This is my first week as a gold subscriber.
Today I opened Steward/Baron then wrote "ah damn - shelters' into the chat

So you do. My bad :p

Worth mentioning that attacks (particularly discard attacks) are a very good boost to the power of a draw engine. One reason is that the drawing player can play their attacks more frequently as their deck cycles more quickly. Another is that a draw engine player is much less heavily hit by a discard attack before they start their turn than is a money-based player. Attacks also prolong the game generally, thus giving the draw engine player more time to set up and get going. That last point is also why alt-VP and victory token options favour draw engines. They will prolong the game, helping the slower-starting but late-charging draw engine. A route to victory that avoids buying provinces at all is also basically an auto-win for a draw engine against anyone playing a money strategy, because any money deck is dead as a door by the time it's nearly managed to deplete the province pile with no help from the engine player catching up.

The first time I ever saw Wild Hunt I didn't really read it properly and thought it looked super-weak and basically only useful if you fancied a $5 smithy (which isn't never). A savagely fast-starting BM option was on the board (can't remember what, but Jack or Embassy or one of the real humdingers) and I got to a 39-0 lead (6 Province buys) fairly quickly and then my opponent finally got his ludicrously complicated Wild Hunt / Royal Carriage / Crown / Upgrade / God Knows What Else / Some Mad Event I Hadn't Seen Before (he pretty much purchased every card on the board to make it work - this was a very non-obvious engine) strategy to fire off properly and he just raked in the VP tokens every turn while I just drew a load of nice $7 hands and punched the desk. I got one more province after a few turns which put the scare in him slightly and he played his ludicrous engine very slowly and carefully (for some reason he had to keep buying junk and trashing it each turn and it was all very impressive) while I just caught up on some emails and rolled in for my 2-second turns every few minutes, and he won comfortably. It was a stunning comeback but, to be fair, he was never actually behind. I may have been nearly 40 points up but failure was basically built into my strategy from the start by the presence of Wild Hunt.

I don't like your idea and still like mine.

But what if your opponent bans Mine?

This is the first comment I have ever upvoted

Dominion General Discussion / Banning 5 Cards
« on: August 26, 2017, 11:17:13 am »
Donald X recently said he'd appreciate a system where each player can ban up to 5 kingdom cards and still play rated games where the union of the two sets of banned card is banned.

1 - Is this a good idea?
2- What would you ban?

I think it's probably a good idea, and I'd ban the following:

Rebuild
Governor
King's Court
Embassy
Tournament

That's me all done for S21, and with 17 points it's been by far my most successful (above parity for the first time :D)

However it's now summertime in the UK and I'll be switching from competitive dominion to competitive tennis until the nights draw in again.

So I'll not be playing S22, but see you guys again later in the year for some more action in a few seasons' time :)

Rules Questions / Re: Replace/Trader
« on: April 07, 2017, 01:04:47 pm »
I decided my explanation wasn't very clear - so here's an edited version:

So I was playing online the other day and played a replace with a trader in my hand. I trashed a copper to gain an estate, then used trader to gain a silver instead. My opponent still got a curse (though they trashed it with watchtower so it made very little actual difference to the game) and I can't remember if the silver was topdecked.

According to my interpretation of the famous "Blue Dog Rule" (and my interpretation is probably what's at fault here), this is wrong.

AFAIK, the BDR was formulated for Ironworks/Trader, and the upshot there is that, if you gain, say, and action, with Ironworks but use Trader to switch it to a silver, then you get neither +1 action nor +$1, because the Ironworks didn't actually gain you anything, instead Trader gained you silver. So, my reasoning for Replace is the same: Replace tried to gain me an Estate (thus triggering a cursing) but failed, and Trader gained me a silver instead, so Replace failed to gain an estate and shouldn't curse, just like Ironworks would fail to gain, say, a Menagerie, and thus shouldn't give +1 action in the same situation. Since it was Trader, not Replace, that gained me that silver, then it shouldn't even go on top of my deck, just like if I wouldn't get +$1 if this happened with Ironworks/Trader.

But the coding on ShuffleIT clearly disagrees with me here, so can somebody tell me why?

I'm in to return for next season (though I've not quite finished S20, LuciferousPeridot and I have had to delay our match slightly due to life issues). AFAIK I'm still in with an outside shot of winning D3 if I thrash LP (though I don't anticipate it), so maybe I'll end up in C?

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: A user report feature?
« on: February 28, 2017, 02:25:55 pm »
Wanna bump this back up after having another very unenjoyable game due not to slowplay but due to constant chat abuse.

Gotta have a feature like this at some point soon. Pretty much every online game I can think of has such a system, and on MF dominion you could message customer support and they did take it seriously. I can shrug off chat abuse (though slowplaying really gets on my nerves) but some people can't that easily, and we want dominion online to be an accessible and safe community for people.

And, I know several of you above have said name-and-shame is the wrong approach, but, hell, I think it's the right approach as long as there's no official channel, so "dominion cartel", you are named as engaging in abusive chat. Enjoy.

Still GMT (any chance of being in a group with some Europeans next time? Everyone keeps being in the US and scheduling is a pain)

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / A user report feature?
« on: January 10, 2017, 08:46:56 am »
Hi

Anyone know if there's a user report feature? For the first time on the new client today I had someone slow-play me (wait the maximum wait time between each click of a button in order to attempt to bore me into resigning) when they were too far behind to have a reasonable chance of winning. It happened to me twice on MF and there was somewhere you could go (though I don't remember where now because it was ages) to report abusive play. Is there anywhere I can do that on ShuffleIT, or there a plan for there to be such a place in future?

The account name is "Fat and Furious". Kick that asshole from your tables unless you want to be staring at a screen for half an hour doing nothing while they play 1 card per minute. Eventually they either got bored or messed up and waited too long because I was able to force resign but still, it was a waste of some considerable time.
