Dominion Articles / Re: Deck Control
« on: June 14, 2011, 11:11:49 pm »
One trick I use to assist with treasure tracking is to think back on what I've bought since the shuffle. It's pretty easy to remember how many estates and coppers I have left if I bought a province (gold, gold copper, copper, estate), and a Lab (silver, copper, copper, copper, estate) since the last shuffle.

It sounds complicated when I write it out, but it works for me.

I can honestly say I hadn't thought about the importance of potentially delaying shuffles with Vaults in particular. It's worth noting that with a single Vault the draw will trigger the reshuffle before you discard, which can actually help by keeping those estates and coppers out.

You should have had a really hard time against opponent's 5-2 opening with tactician secret chamber. Double tactician/secret chamber seems as obvious as Double tactician/Conspirator - and both can be combined.

Even more so with Young Witch out, and Secret Chamber being the bane. I think it was a missed opportunity for him not picking up a YW.

If I ever make it up to Conspirator or Torturer, I'll never want to post again.   :P

Yeah, I agree 100% with TINAS.

I don't like it, and I choose not to use it. However, I appreciate the fact that Isotropic has integrated it, and given me the option to play without it. I never had any problem with people who want to use it using it, but I was miffed the first time I entered a game where the 3rd party point counter did not have a !disable option.

That's actually one of my big weaknesses: I tend to write off University, Workshop, and Ironworks, but sometimes they prove critical (like here).  I should focus more often on when such cards are essential to maintaining an engine: kudos!

University/Wharf is one of my all-time favorite catalysts.

Transmute is a horrible card.

I agree with everything you said, up to this point. Transmute has some easy pitfalls, but it can certainly be useful for some quick golds and a duchy or two in the end game.

One thing that was a huge eye opener for me was understanding "Big Money"/"Big Money Ultimate."

This strategy is very simple and breaks down into a few rules:
$8 or more, buy province
$5 or more and 5 or less provinces remaining, buy Duchy
$2 or more and 2 or less provinces remaining, buy Estate
$6 or more, buy gold
$3 or more, buy silver

(the Province cutoff for player 2 buying Duchies changes to 4 or less)
The 'Ultimate' variety adds in 1 Smithy, but never more than 1.

Here's the game changer for me. Big Money Ultimate gets 4 provinces in 16-17 turns on avg. That's fast! And that's buying almost nothing but money. At the start of the game, when you're considering what cards you'd like to buy, will they be able to beat someone going for BMu (either because they're faster in their own right, or they can slow BMu down with attacks)?

As far as general flow of the game, the best advice I can give you is to head over to dominion.isotropic.org and log 15-20 games to get a feel for how different boards will play out. You can use the options at the bottom of the page to limit the cards to just basic dominion at first. However, I really enjoy the expansions, so don't wait too long to try them out.

Game Reports / Re: Bishop's tiebreaker points

im not that crazy about tactician, seems like most of the time you waste 2 turns to get 1 prov and duchy or 1 prov and a gold
I love Tactician (possibly too much). Besides being a great way to draw your 'game breaker' combos, it just feels like it accelerates almost any deck.

Here's a game I played over the weekend where Tactician + Bank gets 4 Provinces by the 10th turn.

I've always preferred Ambassador / Silver, and with some of the other top players here posting the same thing I'm a surprised how big the gap is. Top 10 vs. 61st is a big gap.

I'm trying to think of a $5 card that would necessitate going Ambassador / Silver, though, and I can't come up with one.

This choice is also very dependent on how helpful the out-of-band cards will or won't be for your deck. An early gold in a Fishing Village / Torturer deck will ultimately see some use and give you more buying power once you're drawing your deck. However, taking a Gold in a Minion deck will often hurt more than it helps in the long run.

I will say that I've had pretty bad luck abandoning/changing my strategy after a string of bad draws, but I ultimately feel like I would've lost even sticking to my guns (that's pretty much the nature of bad draws).

That is a pretty impressive game. Kudos!
