Dominion: Empires Previews / Re: Qvist Rankings and Empires
« on: June 10, 2016, 01:47:41 pm »
I like the idea of power rankings. In the absence of a nice web-based database, just throw it into a table on the wiki and include costs as a column. Then they should be sortable by cost or power ranking.

My preference is a 10 point scale with 2 decimal points.

If LF got it, surely some stores did too. Start calling your FLGSs.

I could be wrong, but I believe RGG ships to distributors, and the distributors ship to stores.  Also I believe the distributors are not to start shipping until Wednesday.

You're right. I misunderstood.

The problem with Vampires is that you're not forced to play the negative costing cards, so they're basically Confusciouses that can be drawn by Scrying Pool.

I don't see that as a problem. That's sort of the point. They're junk, but you can't trash them in conventional ways. The card itself gives you a way to get rid of it, but that's not required. I assume that Confusions could be trashed, no?

There are also rule clarifications: If you trash a Grave with Salvager, do you lose four coins?

If there is a way to interpret the negative cost in a way that works, I say go ahead. Sure, Salvager gives negative coin. Maybe you could Bridge first and reset them to 0?

Hey, sorted piles ... like Castles

Dominate isn't subject to cost reduction like other cards either, so it's even harder to get than a hypothetical $14 Victory card that gives 15vp.

Now that previews are (mostly) over, can you talk about the number of each denomination of VP tokens or whether or not there are any other kinds of tokens?

Keep sort of already seems to me to have a bidding flavor to it. There's a pool of VP that you're bidding for by buying Treasure cards. If you bid the most, you get the VP.

I'm guessing the same as what happens when you play Gladiator and your hand is empty.  If your neighbor's deck is empty, you get the + and +1.  However, if yours is empty, and your neighbor's isn't, you get nothing.
That suggests "no card" is cheaper than zero-cost cards, so you could win a Chariot Race with a Curse?

Well, it is true that no card is cheaper than a $0 card.   ;)
Not that we've seen anyway. We need an Alt-Curse pile with negative cost.

There was a lot you could do with VP tokens, and I did a lot with them. Nine of the kingdom card piles use them

I hope one of these 9 is a split pile with debt cost.

Nerfing Rebuild with this sounds like fun. I'd maybe put Silk Road on top of it.

Can you say how many of each VP token denomination come with Empires?

Herbalist/Counterfeit? (And other strong $5 treasures  like Relic and Treasure  Trove)

Good idea. Herbalist/Hero might be good too.

Variants and Fan Cards / Split pile variant
« on: May 10, 2016, 03:31:03 pm »
I want to play with some Empires-style split piles made from existing cards, like, I don't know, Pearl Diver and Mystic. I think it works best if you didn't want too many of that top card except it helps you get to the bottom-half, and the synergy is good enough that it pays off. So, what are the best split piles you can think of?

The split-pile mechanic is great, especially on a pile that otherwise was never going to be in danger of running out anyway. Why not make the bottom  half something that synergizes well with the top half? I want to try a variant where you make split piles out of existing cards.

Best. Designed. Card. Ever.

Have you already implemented it in Dom2017?

They have.

It seems like half this forum is playtesters sometimes.  Makes me raspberry jelly.  :(

Amen.  I know they are trying to be helpful, but comments that refer to the knowledge gained in playtesting rub me the wrong way.

Me too. I suggest that when making comments like this in the future, you lie and instead say "so, I just played a bunch of games with this card (using a proxy of course), and here's the insight I gained from actually playing it:"

Maybe this can't be answered yet, but how many debt tokens come with Empires? Do they come in different denominations like VP tokens do?

I seem to remember some discussion in the Variants subforum about a card that returns you to your Action phase...

Yes, it was a heated discussion. I proposed a reaction  village you could play if you drew it dead, which was an idea a lot of people had previously. So people started talking about all these others, one of which returned you to your Action phase, and some other people really really hated the idea of returning to your Action phase. Since Villa happens when you gain it, it may be even easier to do, though (usually) limited in the number of times per game.

Ankenaut, did you just change your avatar to a card which has been out for like, 3 hours?

Heck yeah. A lot of the good Avatars are already taken, and I'm pretty new here, so my plan was to pounce on any good ones from Empires. I really like this guy's look.

There are plenty of great Adventures avatars that I uploaded that have not been taken at all, if you want to go look.

Uploaded where?

Variants and Fan Cards / Capital-like Event
« on: May 09, 2016, 02:03:28 pm »
I was thinking Capital seems like it would work better as an event, so I'm going to propose the obvious debt Event.

Margin
Event, cost $2
Gain an card with $-only cost from an Action supply pile. Take [debt tokens] equal to its cost in $.

I always thought there would be a Capitol card - some kind of really powerful village. I guess Capital makes that unlikely.

I love the idea of taking multiple turns to buy a card. I hope there is an event which allows you to turn another pile into a debt pile.
