I will admit that I'm curious if Donald saw the scavenger/stash combo in playtesting.

He's probably not too worried because it won't come up too often and also Stash is a promo. Weird shit is allowed to happen with promos.

@eHalcyon:
As I said I agree that this is no power combo at all. But at least something to keep in mind to slightly improve your play (which I hadn't so far). If you happen to have a Stash because there is no good $5 or $4 alternative around and you also have one or more Wishing Wells, then it seems to be a good idea to put your Stash on 7th position after reshuffle. (I don't see why the fact that Wishing Well draws first would make it more difficult, just put Stash one position later.)
True, it gets more difficult to execute with more than one Stash (regardless if with Mystic or Wishing Well). But even with more than one Stash, there is an above average chance to connect it when putting it on, say, 12th position - just because you know the position of one of your cards for sure.

You are probably right that because Stash is so weak overall, you usually (if there is no Scavenger or Chancellor) don't want Stashes when Mystic is around as a $5 alternative. But at least one Stash might be good if you already have a few Mystics and there is no better $5 around.

The issue isn't counting down the right number of spots.  It's getting WW in the right hand, just above your Stash.  And yeah, I think it would be more difficult to coordinate multiples using WW as opposed to Mystic.

I'm not sure that mystic/stash will be better than ww/stash. I spent an a afternoon on isotropic trying to get ww/stash to work and it does, but slowly. It is much easier to get heaps of wws. If you open ww/ww and only buy ww and stash you can go alright. when you reshuffle you leave 6/stash/1/stash. It is much easier to get get multiple copies of stash this way.

In the end this is a really complex way to make a lab that always draws silver. much easier to buy lab and silver

I'm looking forward to Scavenger/Stash because I almost never ever buy Stash. The only time I do is on money boards, and I hit $5 instead of $6 and Royal Seal nor Venture are present. So, in other words, I almost never buy Stash.

Oh yeah Stash! I want to use Stash/Mystic. Every reshuffle put 5 cards/Stash/5 cards/Stash. If you have no other drawing you can use your Mystic to pick up a Stash guaranteed. Slow, cumbersome, and probably ineffective, just my kind of combo :D

We've all talked about cards that recieve a power boost from DA, but I'm always more interested in fun than just winning. So what old cards are you excited about trying with DA just for the fun of it?

I always feel kind of a dick building a Saboteur deck if the only purpose is to hurt my opponents, but with Rogue/Grave Robber interactions it is also constructive. Similarly my housemates might grumble less about Swindler openings when they see the interesting Forager interactions. I love double type cards so its good to see something care about types again, Ironmonger will mean i'll be happy to see Great Hall, Nobles and Harem again.

Wait a minute I can Rebuild Feodums into Harems and get 3 silvers for my trouble?!? Hot damn!

A bold prediction, Knights will SUCK if there is a card that has a beneficial when trashed effect (ie fortress) or Tunnel is on board.

Tunnel may not be the best defence to Knights. Tunnel/Copper means Tunnel is trashed and gains you no Gold.

I think Insomniac has the right of it here: Knights discard and then trash. So Knight hitting Tunnel/Copper trashes the Tunnel, but you do get the Gold.

Hmmm, there you go. I assumed that it was reveal, trash, discard. This makes Tunnel a very good Knight defence indeed.

I think the best part about Rats will be in assisting target limited trashers. By that I mean trashers that are limited to trashing only actions or trashing non-treasures. These cards can only clear your deck so far. Using Rats to convert your useless cards into cantrips means that Jack/Hermit will always have a useful target to trash and Death Cart just keeps on giving.

It obviously conflicts with Spice Merchant, though.

Yeah I only mean trashers limited to non-treasures

Here's another one: TR/GR with border village.  Gain a card up to $9 and a card less than $5 by trash bouncing the BV.

I don't think you get the on-gain bonus when you gain BV from the trash.  I believe we had a long, long discussion in this forum about how Gaining (with a capital G) means from the Supply.

????!???!?!?!

I think maybe you're confused. I remember there was a long, long discussion that one could only Gain from the supply unless specifically told to do otherwise. So you can't Mine a copper into a spoils, or even Mint a spoils, or workshop a Madman, or normally gain anything from the trash in any way. But with Grave Robber you can gain from the Trash and Border Village has an on-gain effect that will trigger. But you won't be able to gain the free BV card from the Trash only from the supply.

Village + Pillage + Graverobber/Rogue.

Works with Feast too of course. But a 3-card combo just to make a 5 gainer is probably too much effort.

Pillage is really, really good though - and you can use any village so there's a lot of different options.  It feels like a pin, that's how strong it is (if you can play Pillage every turn).

A pillage every turn is a pretty strong move, maybe not strong enough to be called a pin though. Definitely will dismantle most engines and will rip apart big money's hopes at provinces.

You'll need pretty good drawing and/or deck control to manage to play it every turn. Do you think you can set it up quickly enough and keep it in place while greening? If your opponent builds a more conventional deck and starts going for duchy while the pin is in place they might be able to still do competitively.

Hmmm....but now I remember that Pillage gives you 2 Spoils. That means you don't need to worry about building your economy, because when you activate the pin you've basically added +$6. This makes it a lot more viable than I was thinking.

Can't wait to try this idea out!

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: Count v. Mandarin?
« on: August 19, 2012, 11:11:12 pm »
If it's going to be strong, it's going to be because of the trashing (or because you're playing alt VP). Terminal gold or gain a duchy, WITH a penalty, just isn't a very strong card, early, endgame, whenever. I mean, harvest is not so great, mandarin not that good, just, yeah, it's not so good. Gaining duchies is hardly ever something that will win you the game, except in alt VP. I'm sure chwhite will agree with me here.
So how good is the trashing? Well, the issue is, how soon can you get it. If you can spike one on a 5/2, that trashing ought to be real good. Otherwise, trashing your whole hand becomes weaker and weaker and weaker. To the point where you get to use it once, maaaaybe twice. And for a $5, it just doesn't seem that great. I mean, nice card to have sure, but I am comparing it to other 5s here. And so, the ancillary benefits make it a bit better of a card than Mandarin overall (even though mandarin is more often good, if that makes any sense), but I don't think it will be an above-average 5. Maybe I'm crazy. Maybe I'm right. Time will tell.

While I'm more optimistic than you about Count's other benefits, I agree that is potentially a very powerful alt-vp enabler. Do you think Count is going to be a better Duke enabler than Horse Traders?

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: Urchin spamming
« on: August 19, 2012, 10:35:40 pm »
While considering this I've realised that using Mercenaries to trash will be slower than you may think. If you're under fire from your opponents Urchin/Mercenaries your trashing will be made more difficult. A discard down to 4 is a very weak attack, but if you've got your mercenary in hand when it's played - what do you do? If you discard your worst card you'll have to trash something better with the merc, so you have to discard something you want to keep in the long run thus tanking your next hand.

That said; +$2 & +2 cards is quite strong so it's probably worth it still.

We should call it "garbage in, garbage out."

Is that like "tides go in, tides go out"?

It's a saying, in many fields, in reference to data manipulation/statistics etc. No matter how you manipulate garbage data you'll get garbage results.

I want to coin a new term: the "trash bounce."

Can anybody come up with other strategies that use a trash bounce?

I like it. Any TfB + Fortess is a trash bounce.

I think you guys are overestimating Sir Michael.  Remember how everybody hates Saboteur?  That's because Saboteur doesn't do anything for you -- it's just an attack, and a terminal at that.

Yeah that is true. And I did consider that before voting for old Michael. But, while Michael doesn't do anything for your current turn it screws with your opponent on their next turn, and on their overall deck quality. Hurting your opponent in the short and long term is quite powerful.

Hmmm, if Chancellor, Scavenger and Stash are all on the board... Is the best opening Chancellor/Scavenger? Or does that limit your chances at $5 too much.

I'd definitely prefer opening Scavenger / Silver over Scavenger / Chancellor. The Chancellor doesn't do you much good to set up your 3 Stashes plus 2 Scavengers and the risk to have colliding terminals is much too high given the low expected benefit.

But there is a chance of getting Chancellor or Scavenger + 3 coppers on turn 3. If not buy a silver and reshuffle anyway and you're in a similar position.

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: forager vs. mystic
« on: August 17, 2012, 08:30:49 pm »
Eh, I'm not sure about this.  If you guess right, the mystic only becomes a cantrip, not a lab.  I mean, I see what you're saying about slimming a deck down to pure mystics, but I think it will be hard to get there, because until you do, the mystics you already have will basically just be silvers.  Granted, they aren't terminal silvers, so that is a plus.

I can see how the mystic will be better than I thought, but we'll have to wait and see if it really is a card you can build a deck around.

It becomes a cantrip yes, but it gives +$2. That's like a lab that only draws silver.

I'm almost hesitant to say this, but this combos with Scout. Like for real. You guys seems to have forgotten about all of the deck inspection cards that can help to make this work. Rather than building a deck that is 50% Mystics you can throw in a few Spys to help out. Spy/Mystic should actually work in the way that you wished Spy/Wishing Well did.

Chancellor is the Chancellor I've always wanted.

Well said :D

I'm not hating on my old friend Chancellor, I'm just excited to try Scavenger.

Hmmm, if Chancellor, Scavenger and Stash are all on the board... Is the best opening Chancellor/Scavenger? Or does that limit your chances at $5 too much.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: What expansion to get next?

Intrigue is such a natural compliment to the base set that I can't recommend anything else. Prosperity is awesome and Seaside has my favorite mechanic, the duration card, but the synergy between Base and Intrigue is so strong that I just feel like the two really belong together as the true core of the game.

This.

But if you've played a lot of Dominion on Iso then you should buy your favourite one obviously! None of the expansions are that complicated, and when you're teaching new people you just bring out the simpler cards.

Hermits go mad in the woods. Rats eat everything and breed unstoppably. Urchins live the hard life and grow up to be toughened mercenaries. Knights duel to the death. Mauraders ruin your opposing kingdoms and bring back spoils.

It's all a lot more thematically vivid that usual :D
