Dominion General Discussion / Re: herald is so good
« on: December 03, 2013, 08:28:20 am »
It's always a cantrip in that it draws you another card.

Sometimes it's a Peddler that discards a Copper (making it even better than Peddler).
Sometimes it's a Lab that discards an Estate (making it even better than Lab).
Sometimes it's a simple Village.
And sometimes it's just a Great Hall.

But it's generally always good.

Man I skipped right to this page, so naturally assumed you were talking about Herald, and spent several minutes trying to figure out what sort of card interactions could possibly cause it to work the way you suggest.

Depends on the Kingdom, but with Upgrade in play, I'd slightly prefer gaining Scout over nothing at all.

Agreed, Scout is only terrible if you consider that when you bought it, you could have bought any other $3 or $4 instead. But a free Scout is generally a benefit, not something you'd want to get rid of.

How much does the +3 cards cost? Such a card would definitely change things... But still, why purchase a vp card when you can just build a railroad on a bonus square for the same or more points (and less waste and money)?

7055
on the subject of stonemason + quarry interactions
buying Stonemason with Quarry + 3 coppers (Or stonemason from Quarry, silver and a copper) is 2 grand markets
mostly fun because it lets you get around the copper restriction AND gets you two grand markets with cards you can buy on your first 2 turns.

Neat, because you use the benefit from a single quarry twice. First because you are overpaying more than normal, then because GM is cheaper than normal. So normally you would need to pay $8 for Stonemason to get GM, but quarry basically reduces it twice to $4.

So I just learned Trains at BGG.con. I like it a lot (only played 1 game). I'm almost sure that you can't just ignore the board and "play Dominion" instead. The best vp card is 8 coins for 4 points, and vp cards  come with a confusion. The board gives you anywhere from 2 to 8 points for little to no coins (and a confusion).

Anyway, Dominion skills do help a lot and I proved that in my game. 4 player game, the others were all basically buying stuff that helps trash confusions, and expanding on the board fast. I opened Silver/Silver, and went into Laboratories, Gold, and Cellars. When my opponents all had expanded all over the board, with about 20 points each, I had 0 points. And they weren't getting too bogged down in waste either, they were trashing as they went (but most turns that they trashed were otherwise useless turns).

Anyway, I got 9 out of the 10 Labs, and then went heavy on the board. I thought that I would be able to use my engine to trash a lot of waste and keep my deck going, but that didn't work at all. My deck was too large and I couldn't line up the waste with my trashers. But it didn't matter. I quickly caught up, and then ended the game with about 36 points to the second place score of about 30.

So yeah, go Dominion knowledge. It's cool because I had no clue if it would work in this game or not, but my guess was right. I'm assuming the general right way to play is similar to what I did, but waiting less time before going after the board (because there aren't really "draw your deck" engines).

I played it twice and didn't like it all.
Like many deckbuilders, it lacks the the thing that makes Dominion so fun: The possibility of huge card combos that let you cool stuff with your hand. You just draw your hand and play those cards, maybe drawing a few more cards in the process. But you can't do something like Village-Smithy-Village-Smithy.
Also, I don't really like the board mechanism that let's you reap the fruit of other's buildings. Plus I feel the starting position might be to important.
Furthermore, I feel lots of the cards are too close to cards from Dominion. I mean they have 2 coins for $3, 3 coins for $6, Wishing Well for $3, Lab for $5 (minus nonexistant actions). I mean I don't have anything against games using Dominion's deckbuilding mechanics, but straight up copying cards?

So it's really a moat for $5?

No! It's a Laboratory for $5. Since you have unlimited actions, then it's like every card has +1 action automatically.

Author's commentary on Landlord:

Quote
Landlord
Types: Action – Victory
Cost: $5
+2 Cards. You may discard a Victory card. If you do, +1 Action.

Worth 1 VP per empty Supply pile.

Quote
The top half is very generic. Basically I thought the concept of a Victory card that filters itself would be a cool concept. I thought a Lab variant suited it well, although it looks a bit boring, it gets the job done. To make it a bit more "fancy," I attached the VP for empty Supply piles. I thought it would be an interesting enough mechanic that brought something new to the table, but kept the simplicity of a beginner set. I think it'd be awesome for someone to try to empty more than three piles to rank up points, and the reason Landlord doesn't have a "+Buy" is so you need supporting cards to make that happen. I know others are turned off by the possible empty 4-6 of the piles, but I don't think it would happen often enough for it to be an issue. Like (I believe) someone said earlier about Beggar/Gardens or Trader/Feodum. I don't think City/Candlestick Maker/Landlord would come up often enough for it to matter. After all, every card has power that is (at least somewhat) board dependent.

I'm awful with pricing cards. I'm starting to wonder if Landlord would actually be worth $4. Gardens usually end up being a cheap Duchy for someone going for Provinces, so maybe that would be a fairer price for Landlord. Anyway, either way, (like any author) I am proud of my card: I enjoy its self-synergy, its simplicity, how it fits in the theme of Intrigue, its new way of earning VP, how in the end of the game each Landlord is the same VP for everyone, and that it is a Hybrid-Victory card which filters.

So this has probably been discussed and I just haven't seen it, but if Landlord wins, and turns out to be at all too weak, I would highly support giving it +1 buy. I think it would be neat in terms of giving itself a possibility of a 4-pile ending, even though it would still be rare.

Granted, always drawing Lab/BV together is better than having them mixed in randomly...

I'm not sure of this. If my Lab/BV are together in one part of my deck, and my  good terminals happen to be in another, then Lab/BV is just Lab. Now allow Lab and BV to be spread out, you have a better chance of at least 1 of the 2 cards being near your good terminals, with less chance that they both will be. Depending on all sorts of factors, I could see preferring to have a 66% chance that I'll get at least one of them at a certain part in my deck, with only a 33% chance that I'll get both of them; to having a 50% chance that I'll either get both or none.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Oh Goko...

Similar to what Dsell said, but this really pisses me off: "It learned the hard way that HTML5 just wasn't ready to scale as a high-performance game platform."

That's just terrible. Really bad reporting there.

First off, Dominion is hardly a "high-performance game." It's not like they were trying to make World of Warcraft in HTML5 or something.

Second, Goko barely uses anything at all about how HTML5 is supposed to work. So they use the canvas element to draw all their graphics. That doesn't mean it's an HTML5 platform. HTML5 is a huge set of elements and APIs designed to work with your browser to make an interactive web application.

Third, even to the degree that they do use HTML5, none of the problems with the website have anything to do with the platform they chose. Bugs, lack of security, lack of features, ignoring their customers, poor choices on UI implementation, etc... there is no reason at all to think that all of those same things wouldn't have existed had they chosen any other platform.

Ideally a new Prize card will be sufficiently different from existing Prize cards.

I'm sure some (or maybe most) will disagree with me on this. As I am trying to brainstorm ideas for a Prize card, I'd like that to rule out the following:
Gold Gainer (Or even just Gainer) Prize ---- Bag of Gold
Treasure Card (Or benefit extra actions) Prize ---- Diadem
Attack Card Prize ---- Followers
Cost Reducer Prize ---- Princess
Vanilla Bonuses Prize ---- Trusty Steed

I wouldn't totally taboo treasure and attacks, but the need to be way different, very interesting, and stand up to the standard of Followers and Diadem.

I definitely wouldn't agree with the no attacks or no treasure things... it seems just as reasonable to say "no non-attack actions; we already have 3 prizes that do that" as it does to say "no attack actions; we already have 1 prize that does that." Every action card needs to be chosen whether it's going to be an attack or not; I don't think of non-attack as the default. (Though of course you don't want the game to be mostly attacks; but 2 out of 6 cards being attacks doesn't seem like overkill at all).

7066
A case could be made for princess over steed. Sure, steed is always solid, but it's also grossly overused. Princess is just so so so good when it's good.

Agreed. That one was a tough call. I went for Trusty Steed because of the versatility; I think as a whole there's more boards where it's useful. But Princess is indeed way MORE useful when it is.

7067
Where are the 2013 1st Ed. rankings for Prizes?  I found everything else but the prize cards.
I'm sorry to post here, I've looked everywhere.

Followers
Trusty Steed
Princess
Bag of Gold
Diadem

There, they've been ranked. ;D

Prefecture is a Victory card, so if you draw 1 card of your choice and a Victory card, it's possible that you get to draw a card of your choice and another Prefecture, which isn't that bad if you have the action to play the other Prefecture.

True, but..
1) You need multiple actions as you mention; not just 1 extra, but 3 extra if you want the 2 cards of your choice to be Actions. That's a lot of Villages needed.
You can choose a village, too.

Although if you do (choose regular Village); you've accomplished very little. Turn would have to look like this:

1. Play Village (5 cards in hand, 2 actions)
2. Play Prefecture. Reveal some cards including Village and Prefecture. Put those 2 into hand. (6 cards in hand, 1 action)
3. Play Village (6 cards in hand, 2 actions)
4. Play Prefecture. Reveal some cards, put Victory card and whatever you want in hand. (7 cards in hand, but at least 1 is a VP, so 6 other cards,  1 action)

Net result... it's kinda like you just played a Laboratory.

I feel like I'm missing something here... hasn't it been agreed that the tutor concept is quite strong? I don't see how this card is being talked about at $2 or $3; what is this offering that previous tutors have missed? The shuffling afterwards doesn't matter much except for preventing certain combos with Wishing Well and such. And yes, it can sometimes miss due to being near the end of the shuffle, but that just makes it a bit swingier. On average, it will look through half of your deck.

Compare with this popular card from the last contest:

Prefecture
Types: Action – Victory
Cost: $5
Reveal cards from your deck until you reveal a Victory card. If you do, put it and one other revealed card into your hand. Discard the rest.
Worth 2 VP.

Not sure how much the tacking on of 2VP is worth, but can't be a whole lot since Tunnel is a $3 card. And although Prefecture technically gets you 2 cards, 1 of them is always a Victory, so it may as well just draw you 1 card of your choice (except some possible Combos). And this is terminal! It seems to me that Tutor is on average a stronger card than Prefecture. The fact of being non-terminal is a HUGE boost. It changes Moat from a weak $2 to a good $5. So I would think you would start testing Tutor at $5, but even then...

I think this is how you should do it (I happened to have a deck of MtG cards nearby, so I used that to demonstrate the point):

That's basically what I was suggesting.

Rules Questions / Re: Top card of your discard pile after Chancellor.

Maybe you should just put your deck into your discard pile, face down, no flip.

That, or you have to keep the order of your discard the same as the order of your deck. Meaning you have to move 1 card at a time.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Ghost Village + Action token
« on: November 06, 2013, 11:39:54 pm »
I think $4, and not based on thinking if it's better than village or not. The thing is that when you want this, you want a lot of this, more so than with village I think (except for BM decks, in which case it doesn't matter anyway. The only real difference between 3 and 4 usually is how hard it is to get 2 or maybe even 3 on a single turn. I just think that 3 makes it a little too easy to get a whole bunch if these.

So if this allowed you to turn in a token for an action at any time during your turn, would it maybe be a $5? I wonder if that would be a more insteresting card, because as it is, there's a fair amount of swingyness in which you might turn in a few tokens before playing smithy, and then get screwed on here draw.
