Last stand:
Trash a card. If you do play it two (three?) times.

Usually worse than throne room/kings court. But sometimes you would want the card gone. Maybe if it worked in treasure too...

Ed

Would totally use this on Moneylender.

Sages LOVE to shop. Markets, Grand Markets, Black Markets, Bazaars, Hagglers; they'll stop for them all.

Did I mention gay?

How about cards that make you perform a physical action?

Marathon
Action - $3
Run a mile.  If you do so in under 5 minutes, gain 2 Provinces.

Get Off Your Ass
Action - $2
Do 60 jumping jacks.  If you do, gain a Gold, putting it in your hand.

Tongue Twister
Action - $1
Say "Search and Seizure" five times fast.  If successful, you win.

7105
Doublejack with Feodum becomes crazy.  The most expensive card that needs to be bought is 4 coins.  From the second reshuffle every hand can be buying a feodum. On the off chance that you have too many feodums and not enough silvers, use a Jack to trash one of them to improve the rest.

The same principle applies to Gardens (and to a lesser extent, Silk Road) games.

I was curious about how he said shelters games would only have one Victory Card pile (I'm assuming not counting random kingdom cards).  Any predictions on how that will play out?

It's not one Victory pile - the Estates, Duchies and Provinces will still be there.  You just don't start with Estates in your deck - you start with these Shelters instead.  And there aren't any piles for the Shelters - they're not from the supply.  You only have the ones you start with.

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: How will they fit?
« on: August 11, 2012, 03:17:32 pm »
The real question is whether the base cards will have a place in the box like with the other large expansions. I really like that feature because I'm a bad person and sometimes I like playing just prosperity and alchemy.

Oh, there's no way in hell those will fit.

Knowing that iso has tested Dark Ages, I'm curious as to what the stand-in pictures were for Rats, Hermit, Pillage, etc.

Can someone tell me why Overgrown Estate is a Victory card if it does not give you any VP's By that logic, all cards could be X-Victory with it granting 0 VP's. Suddenly, Scout and Tribute are incredible! Crossroads is the new Madman!

Or... Overgrown Estate should just be Shelter.

You forgot about Silk Road and Transmute.

Hold the phone... what happens when you Transmute a Great Hall?  Do you get a Duchy and a Gold?

Some Cornucopia-and-Dark-Ages-only kingdoms seem like they could be quite fun!

I suppose with Fairgrounds on the board you'll have an interesting decision to make from the very start.  Do you trash your starting Hovel and Overgrown Estate or keep them for more Fairgrounds variety?  Because without a Supply pile for them, once you trash a Shelter, there's no going back!!!  Well, unless there's another gain-from-trash-er that can gain cards costing as low as (1).

Hmmm...7 basic Supply cards (VP, Treasure, Curse) plus 10 Kingdom cards plus 3 Shelters is exactly 20!  You could get 8-point Fairgrounds without the aid of Colonies, Potions, Young Witch, or Black Market!  And it might give another reason for buying a Curse, aside from piling out or Ambassador.  (I'm assuming we still play with those purple cards in Dark Ages and that Ruins don't replace the Curse pile...?)

I'm hoping we see a traditional Curser along with these new-fangled Looters.

Dominion contains 500 cards. Dark Ages contains 500 cards. I reckon it'll fit fine.

But most of them are shoved together in larger piles, like Coppers and Curses.  There will be a lot more spaces between piles.

So, not to say I've lost faith in Donald X (far from it), but I'm very curious as to how all the Dark Ages cards are going to fit in their box.  I was playing IRL Dominion last night, and looking at the box, I find myself skeptical that even taking out the Curses, Base Victories and Base Treasures, that the box will be able to contain 10 more kingdom cards, 2 upgrade stacks, a Spoils pile, a Ruins pile, and Shelters.  Oh, and extra space for all those Rats.

I wouldn't have an issue with it if it followed the current rule of "Slowest speed takes priority." So no animations is highest speed, but if someone has animations on then you have to wait for animations. It's annoying I admit, but it's probably the only way to work it in while keeping animations for people who like them.

What would be nice would be a feature that auto-matches you to someone with the same preferred animation speed setting.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

IT JUST DAWNED ON ME

SHELTERS PROTECT YOU FROM LOOTERS

i.e.

Shelter
Victory-Reaction
$2
0 VP

When another player plays a Looter card, you may reveal this from your hand.  If you do, you are unaffected by that Looter.

Lol......he currently has +9 for a false statement!  Wish I could do that....

It was a guess that seemed right at the time.  :P

I've seen Baron a million times, but it just dawned on me...he looks just like The Most Interesting Man in the World.

EDIT: Werewothegreat, where'd you get that blown-up image?

I blew it up myself.

It's probably worth mentioning that Donald probably previewed the most game-defining DA cards.  Certainly all the weird things we knew about (Ruins, Shelters, self-upgrading cards, cards interacting with the trash, cards with on-trash abilities) are accounted for, and then some other weird things as well ($1-cost card, targeted discard, self-perpetuating card).  I recall this being roughly the case with Hinterlands too:  the previewed cards were things like Mandarin, Border Village, and Trader, rather than Cartographer, Oasis, and such.

Which is not to understate how dramatically Dark Ages has obviously already rocked the world of Dominion.  But I doubt the remaining unrevealed cards with average the same degree of distinctiveness as the previewed cards.

Also remember that Haggler, Jack of all Trades, Silk Road and Scheme were NOT previewed.

I'm not really sure what the point is, but Haggler didn't need showing off with Border Village representing that kind of mechanic.  Jack isn't anything to look at; it takes actual play to figure that one out.  Silk Road is a Gardens variant.  Scheme, on the other hand, does introduce a brand new game-changing mechanic that the previews hadn't covered, but I didn't rule out unpreviewed cards being game-changing -- only that the selection of cards previewed would be ones particularly worth showing off.

Also remember that Donald had planned for a couple more days of previews than actually happened. When the entire list was spoiled; he stopped the previews.

Those would have been Tunnel and Inn, and he released the text he would have accompanied them with.

So I think there are 3 things that it really NEEDS that aren't in the beta right now (tons and tons of things I WANT). One is the rulebook(s). Another is some kind of tutorial which shows you how to do stuff on the site. I am willing to accept that they have this stuff, and it's not in the beta (probably it's in the 'adventure mode' that we've seen none of but we know is coming).

But the third thing is the crashing and the connectivity issues, and I really really don't see why they would assume that that is fixed without testing that outside their controlled environment. And as of yesterday, anyway, that was not fixed.

Maybe it's just your machine/browser.  Goko has only ever crashed for me... I think maybe once?  If that.  And that was probably because my internet connection died.  By the way, the AIs have been getting much more challenging.

Given who they were getting for beta testers, I'm not surprised they didn't show us a tutorial.  But I would be very surprised if they released officially without one.  Then you get lots of people going "What is this I don't even" and never coming back.

7119
If Poor House and Squire are on the board (even without an Attack), I'd be comfortable opening Remake with Shelters in my deck.

7121
There is some precedent for this.  While Prosperity cards make no mention of Platinums/Colonies, Apprentice does specifically state what to do with Potions in a cost, which has absolutely no use unless there are Potion cards on the board, which Apprentice is not one.  So it's an expansion specific effect for a card that doesn't have an expansion specific type/cost.
But how could you defend an attack with a card you might not even be using to play with?

How do you defend against an attack if there are no defense cards in the kingdom? You bend over and take it, just like if you don't have Shelters in play.

I'm talking about an Attack that specifically says "Reveal a Shelter card from your hand, if you don't ______"

That card would be dominant on a Board that disallows Shelters.

Couldn't you make the case that "Overgrown Estate" is an "Estate" and therefore should work with Baron?

That's actually a really good idea! I wonder if Donald make a ruling in the rulebook that allowed that.

But even if he did, the likelihood of drawing an Overgrown Estate and a Baron together is very thin.

I think it's a terrible idea... can I also play Wishing Well, name "Market", and then reveal and draw Grand Market? Can I play Bag of Gold and gain a Fool's Gold on my deck?

But Wishing Well says "Name a card" and so if you name Market, the card you draw either is or is the card "Market" - whether it's a Market is irrelevant. Baron says (IIRC) an Estate, not an Estate card. An Overgrown Estate is clearly an Estate.

Donald is very careful with his wording  ;)

Baron says "Estate card."

What I'm hoping is that purchasing a physical copy of Dark Ages will give me access to Dark Ages cards on Goko.  I'm further hoping that I won't need an iPhone in order to do that.

7123
I do like how with all these post-apocalyptic versions of older cards, they've gotten the original artists to come back.  Ruined Market has the same artist as Grand Market, Pillage has the same artist as Village, and Overgrown Estate has the same artist as the full-card art from the Estate in the Base Cards set.

7124
The problem with ranking the $6+ cards is that most of them are board dependent.  Bank, Adventurer, Farmland, Fairgrounds, etc can all shine, given the right board, but they're not necessarily consistent, and they're not usually a must buy.  The top 4 I agree with - Border Village is still situational, but it makes engines in general so much easier to build.  Grand Market, Goons and King's Court I'd really put on a level with each other.  Unlike the rest, they're usually not situational, and can shine on any board, though they're all best with each other.  Grand Market just becomes a powerhouse, though I agree with it at #3 because of the tricky cost.  But for Goons and King's Court, as has been mentioned above, they're both awesome for different reasons, so it's hard to really place one above the other.

7125
I still think it's possible that shelters give blanket protection against looters. It would make some thematic sense. If your kingdom consists of a ghost town, an abandoned mansion, and a straw hut, there's really nothing to loot.

It would make Hovel in particular make some more sense, not just because Hovel is weak, but also because it gives you a reason to maybe hold onto it, even through the endgame.

I bet at the very least there's one attack that says "Each other player [does some bad thing] or reveals a shelter." or something to that affect.
