Galzria - At #361, you stated "Having played Mafia to success with the long, reasoned posts...".  In that success, were you Mafia?

2252
THIS POST WAS STARTED IMMEDIATELY AFTER READING #444.  NOTE: MY SIGNATURE HAS ADDED AN ABBREVIATION FOR JOTHEONAH.

What the hell have I gotten myself into.  This is an insane amount of material.  I'm up to the minute as I begin this post. I will post more later tonite on the issues that have come up surrounding me specifically since I was last current.  Note that my schedule is somewhat irregular as I am the caregiver for my elderly mother. Things come up that keep me away from the keyboard for long periods of time (3+ hours) - meals, outings, etc.  However, I stay logged in, because its just easier.  FFR, my intent is to spend the most amount of time here between about 20:30 and 23:59 EDT (UTC -5?)

My spreadsheet is handwritten (I'm a dinosaur compared to you guys), so I'll take things in order I wrote them down.  Here's what I've noticed from today, and/or want to pursue:

1) At #337 (p14), JO wrote: "We can't be looking for obvious tells, but we should hunt for subconcious ones." This statement hit me oddly.  The first part of it somehow feels like an overt subliminal suggestion (if there could be such a thing) not to look for tells. Just doesn't give off the right vibe somehow.

2) @ O, (or should I say @. - don't want to leave you bummed at not having an abbreviation, cause ya know, JO has one now): In #275 (p12), you stated "and that I'm not voting randomly (by the rickroll) anymore so your point was completely moot".  Can you provide me with the post # in which you made it clear that you had abandoned your intent to vote randomly?  I must have missed it.  Also, what's a "rickroll"? (Please don't say "$20, same as in town").  no pun intended

3) @O again: In #350 (p15) you said "...RVS doesn't mention anything about Jokes or Humor, which most of the random votes have been (notable exception: Popsofctown)". I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to get across?  Can you elaborate?

More in the next hour.

@O: Puppies of large dogs are cute. I've not encountered puppies of yappy-type dogs enough times to form an opinion on them.
I'm fine with smart children, but there are a lot of obnoxious, loud, undisciplined children that I prefer to stay clear of me.
I think this is where I say: God Bless America.

@ALL: Can we get more focused on gleaning actionable information?  This is going to be incredibly unwieldy 6 weeks from now at the end of Day 3, when there could still be as many as 12 people in the game.

Reposted to bold the unvote and the re-vote

I might use . instead.  That wouldnt cause much problem would it?

OK, it's not going to be possible for me to play this game without humor.  It's who I am, and the game is supposed to be fun.  I typed and deleted (about 3 times) in my opening post the following, and should have just left it in:

I will be using humor (and potentially emoticons) in my posts.  If that gets me lynched, so be it.  This is a game of evaluations, and if I am lynched because I say something intended to be funny, it will help me evaluate my game experience.

You have all been warned!

2257
VOLTGLOSS - Can you tell us newbies what the purpose and potential use of the discussion thread is, and why would someone potentially object?

2258
I note that O did not respond to my vote, but did, in the next few posts vote for two different folks in quick succession.

Disregard for a newbie's opinion? Perhaps.
Deflection of attention? HMMM, interesting thought.

2259
Insomniac - Your timing is impeccable. Not lurking, just getting caught up.  Played golf this morning and this is the first time I've been able to read since confirming my role last night.  6 new pages, wow. Someone expressed concern that this would be longer than MIII, I suspect it will be very long indeed with 15 of us.

Voltgloss - Thanks for moderating this, with all you have going on.

Axxle - Thanks for the link to the two articles.  I found the second article to be particularly important.

Couple of housekeeping things before I begin the substantive part of my post:
1) I am a newbie, having never played this game at all in any format.
2) I have created a temporary signature to define my abbreviations for people's names. If your name is not abbreviated in my signature, I will do my best to use it in its entirety.  I did this because someone in an earlier post used the salutation "@G", and there are 4 names in this game that start with "G".
3) I'm not going to read MI or MII (with the exception of checking the two starting posts, to verify the absence of the players in my first question below), and I will likely abandon my reading of MIII, which is currently in Night 1.
4) My gender is male, if it helps anyone avoid awkward choices of pronoun.
5) I am on EDT in the US, if that is useful info for anyone in evaluating posting patterns. (God, I'm such a data whore).

Now, on to substance:

@Theo, Gloob, Green:  You were not in MI or MII or MIII.  Have you played Forum Mafia before?  Have you played IRL?

After reading the second article that Axxle suggested, I am of the opinion that random voting on Day 1 is anti-town.  Day 1 is indeed a time for to be as non random as possible.  So, I'll be bold:

VOTE: O, because he will be voting randomly.

Pre-post addendum:  OMG, while I'm wrestling with this, another full page?  I started this literally one minute after #211.

2260
You ask too many questions.

Ah, so I'm well suited to be an investigator.

2261
I changed my mind.  We're not letting you in unless you read MI and MII, read all of my councilroom logs for games in which I purchase a Gardens, and watch twelve Zerg fast expand replays.

Then you can play.
If I've counted correctly, you've bought a Gardens in 133 games.  109 would have been my limit.

What now?

Also, for what it's worth, if I play, I (sort of) promise not to use emoticons.  Maybe.

2262
I have a fan club???

And how did you know I play Zerg?

2263
POTENTIAL 13th PLAYER:

I am intrigued with the notion of playing, but I've never played before, and have only read parts of M III. I'm not interested in reading any of M I or MII, as the proposed 2 week interval between deadlines would seem to guarantee that more reading will be required for M IV than any of the previous iterations.  Given all that, would I be welcome, and more importantly, would I be an asset to the game?

All add-ons disabled, cache cleared, firefox uninstalled then reinstalled, still the same issue...

As far as Javascript goes, my Google-fu indicates that reinstalling the web browser is the only way to reinstall Javascript...

I'm going to try and older version of firefox and see if that helps. Any more suggestions?

Thanks for your help so far...
Do you have the same issues if you try Chrome?

Dominion General Discussion / Knowing you are behind early
« on: May 31, 2012, 04:02:22 pm »
In a game reports thread, RisingJaguar gave the following advice (context is unimportant for my question):
...Try to recognize the start and evaluate if you are behind or ahead, that should be able to tell you a bit of the outcome.
This notion of evaluating whether I'm ahead or behind (and I don't necessarily mean score) is something that I think I'm getting better at - recognizing that I'm behind, at least from the standpoint of believing that my opponent has made better choices in the first 3 or 4 turns. My question is: what sorts of things should I be thinking about if I believe I'm behind (in those terms) early in a game?

Multiple posts over the past few months have stated that it's usually a good idea to stick with a strategy if at all possible.  I may still lose by sticking with an inferior strategy, but I will gain information that is usable long term - viability of my combo, pace of the game with the two strategies in play, etc.  AND I avoid increasing the likelihood of losing due to a large change of direction putting me further behind in terms of the quality of my deck.

I know everything is board dependent, but can I get some broad brushstroke ideas?  Maybe "categories" of things to evaluate?  Again, the question is "what sorts of things should I be thinking about/evaluating if I believe I'm behind (in terms of deck quality) early in a game?

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Bug Report: Treasure Map + Noble Brigand
« on: May 31, 2012, 03:37:14 pm »
Golds were in her hand. She draws 5 before you start your turn.
PeterJohn - Grujah's post is spot on, but may not be clear due to its brevity, or perhaps if you are new to the game.  What he is saying is that the 4 golds that your opponent gained to the top of her deck during her "turn" were drawn into her new hand (along with a fifth card of course) immediately after her cleanup phase, and therefore (just) before you started your turn.  They were therefore not on the top of her deck when you played the Noble Brigand, and you got to see what the top two cards of her deck were at the time you played the NB.

If you've played IRL you know probably know that the game's mechanic is described in the rules as "ABC" - play an Action, Buy a card, then Clean up.  I teach new folks that there is a "D" phase - Draw your new hand.  As others have posted, your turn is not over until you have drawn your new hand.

Hope this helps. Welcome to the forum and to Isotropic.  I think you will find this community very civil, helpful, and fun.

Edited to fix typo and to add the final sentence to paragraph 1.
Second edit: To insert the word "new" (in boldface) in sentence 2 for more clarity.

Game Reports / Re: Grand Market + Apprentice + Bank
« on: May 31, 2012, 10:15:06 am »
Great post, it helped me a lot.  The part that helped me the most was the pre-game discussion of your approach.

I am however, confused about one thing (the boldface below was added by me):

...Ooryl did get an unfortunate hand in turn 12, only being able to Apprentice away two Coppers. Meanwhile, I finally get my second Grand Market, trashing my Baron to do so (I could've trashed Contraband, however I still think the $3 that I get from it is far better than a Baron with only one Estate in the deck, despite the fact that I avoided playing Contraband here to prevent Oorly from blocking the Grand Market buy).

Turn 13, we each get a Grand Market, making his count 4 to my 3, but I think I'm still in good shape; my economy is much better than his at this point, and I have much more appealing targets for my Apprentices than he does (he has his Baron and his Grand Markets, which he won't be willing to trash so easily, and I have 4 Golds, a Contraband, and my Baron).

The log says you only bought one Baron, and confirms that you trashed it on Turn 12.  Am I missing something, or is this a typo?

DG, what does "play the thief into strength for you" mean?  Can you say this a different way so that I understand?

I keep them in the original box + extra stuff in the Cornucopia box at home.  http://jshgaming.com/IMAG0041.jpg  I use jewelry bags from Wal-Mart to hold the cards; they are extremely cheap and fit perfectly.  For travel, I found a metal case that currently holds all of them.  http://jshgaming.com/IMAG0108.jpg  Dark Ages is gonna be too much for it.  If they were sleeved, I'm not sure what I'd do.  Seems like too much hassle...
JSH, I have questions:

1) Are you putting one group of 10 cards into each little ziploc bag (e.g., all 10 copies of Witch)?
2) How do you arrange kingdom cards - alphabetically?
3) In one picture, the cards are in a box.  In the other, the cards are in something like a briefcase.  Do you use both?  I'm unsure from your post.
4) And finally - Is the water in the photographs lying under the setup checklist warm?  If so, is there property for sale? 8)

Oh, and...
Also, wondering if this Amazon page is legit: http://www.amazon.com/Rio-Grande-Games-Dominion-Cards/dp/B007MKLX84/ref=sr_1_2?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1337973643&sr=1-2
Yeah, not paying $12 in shipping. I'll wait for it to show in in FLGS or regular Amazon.

Did not even notice that.  Tricksy little hobbitses, they are.
...+1 for the Lord of the Rings reference.

+1 for you for +1-ing me!  But seriously, I say we Scour whatever Shire "Funagain Games" came from for that ridiculous shipping.
+1 to you for +1-ing me for +1-ing you.
Nice engine you guys have built there.  8)

Well,

http://andrewprasetyojo.heroku.com/
At the risk of sounding like the Grammar Nazi, the "About" section of his webpage is riddled with poor English and spelling errors.  This may say nothing about his programming skills but it does suggest an inattention to detail, and/or a failure to involve others to mitigate his weaknesses.  I have to chuckle at the irony when a designer's own web page is less than inspiring.

2275
You could open IW/Scheme, use IW to gain lots of maps and scheme to play the IW as much as possible.  By not buying non cantrip cards, you'd keep your effective deck size small and quickly gain a large TM density mitigating the luck factor of the card.  Then use your newly gained golds to grab those provinces, picking up silver with the IW once you're done with going for maps.

I COULD do that... but not doing that did get my 4 Provinces in 13 Turns. Do you think your IW/Scheme/TM plan could really do that well? I obviously got great shuffle luck, but let's say it had taken me 15 Turns to get those 4 Provinces. Worth it?

My first suggestion was just off the top of my head.  I went and did a little solitaire and well, it's kinda hard to know how well it needs to work.  I found that with the IW/Scheme opening, you often get $2 for an embargo.  Which would obviously be played on the gold pile if the opponent is not going for maps thus denying them that card.  So with these embargoes, a benchmark is kinda hard to set.  So it really is hard to compare this to your strategy.  Could you have gotten your provinces when you did if the gold pile was embargoed say around turn 7 or 8ish?

However, in the solitaire games, it did suffer from the luck of the draw.  Sometimes I would have 4 maps in my deck after the second reshuffle, sometimes only 2.  Sometimes they hit, sometimes they wouldn't.  So this strategy is very subject to luck of the draw, but it also has some ability to hinder the opponents.  It probably isn't the optimal strategy, but it has the potential to be great.

So to wrap up, here's a good ole chemistry analogy.  Treasure map games are like Mössbauer spectroscopy.  When they're good, they're really really good.  However they are only really really good in certain games.

*For those interested, Mössbauer spectroscopy requires the source to emit gamma rays.  It is therefore limited to certain isotopes of certain elements and thus can only be used in limited cases.  But when it is used, the spectrum it provides has an extremely high sensitivity.

+1 for spectroscopy in general, and +3 for Mossbauer specifically.
