When you gain a Border Village, you may gain a card costing less than it. Curse costs less than it.  ;)

A super-quick game, in which I buy 6 Hamlets on the last turn for the win.

Do note that there are plenty of other instances of cards not being discarded during cleanup, and indeed which cards will be discarded not being determined until later, e.g. Treasury, Alchemist, any Schemed card (if I play multiple Schemes), any treasure you might choose with Herbalist.

This just made me realize that the current implementation is NOT correct with the actual cards! If you play 2 Schemes and a Woodcutter, you should be able to choose that Woodcutter twice, once for each Scheme. But you can't!

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Can you score exponentially many points ?
« on: November 10, 2011, 10:46:13 am »
You don't need more cards in play to score an infinite amount of points (more precisely, to continue accumulating point indefinitely): village, goons, ambassador(return two copper), buy two copper. Repeat. Obviously you can ramp this combo up to gain more points per turn, but this simple combo can continue gaining VP forever.

Monument -> Buy nothing does the same; and simpler. ;)

Dominion General Discussion / First player advantage; was Donald mistaken?
« on: November 08, 2011, 02:48:34 pm »
Donald comments on first player advantage here: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=91.0. His comments seemed to make sense at first, but since reading that, I've read several other posts in other threads that talk about how much of an advantage going first is. The place where it seems to matter the most is when cursing or Ambassador is available; because the second player will have a curse shuffled in on his first shuffle far more often than the first player will; when both players have identical openings. A few questions:

  • What are the CouncilRoom statistics on this? Can it show a percentage of all games that were won by player 1?
  • Are there other factors aside from early cursing/Ambassador that give player 1 an advantage?

Also, it seems to me that the first player getting an additional turn should happen about half of the time in 2-player games, which means that this is a bit more than just a "potential" advantage... it's an advantage half of the time, which isn't insignificant. Can CouncilRoom show data on how often the first player got more turns than the second player? Is there a reason why it shouldn't be about half of the time? The only reason I can think of that it might not be is that if both players play essentially equally, then player 2 should be able to buy a Province each time player 1 buys a Province; which would cause the game to end after each player has had the same number of turns.

1. I'm happy to wait for people to assess the board. I get a little rushed and sloppy myself sometimes, so I could probably stand to do this more.

At least twice I've made my opening buys after a quick look at the board; having seen 2 cards that I like as an opener; and not even noticing that Chapel was available!

Dominion General Discussion / Re: What cards are still unique?
« on: November 02, 2011, 04:52:45 pm »
Here's another way to make the point:

Claim 1: "Coppersmith is the only card that changes the effect of playing another card."

Claim 2: "Copper changes the effect of playing Bank."

One of these claims must be wrong (or at least incomplete). You tell me which one.

I think Claim 2 is wrong. The issue here isn't a question of the semantics of what it means to "affect" another card, the issue is that there are 2 possible definitions of the word "effect." The OP meant the specific Dominion-related definition of "the steps you take when you play a card." There is also a more general definition of "effect," which is more like "the net result of playing a card." In the second definition, yes, copper changes the effect of playing Bank.

However, looking at "effect" as "steps you preform when you play a card," then when you play a Bank, you preform the same steps, no matter what treasure has been played: count how many treasures are in play, and get that many coins.

But the effect of playing Copper has actually changed. If you've played a Coppersmith, you cannot preform the steps listed on the Copper card, which is "get 1 coin." That step is gone, you now preform a new step instead, which is "get 2 coins."

*Edit* rinkworks seems to have said the same basic thing...

Tribute is the only card that can affect another player's deck without attacking (thought I guess you could argue that possession does too...).

I think you'd definitely have to count Possession, but even more so, Ill-Gotten-Gains.

Of course it's a puzzle - the question is: How stupid is the author to put this in the wrong subforum?
lol, I was all set to reply with something like "no need to be so mean or harsh about it!" before I noticed who posted this...

Rules Questions / Re: Ironworks + Trader

I love the fact that someone thought of a question so confusing (though not involving some never-will-happen situation that requires a specific 5 cards to be on the board or anything) that the creator of the game himself had to change his mind after giving his original answer!

So the story goes, it was too powerful to be a Kingdom card. What I would like to do is try play-testing it as a Kingdom card with this adjustment:

Crown
Cost: $2, 1 Potion
Worth $2.
When you play this, +$1 per unused Action you have (Action, not Action card).
----------------------------
This costs $2 more for each Kingdom card in the supply at the start of the game that can give more than 1 Action.
TYPE: TREASURE

The "can give" phrasing makes sure Hamlet and Crossroads count.

I don't see much of a reason to have it cost more for each pile of kingdom cards that can give more than 1 action. look at a kingdom with Nobles, Bazaar, Festival, and City, vs a kingdom with Crossroads and Fishing Village. Doesn't seem right that Crown should cost more in the first Kingdom than the second. The number of piles that have +2 actions doesn't necessarily relate to how easy it will be to get a bunch of +2 action cards.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Think outside the box: what's missing?

Thanks!

I became so focused on how everyone was talking about the name of the card itself; that I never thought to combine both the name and something about the card in Dominion itself. I'm pretty sure I never would have gotten that!

Ok, apparently I really suck at these, because I don't think I've figured out a single one yet. What's the connection?

I play on the iPad a fair amount; haven't gotten iOS 5 yet but glad to hear that it helps some!

Reordering is something that would have to be done by Dougz. Hey Dougz, if that's something you'd like to do, I can tell you it's definitely possible. I built a website that uses a lot of JQuery dragging and dropping, and we needed it to work on the iPad. We found third party JQuery libraries that allowed it to work. I don't know anything about what sort of technologies you're using for Isotropic, though.

General Discussion / Game: Dominion sentences
« on: October 19, 2011, 01:55:32 pm »
I thought of this from another thread about Dominion affecting real life, when someone mentioned working at the Duke University Library. Come up with realistic-sounding sentences that use as many Dominion card names as you can.

I drove my Ford Explorer to the Bank to see if I could get a Loan from a Moneylender, but it turned out that my Estate wasn't enough to qualify.
