anything with them.

I like the way of answering the question because of how quietly unsettling it is.

Reminds me of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy:

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Watchtower + Trail (+ WotM Lurker)

With the current rulings, you can't play Trail twice. If you play it on-gain, then Watchtower can't find it to trash it.
What if you react with Watchtower first?

Then you will fail to play Trail on-gain; because the current Stop Moving rule doesn't allow a card to be played if it can't be moved into play.

Ok, thanks. I thought I remembered something like that but couldn't find it when I searched the wiki. Then I thought "Throne Room + Feast still means Feast is played twice, so...". But I've found the ruling now, from June 2021.

So yes, ok, this doesn't work then. Oh well.

Not sure if this has been noted already, or if I've missed something which means it doesn't work, but this seems like a fun infinite loop.

When you gain a Trail, if you reveal a Watchtower from your hand to trash the Trail, you can then play Trail twice. Have I got that right?

Now if you're playing with Way of the Mouse, with Lurker set aside, and there's a Trail in the trash and a Watchtower in your hand, you can make an infinite loop, enough to gain every Action card from the Supply, then draw and play them all in a single turn.

I think.

Play a card as Lurker, gaining the Trail (1) from the trash.
React to (1) with Watchtower to trash the Trail (2)
React to (1) with Trail to play the Trail (but it doesn't move into play), as Lurker, gaining the Trail (3) from the trash
React to (3) with Watchtower to trash the Trail (4)
React to (3) with Trail to play the Trail (but it doesn't move into play), as Lurker, gaining the Trail (5) from the trash
React to (5) with Watchtower to trash the Trail (6)
React to (5) with Trail to play the Trail (but it doesn't move into play), as Lurker, gaining the Trail (7) from the trash

etc...

React to (2n-1) with Watchtower to trash the Trail (2n)
React to (2n-1) with Trail to play the Trail (but it doesn't move into play), as Lurker, gaining the Trail (2n+1) from the trash.

So the single Trail has just been gained and trashed lots of times, as many as you like. But the fun bit is that you haven't resolved any of the "when you trash this" triggers of Trail yet.

Now you can react to (2), (4), (6), ... (2n) with Trail to play the Trail n times, where n is as large as you like. First play it as itself enough times to draw your deck, then play it as Lurker twice and itself once, to trash, gain and draw an Action card from the Supply, repeating for each Action card in the Supply.

All the Action cards are in your hand and you have something like 2n Actions so you can play them all.

They look good, but they'd look even better without the text!

If playing with veterans of the game you could remove the text entirely, just keep the border info. That would look cool. And you get to play a game that's completely unfathomable to the uninitiated.

It fell out from the numbers and the tiles I had. I think you knew Jimmm's numbers but not his colours?

You had both 5's and 2 whites, thus 1 black. I had the white 7.
Jimmm had no 5's, both 4's and 3 blacks, so ignoring the 4's that's two blacks and a white. I had white 6 and 9.

Probably I had an advantage there because the two of you had no numbers in common.
