What can I do to save my friends from leaving? Or do I just need new gaming friends? :P Any ideas on how I can make it seem interesting to them again?

Locusts:

I like the idea of it saying "when this is trashed, gain a curse" I think another solution could be to have it give yourself a ruins every time you play it, and then having it say "when this is trashed, draw a card. You may trash a card from your hand" That way it can still be a $3 curser, but if you want to curse your opponents, you have to deal with ruins.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: The swingiest card ever
« on: June 27, 2017, 02:26:26 pm »
I've had some pretty swingy games with the travelers. Especially Champion.  Whoever goes first gets a sizable advantage and sometimes your traveler gets hit by their warrior, then you're deck is hosed.  That doesn't mean you played bad, it just means that you got unlucky.  Feels pretty swingy to me.

Dominion Articles / Re: Miser/Fountain Miser/Gardens
« on: June 23, 2017, 04:15:12 pm »
These have kind of been my thoughts as well.
Miser would give you some "trashing" where normally you don't want any of that on a gardens board, and later you could buy a gardens or a duchy any turn it showed up, but I'm guessing by that time the game is almost over already and you would have been better off buying a gardens in the first place.
Still, if anyone happens to try using miser as part of a gardens strategy, let me know how it goes.  I love finding ways to make bad cards good.

Dominion Articles / Miser/Fountain Miser/Gardens

I read the Miser Thread, and I didn't see anyone mention this, but is has anyone tried/had success with Miser on a gardens board or with Fountain in the kingdom? Miser is usually pretty slow and not a great option, but I have always wondered if it would be any good with gardens or fountain, since you get to keep your coppers. If so, what would be the best way to make it work?

I don't own Adventures so I haven't tried it out on my own yet.

I just moved from Utah!

I should have guessed with the verse from Ether! Too bad you left.  I need real life dominion friends

Hello, I've been reading stuff from this forum for a while now, especially when I have rules questions and such, but only recently did I actually get an account.  I love it.

I've played a lot of dominion in real life, and I own most of the expansions, but honestly, most people that I play with just aren't as into it as I am.  After one game I'm just itching to play another, where most people just want to put it away.  That's why I started playing online.  (Side note.  If there are any of you who happen to be from Utah looking for someone to play dominion with, I'm your guy.)

This Forum is awesome.  Thank you!

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Playing Vassal
« on: June 14, 2017, 02:31:12 pm »
Smugglers has no luck whatsoever to it, not sure what you're talking about here.

You can draw it after your opponent's E/E/E/C/C hand or you can draw it after their $5 hand.

Every single card in Dominion has luck when you consider the luck of drawing it at the wrong vs right time. Smugglers probably feels different because wrong or right time is dependent upon what your opponent did last turn rather than what other cards you draw with it. But still, cards like Vassal, Wishing Well, Mystic, Herald, Lookout, etc; have luck in regards to what happens when you play them, which is different.

*Edit* It's not fundamentally different, really. Vassal's luck is also just "when did you draw it"... did you draw it when you had an action on top or not? But it matters that you don't find out if you're lucky under after you play the card, since playing the card is expensive (costs an action). With Smugglers, if you draw it at a bad time (when your opponent didn't buy anything you want), you can just choose to not play it and play a better terminal instead. But with Vassal, you have to make a decision without all the information. So it's not so much about luck vs not, but about how much information you have/need before making a decision.

I'm not saying that the other cards don't have luck, it just seems like more of a blind kind of luck with tournament and, admittedly to a lesser degree, with vassal and smugglers too.  Obviously you can get horrible shuffle luck on any board, no matter how good you are, but with Vassal, there just seems to be more of an element that is out of our control.

Of course, this is just my opinion.  I just don't love how vassal works

Usually, I'm not a huge fan of Vassal.  If there are cards in the kingdom that work well with it like pearl diver, herald, secret passage, cartographer, etc, then I think it is really fun and great, but usually that isn't the case (At least when I've played with it). To me it has a little bit too much of a luck factor, like smugglers or tournament.  Of course, you can use strategy to make any of these cards a smart buy, but it seems to me like it is based on luck too often.
Some people like that stuff, I just don't.

Rules Questions / Band of Misfits +Card Token
« on: June 06, 2017, 01:05:02 pm »
Hey guys, This may have been asked before, but I couldn't find an answer for this specific question.  Sorry if I'm repeating.
Anyway, if I have my +card token on BoM do I get to draw that card before I choose what BoM will be played as? It could definitely affect my decision if that is the case.

The card is great, but the poor butcher's head is pretty strange.

Rules Questions / Re: Storyteller...?

I must be missing something here... What does the alternative interpretation of Trader do that is different? I'm not seeing the ambiguity...

Whether Trader "interrupts the gaining process" to replace the card with a Silver, or cancels the whole gaining process and creates a new one.
This came up with the question Ironworks + Trader, although it's also implied in the rulebook (since it says that the Silver will come from supply and go to your discard pile no matter what the other card was gonna do). If Trader just replaced the Silver, Ironworks would get you +$1 and there would be no question about what "it" refers to.

Hmm, alright. But I think Ironworks would fail to give you a bonus with either interpretation of Trader. There would still be a question of whether "it" refers to the card Ironworks originally tried to gain (and didn't) or whatever card was ultimately gained.

Ironworks aside, the issue also came up originally with Torturer. If you use Trader to get a Silver instead of a Curse, that Silver goes to your discard pile. If Torturer only replaces the card that you were gaining, a supposed to replacing the gain itself with a different event (also a gain), then th Silver would go to your hand.

So where does the silver end up? It's quite possible I've been playing trader wrong.

I just had a really fun game with secret passage.  We had Secret Passage, Courtier, Legionary, Enchantress, Vagrant, Castles, squire, forager, baron, and wild hunt.  It made for tons of fun possibilities.  Use courtier and always get it with you enchantress, or use wild hunt and easily pair up your gained estates with barons, easily set up your legionaries with golds, or simply turn your vagrants all into laboratories.  That was easily one of the most fun games I've had in a while.

Plus I just have a crush on Castles and I think they make every game more fun.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Landmarks: Tomb
« on: April 13, 2017, 11:35:44 am »
I like to set up kingdoms where tomb makes a normally bad card/strategy a little better.  For example, I had fun with tomb and develop, with no other trashing.  Still a bad card, but if it is the only trasher in the kingdom and tomb is on the board, it is interesting. It makes you try out stuff you normally wouldn't.  Same with rats, mine, or several others mediocre trashers

I've found it very helpful in a couple attack heavy games where we both got tons of junk in our deck with no trashing.  The coin tokens were a great way to actually get up to 5+ eventually. As with all of the other cards, it definitely has its moments
