Another 'lesson' learned.  I often 'assume' I understand how to play cards, but often discover some 'rule'.   This time it was the Quarry.
We never realized that the -2 coins was 'cumulative'.  It just seemed too good to be true, making expensive card REALLY cheap.  I basically won my game because of that rule.

I have a few questions about the ShardofHonor card generator
1.  The Primary vs. Secondary option see to be 'flipped' - I have an Action - Duration - Reaction card (same type as Caravan Guard)
But in order to get the correct color layout (to match Caravan Guard), I have to make the primary as 'Reaction', then secondary as 'Duration'.
This seems counter-intuitive to me.  Sure I can adjust the sequence, but maybe it is just me that has noticed this?
2. I could not figure out how to use the 'Additional Bold Keywords' option
3. Is the split position options, in place for a reason? Are there Expansion option that have the coloring not using the 1/2 option?
4. VP Token option used in any of the current expansions?
Thanks

1. I agree with you, but if I change it now, all links will be broken...
---- Good point.  Yeah I really would not like to have to fix them.  And I should NOT complain either.  These card generators are AWESOME.
My apologies for noticing (I test software for a living).
2. For example VioletCLM's Sellsail
-- I see, I could not figure out the 'use' format.  It required the +1 symbols (I just thought it would bold any word in the field.  Thanks.
3. The split position could be used to achieve an effect as in Pasture or Distant Lands, where the green coloring is not perfectly in the middle.
Still an awesome option, although I could not 'replicate' the DL effect.
4. VP Tokens are used in the German prints of Prosperty and Empires (by ASS Altenburger) instead of the normal VP symbol. A stupid decision of them, but I rather have all my cards consistent...
I like the VP Token option as a new option to use in my card text instead of typing "Victory Point token" I can type #"  Thanks for making the card designer so 'flexible'.

One of my opponents has been unable to play IRL, so we decided to play Dominion.Online.   I humbly think of myself as a good player (and understand the 'rules of the game'), but a few times I have encountered a few moments in Dominion.Online to teach me the 'correct rules'.

It seems we have been playing the Trade Route incorrectly.
We incorrectly assumed that the 'Trade Route' mats were meant as '1 per player' (since there were 8 of them).
We had played were if one player gains a Victory cards they alone gain the token to 'their' mat (this was wrong).
Note: I had mockingly complained before about issuing 8 mats when only 6 players were allowed at most.  And now I see that it is 'even worse' in that even with 6 players, we only need 1 Trade Route mat.

Now (correct me if I am wrong) we see that the Trade Route is a 'shared' mat for all players.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Where to buy blank cards?
« on: March 01, 2019, 01:32:39 pm »
I was thinking the same thing. If you really want to be cost-effective, get Dark Ages. It gives you the best value for money of any set.

Dark Ages is 500 cards for $~45, vs 250 cards for ~$18 with the Base Cards box. It isn't super close, Base Cards are the Best Buy here.

It is disappointing that buying the base cards is our 'best buy'.  I would think that the supplier would have a 'bulk' option for the blank cards.  As I have determine the best option to playtest, is to use the base cards as the 'support' for my 'playtest' cards (printed on standard paper inside sleeves).

Variants and Fan Cards / Violet CLM Card Generator - Split view option?

In Violet CLM Card Generator, there is an option for what I would describe as a 'Split' view.  Is this for creating something like the Bane card marker?

Rules Questions / Re: Face Down requirement for Knights and Ruins?
« on: February 25, 2019, 08:30:04 am »
Well I understand the need to limit the 'peeking' and 'counting' rules, but I would have solved them them
1) The peeking issue is resolved by a) so what if the 'next' card is revealed. The cards are not significantly different from one another (for both Knights and Ruins) and doubt it would significantly change the outcome of a card selection b) I rarely have an issue with cards sliding around to 'reveal' the next card c) since it is 'possible' (although unlikely) to replace the Ruins cards with Ambassador, then there is an opportunity to have the next card 'temporarily' replaced, and thus temporarily revealed

2) The counting issue is resolved by requiring users to 'count' face down.  If players are going to 'cheat' by this method, they they are going to cheat no matter what rules you put in place.

With that said, I guess most people play with a variant and rarely turn these 2 piles face down.

Rules Questions / Re: Face Down requirement for Knights and Ruins?
« on: February 21, 2019, 12:34:17 pm »
This was actually just discussed yesterday in this other rules thread.

There are 2 reasons for it.

1) It would be easy to accidentally see a card other than the top card if they were face up. When you take the top card, you can easily nudge the pile so that they aren't perfectly stacked. You would have to be super careful when taking a card to not accidentally show more cards.

2) You are allowed to count cards in supply piles, but if they were all face up, counting them would basically automatically let you see them.
Excellent replies once again.  I kind of thought that option 1 would be 'a reason' but my opponents tend not to 'cheat' so I did not give it justice, but I can see how that would be a benefit.  So I guess we have playing a 'variant' for the last 10 (or 5 years...LOL).

I never really 'knew' this 'counting allowed' as a rule.  We have just assumed that it was 'allowed' because it is too easy to see when there is only 1 or 2 cards left, so why not allow players to 'see' what other cards are 'left'.

Rules Questions / Face Down requirement for Knights and Ruins?
« on: February 21, 2019, 11:22:43 am »
I just discovered a 'rule' about Ruins and Knights that is not clear on why it is in place?

Knights "... Keep it face down except for the top card..."
Ruins "... face down with the top card face up..."

Since the top card 'covers' the card underneath, and once the top card is removed (buying/gaining), the next card is then would be immediately (?) turned faced up?

Why not keep all of these cards 'face up', because it is 'covered' by the top card.  And because the face down card would be 'revealed' (even if it is eventually turned back face down, it has 'now' been 'revealed' so why not always allow the card under the top card to be revealed immediately when the top card is taken?

This may somehow be due to the 'Ambassador' rule "... If you reveal a card which is part of a Supply pile with differently named cards, such as Ruins or Knights, you can only return two cards to the supply pile if they have the same name. Other players will only gain cards with that name....'

But not to get off onto a different topic, but it seems to be related, this Ambassador rule is not clear in the FAQ section as I think I remember seeing something somewhere about you cannot return the card to the supply for Knights (because you'd never match the top card's name), and you could only return the top card to the Ruins if it 'matched' (but I cannot find this reference at the moment.  But despite that fact.  The Ambassador's ruling is kind of wishy-washy (IMHO), as you COULD return to the Ruins pile (IF) the current pile has at the time the Ruin card that would be returned to the Ruins pile?

Rules Questions / Re: Debt clarification
« on: February 21, 2019, 10:27:48 am »
I think the basic idea is that a 'buy is a buy'.  So you are 'buying' a debt card.  You are not allowed to 'buy' a card with $0 cost if you have Debt, so given this, you cannot buy card with debt either.  Although, I am still hoping this could be added to the FAQ clarification.

Rules Questions / Coffer vs Coin with -1 Coin Adventure token
« on: February 21, 2019, 09:43:07 am »
When a player has the -1 coin token, when a player gains a +1 Coffer does that remove -1 Coin Token?
My guess is no as 'Coffers' are not 'Coins' (note: if playing with 1st edition use of 'Coin token' cards (aka Baker) does this ruling still stand?  Is is possible to have this clarified in the FAQ section?
-Thanks

Rules Questions / Debt clarification
« on: February 21, 2019, 09:39:08 am »
A question about the Debt FAQ.

If you have 'debt' you cannot 'buy' another card that has only debt in its cost (thus going into more debt).  So the question is maybe semantics, do you buy a debt card if you are not paying $?  Is it possible to make this more clear in the FAQ?

So after years of IRL

Are we talking about the 10 years or the 5 years here?
10 years of IRL.  I started Dominion in early 2009 (I did not know it was 'new' then)
5 years here? I have been on this forum for 5 years??  My first post was in 2017... odd for me not to post for the first 3 years.

I believe Awaclus is referring to the discrepancy he pointed out in this post.
Good call... not sure... I am certain it was 2009, but maybe time has shifted for me and it FEELS like 10 years.  Either way it has been an enjoyably loooong time.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion current Popularity?
« on: February 19, 2019, 04:24:28 pm »
To get back to the original question, I think an aspect of the change in Dominion's popularity has to be that it basically birthed a huge genre which is the deck-building game. Regardless of whether you consider other deck-builders to be Dominion's equal, the fact is that while people who like deck-building games used to have one place to go and it was Dominion, now they have 1,000 places to go and only some of them are Dominion.

But that probably goes both ways -- all those other deck-building games are entry points that will lead some percentage of people who discover them back to Dominion.
I wonder how many start out with 'Other' Deck Builders and THEN discover Dominion.

So after years of IRL, I am trying the Dominion.Online.  Question 1) where do I post my concerns about the game? I test software for a living so I have found a few issues, but do not want to make them public.  2) Have they considered allowing a version of purchasing playing a number of games per purchase vs per month payment plans?

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Fan Wiki option?
« on: February 12, 2019, 11:03:12 am »
I feel, that a wiki would not be the right system, because the idea of a wiki is, that everyone can edit pages. What I really would like is just a platform where you can create cards and other people can comment and rate them.

My initial interest in a Wiki was a way to compare all of the available Fan Cards that have been created.  I have designed about 50 different card types (and I am confident that I have not repeated other previously created cards).  While a wiki is usually 'public', I think they can be setup in a way were only approved users can add entries (as to avoid 1 and one entries) or other malicious activities.  The closest option I can think of is just allowing a 'tabular' format similar to >>>

Dominion: Renaissance Previews / Re: Artifact Origin cards as a card type
« on: February 08, 2019, 10:55:05 am »
What the type Reserve "means" is when you play it, you put it on your Tavern mat.

But this by itself seems as arbitrary as a thing to give a type to as any other thing that cards do when you play them. Cards with "trash this" don't have a type; Cards with "+1 Action" don't have a type; etc.
Good point... I could have gotten carried away and had "Lab", "Village" as types if I extrapolated my thoughts out more.
Note: I still like to see more types, but I can understand why there were limited.

Variants and Fan Cards / Playtesting and Printing non-Fan Cards?
« on: February 08, 2019, 09:28:29 am »
I soon will be playtesting my cards with my opponents.  I have discovered that printing the cards can quickly drive up the cost of this hobby.  Someone suggesting just 'sleeving' a paper copy in with the blank cards.  This seems to be sufficient enough to 'mask' my Fan card with the other Dominion cards.
Here is my dilemma.  I am not a fan of sleeving my regular cards as they are not easy to shuffle.
So I am THINKING of printing off paper copies of the regular cards I want to use as my playtest Kingdom. This is so that ALL of my playtest cards have the same 'look and feel'.
This seems like it could cross into a grey-area.  Has anyone done something similar? How does BGG and Donald X approach this sensitive topic?
Thanks
