Let's Discuss ... / Re: rēs cornūcōpiae consultēmus: hamlet
« on: May 06, 2016, 12:59:59 pm »
The main interaction I've noticed with Adventures is Pathfinding (or Teacher). Hamlet is simply incredible with the +Card token. I might tentatively say that it's the single best card in the game for that token.

Yeah i played a game with hamlet, ambassador, teacher and pathfinding recently. I constantly junked my opponent with a Double ambassador opening and then bought hamlets while upgrading to teacher. With teacher i then Put +$1 on hamlets and bought pathfinding for +card on hamlet. Those were some powered up $2 lab-halfconspirators :D
Unfortunately i cant find the log with the log search.

a couple of remote possibilities:

  • an option to define the nature of your resignation. I often have to end a game to tend to a waking child or something of that sort. If I could mark them as 1)resigned in lieu of loss or conceded, 2) resigned for unrelated reasons and 3) maybe another option, then at the least I could filter them when I search my own game logs. Or, possibly I could see different ratings for different types of games. Obviously, from an official standpoint, they would all count the same, but at least I could see the distinction.
  • somewhat relatedly, maybe there could be an option for aliases. So all my games are rated under Main Name, but I can choose to play under Alias 1 or Alias 2, and they would be rated independently. (Possibly I use one when I'm seriously playing and another when casual). Or maybe just rated and unrated does the trick here

I really need a "playing dominion while intoxicated" alias tbh

There already are My Drunk Account and My Tired Account

For my part, I discovered yesterday that if Page/Peasant is in the Black Market, then the relevant upgrade cards will appear in the kingdom, as per the setup rules, but there will be no way to access them because there is no pile to return the Page/Peasant to to exchange.  How odd!

Sounds like a bug. There is absolutely no reason to include Traveller upgrade cards when there's no way to get them, it just creates confusion.

Well, they put Treasure Map in BM decks which is useless without a second one. You just ignore it in the BM deck but sometimes newbies fall for it.

Edge case: fairgrounds

- "replay" mode for logs, where you can choose a log and get an automated replay of the game for you to watch.

+1 this! Reading logs even with the log prettyfier feels so prehistoric

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Early Adventures Impressions

I really like adventures. I think it adds a lot of complexity to the game and rewards tracking your deck closely even more so with all the "beginning of your turn"-decisions.
Events are also a big factor. They can change a given kingdom from being mediocre to a more interesting one when two are added.
I really like the little Tricks you can pull in adventures games and the more obscure strategies that are enabled by the various + tokens. I had a game where i opened amb/amb and did nothing but junk my opponent while buying hamlets until i had a teacher on turn 8/9 or something. I then Put my +$ token on hamlet and used pathfinding to also Put +card on them. That was fun :D

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Adventures Events: Save
« on: May 03, 2016, 01:26:55 pm »
A nice trick you can pull with save is when eg opening ambassador/ambassador with a 3/4 you can save your T2 estate for T3 to try to get it in Hand with amb + another estate. More generally this applies to all trashers on a 3/4 opening where you dont want a $4 card with your T2 buy.

I know the true skill rating system implemented in the gokosalvager leaderboard is less volatile and therefore better, but i wanted to brag about making it into the top10 for once anyway :P

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Adventures Cards: Port
« on: May 03, 2016, 07:24:01 am »
So after playing a lot of Adventures online for the first day of Dominion Online, I've noticed that this card is apparently a huge trap card for many players. I think at least 3 times I saw different people playing some variant of Port-Big Money, which is obviously awful. Not to say that there aren't many village idiots online, but apparently Port is particularly attractive to them. Maybe it's because it's a new and exciting card that's also easy to understand, and it'll disappear soon. But maybe Port appears significantly more attractive in decks where villages are weak than other villages.

Its because you get 2, so you can play even more villages to get to your other villages faster :D

What do you mean
The two things with Stables aren't things, you should try your best to forget about them.
How many randomized kingdoms really have a good strategy. I've tried all of these (except for Journeyman/FG) and they are actually pretty good.

Almost all of them. Margrave/FG big money is a fine strategy, but Stables/IGG and Stables/Treasure Trove aren't strategies.

Stables/TT gives you a lot of treasure to discard, and gives a treasure density of $2/per card.

Getting a lot of Treasures so that your Stables has Treasures to discard is like buying a lot of Curses so that your Chapel has Curses to trash. The entire purpose of Stables is to skip past the Treasure cards that sometimes you can't avoid having in an engine. You don't want to defeat the purpose by buying more Treasures.

If you discard a treasure, stables give you +3 cards, +1 action, which is way better than Lab. If you always have, say a copper to discard, it provides a pretty huge benefit. With TT, you discard coppers to draw golds.

But unless you've overtrashed (by which I mean, designed a deck that Stables doesn't really fit into), you should always have something to discard to Stables anyway.  If you have so few treasures that you actually need to be getting yourself more treasures in order to play Stables, you probably did something wrong earlier, or else you shouldn't be playing Stables anyway.

Stables+IGG would only be a thing if you didn't have 7 coppers in your deck, but you start with 7 coppers in your deck, so in order for it to work, you'd have to trash a bunch of coppers, then decide you actually want copper again.  Even then it's probably bad, but it's also nonsense to call something a combo if it requires misplaying something else.

Another problem is that stables and igg both cost $5

The most important thing for me would be a good pairing system.

Ideally, you'd like to find an equally skilled opponent within a couple of seconds.
Manually setting all kinds of parameters (like "my rating +/- 500", "these sets, but not these", etc. isn't really helpful.

It would be really cool if we could spectate matches between high level players, maybe seeing all of their cards (although this might be prone to abuse; perhaps players could opt-out of showing their hand cards).

I also think spectating matches would be a really nice feature. A small delay in the stream would probably remove most potential for abuse.

You played that game against me :D i have to say you played it really well, I didnt expect your megaturn to be that powerful. I was hoping to disrupt you a bit with those three knights and apart from that play a moneyish deck hoping to buy enough vp/end before you would be able to do anything big with your deck, though I didnt see that strong of a turn coming and I also hadnt seen that combo you were going for. I didnt save the log either but i think it should be available tomorrow on gokosalvager

Its friday, so i guess adventures wont be released this week anymore. Next week will be the last chance for a release in april. Maybe i should find a betting office offering bets on the release date, i think odds would be pretty nice for an april release $$$$$$$$$

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's discuss Alchemy cards: Apothecary
« on: April 22, 2016, 03:05:13 am »
It can even be worth it to just get 1 or 2 in the early game to speed up cycling while transitioning into another strategy when theres nothing good to do with your opening $4

I am not convinced that this is really a thing.  Yes, cycling is one of Apothecary's main benefits.  But I don't think I've ever gone for Potion / Apothecary specifically for its early-game benefits.  Getting an Apothecary specifically for that would feel like getting a Feast, except even slower.  If I ever want to invest in Apothecaries, I will want them to help me out the entire game.  Yes, their early tricks are awesome, but they better also give me some use for the entire game.

EDIT: I guess I can maybe see doing this with Forge --- Getting a Potion and some Apothecaries, spiking $7 for a Forge, then Forging away everything (potentially including the Potion).  But I've never done that.

Nah, you definitely want to get Apothecary specifically for its early game benefits. That's like the whole point of Apothecary! Buy expensive things early. King's Court, Forge, Hunting Grounds, Pilgrimage, Lost Arts, Training, Tournament, these are all great reasons to go Apothecary. Even if you end up trashing some or all of the Coppers, a cantrip that rearranges your draw order is honestly fine. There's no cost to Apothecary once you've already bought and gotten use out of it.

Yeah i think it was stuff like that i had in mind when i wrote that Passage, granted those Situations are rare. I can also see apothecarys cycling being very beneficial to travellers

Apothecary is a really hard to master card i think. I used to not even consider it most of the time but then got crushed in a lot of games where my opponent went for it and I didnt.

I think its main strenghts are it's versatility and the speed it adds to a deck when theres only really weak or no trashing. It can even be worth it to just get 1 or 2 in the early game to speed up cycling while transitioning into another strategy when theres nothing good to do with your opening $4, and the reordering ability is also really useful.

It also works really well with the other potion cost cards that you want to spam, ie familiar, Alchemist and scrying Pool if theres +buy. You just get a second potion, 1-3 apothecaries first and then suddenly find yourself buying and drawing 2 Alchemists/scrying pools every turn.

Regarding apothecary + familiar i remember a game i played last season in the league, I think it was against scotty2hotty. We both opened potion/something and he got really unlucky on his First shuffle and drew C/P/E/E/E so he had to use his Baker token to buy at least an apothecary. I on the other Hand conveniently got my familiar and thougt i was gonna win the curse split easily, but he managed to keep up and his apothecaries were a lot more useful once the curses had run out than my additional familiars. I was really surprised that his shuffle 1 "dud" apothecary buy turned out so nicely for him in the end.

Let's Dicuss has turned into spam honestly.

There's no more discussion to be found here! Go die with the brackets!

We really need a subforum for these Let's Discuss topics.

Subforum isn't a bad idea, but I think the Base Set is just going to produce bad discussion. Look at this thread! Tons of great discussion here. Lots of long posts and anecdotes and stuff. This is what I want to see on F.ds, even if some people aren't learning much from them others are learning a lot.

Yeah i agree with that i think Base just doesnt have enough interesting cards. Thats why its called Base :D i like this thread about Alchemist a lot as i feel there are a lot of nuances as to how to play the card well

Nah, think of it like functions. TimeToDevelop(Goko) = 2*TimeToDevelop(Any other software company). Though, Goko had their releases out far more promptly than MF has gotten out Adventures.

...I'm mostly posting in this thread to express my continued disappointment about Adventures not yet being released. I'm busy almost all of next week, so I'm REALLY hoping it comes out before this weekend. :(

I probably wrote it wrong (though I don't see how I did), but this was what I intended. Basically, it's a mathematical statement proving it takes Goko twice as long to develop something as any other developer.

That mathematical statement doesnt make a lot of sense if you say X is a company and T is time, since youre multiplying a company unit with a time unit then. Since adventures is still not out im gonna post your intended statement in a more mathematically correct way ;)

Definition (Software development process)
Let X be a software development company and p a project worked on by that company. We then write (X_{p,t}) for the Stochastic process describing the percentual completion of project p at time t, where t is on the nonnegative real number axis. The process (X_{p,t}) fulfills the following properties:

0 <= X_{p,t} <= 1 P-almost sure
X_{p,0} = 0 P-almost sure
X_{p,T} = 1 P-almost sure

For the completion time T which is a random variable.

You can then write

Theorem (MF software project completion Theorem)
Let X be MF and p the dominion online Implementation with the associated completion time T_{X,P}. Let Y be any other software development company and T_{Y,p} the associated completion time. It then holds that T_{X,p} = 2*T_{Y,p} P-almost sure.

Proof
The proof is left as an exercise to the reader.
