Way of the Mouse with Vassal set aside can indeed cause many new things.  Note that Crown doesn't work in that deck you created, it doesn't do anything when you play it and it's not your turn.

Ha, playing Crown on an opponent’s turn would be hilarious. You could also now play Crown during your Cleanup or Night phase. Or in between turns; during Donate resolving.

I just realized Werewolf allows you do do any of the ways during Night.

I go for the obvious one:

5 Pearl Divers on top, 5 Pearls below. Or print 6 Pearls such that you can use 4/4 in 2P and 6/6 in 3P.

First I bottom-decked this on discard such that Pearl Diver could dig for it several times per shuffle, but that felt too good.

Also, I first had this without the extra Buy. But I think it needs it to become more interesting and without it, it might just be a weaker Gold for $5 which is unattractive if there are other Coin sources.

Not sure whether it needs the discard nerf, the fact that this appears late and misses shuffles without Pearl Diver support might be enough.

Minor quibble: Pearl should have in the corners, rather than the ? symbol, as it produces every time you play it, whether or not it's trashed. See Contraband.

February
Event
Look through your hand. You may play an Action card from it.

April
Event
Look through your deck. You may play an Action card from it.
February would actually be a pretty decent event, depending on which Actions you had in your hand, especially with extra buys

Return to Action phase would be nice too.  Not being able to play any more treasures would otherwise limit the use case.

There's a reason it's called really bad card ideas

Is Toil really that bad?

Toil gives +1 buy. Anyway, I don't get it. What's the joke with the month names?

Menagerie has an event called "March" as the verb, but Awaclus chose to interpret it as the month

Way of the Camel opens the possibility for an even more stupid version of the Donate pin: Donate everything except a single action that doesn't generate spending money. Now you have inescapable debt, despite a growing pile of exiled Gold you can never reach. (-8
This feels like it should be a metaphor but I can't for the life figure out what it is.

American higher education?

With the new global rule that Costs don't go below $0, will future cost reducers (and revisions of current cost reducers) drop the "but not less than $0" clause from their text?

I believe that was the point of making it a global rule

Trash Collector
Action - $4
+$4
Each other player may trash a card from their hand
My hunch is that this is better than Bishop without being crazy: in non-mirrors you need another trasher.
This isn't really like Bishop, the point of Bishop is to get vp, not to get money. Bishop doesn't help you hit 5, this very much does.

I think they were comparing the cards due to the "each other player may trash" clause.

Bonfire is one of the only (maybe the only) ways to remove actions from play, and you almost never would want to actually do that anyways. For treasures, you might want to play Crypt, buy Mandarin, play Herbalist, etc...and some of those are things that you might actually want to do.
Don't forget mint! And procession also trashes actions from play, it just doesn't work on durations post-errata

While I like coal in concept, I think that in practice, it's going to cause time issues. Just smithy now suddenly has 3 decision points, and if you're playing an engine, where turns already tend to take a while and have lots of draw capability, that's a lot of extra time. Not to mention interacting with sculptor and other hand gainers, and adding so much extra time to scrying pool, which already takes forever.

I've posted this one before at some point, but not for a contest:

House Brew
Treasure - Reserve
+
+2 Buys.
When you play this, put it on your tavern mat.
-
When you buy a Ruins, +. When you buy any zero-cost card, discard this from your tavern mat.

EDIT: I don't know why the image looks like it says -. That is, of course, supposed to be a + sign. ...And the image doesn't say reserve. Seems like I always make mistakes when making images. That's probably why I often don't bother with images.
Should also have the looter type, since you mention ruins

Do you think there's enough design space left in overpay to bring it back in another hypothetical future expansion? Especially if you can put it on an event (I suppose you could put it on a project, but I personally see no clean way to do so and don't find it compelling enough to force it)

Way of the Chimera

Do the effects of the set aside Ways in any order.
-
Setup: Set aside two other Ways next to this.

Should probably say "either order" instead of any.

89
Looking at the list of Way names*, I'm wondering whether it's the Goat or the Rat that trashes.

I’m guessing goat. I think rat would be something like «Gain a copy of this».

Also, my guess is that the goat has the «an unused action» text. Maybe something like «-1 action. If you still have an unused action, trash a card». I’m guessing that a straight up «Trash a card» would be too game-changing.

"Gain a copy of this" would be way too powerful though, unless it had something like "If this card costs $4 or less, gain a copy of it".  Otherwise, you could buy one copy of an expensive action, and then make multiple copies of it

I mean, the ones we've seen so far have all been game-warping in their own Way, so why would that be so bad?

Sorry for the successive posts. Here's my solution:...

But that doesn't use populate, which is the point of the thread

I'm back again! Here's something probably not balanced that I slapped together at almost 2 am

Market Square's top with a minor trasher/spy thing below the line triggered by purchasing cards. Could probably use a cost adjustment. Original idea had just the spy bit and costed less, I decided it was lackluster and added the trashing option. Might go back to the original still, not sure yet, but it's 2 am where I live and I'm going to bed.

You've probably answered this before, but do you ever look through fan cards for inspiration?

Donald has said in the past that he actively avoids fan cards because he wants to avoid the possibility of someone attacking him for "stealing" their idea

36 days until projected release date!

(I always like using square numbers as my markings for time -- as we get closer to the date, they come more frequently)
As is tradition, 36 days for me to figure out storage for this next set.

You figure it out in advance? That's probably smart. I just keep it in the original box until I can figure something out, which I inevitably don't get around to until months later. At least this time I managed to get around to Rennaissance storage a decent amount of time before the new one came out -- I think I didn't get around to Nocturne storage until about a week before Rennaissance.

Alas, I still have Renaissance in the original box.  :(

You mean you guys don't just keep them all in the original box and pray that you have enough space on the dominion shelf for the next one?

Rules Questions / Re: Multiple things happening at the same time
« on: October 09, 2019, 11:22:06 am »
What I think Donald is trying to say is this:

There are two rules in play here. The first is that reactions go in turn order. The second is the "keep reacting if time hasn't passed" rule.

His ruling appears to be that, after going through turn order, and the trigger for the reaction hasn't passed (in this urchin/diplomat case, playing an attack), a person who chose not to react the first time, or who still has the reaction, can change their mind and choose to react due to the latter of the two rules, starting a new turn order of decisions regarding reactions to the trigger.

Ok, here's my submission. It's a cross between smugglers and duplicate.

1) This orginally did not have +1 action. The problem was how to price it. It seemed worse than duplicate, since you had less control and it was more likely to miss reshuffle (since it must stay on your tavern mat for at least 1 turn). It also seemed better than smugglers since it was more versatile since you could hold onto it (ever get smugglers on a turn your opponent didn't buy anything good?) and it could work on any opponent (not strictly better since you get the card later and eavesdropper is more likely to miss the reshuffle). If figured a good solution was to give +1 action and make it $4.

2) I added the "on their turn" clause so it you wouldn't have players using their eavesdroppers on other players eavesdroppers (you'd start having reactions on reactions and it would get confusing who gets to react first). Also, at that point it would start to feel more like a duplicate. This usually won't make too much of a difference since cards gained on other players turns are usually cards you don't like (ruins, curses, etc.)

really like this. Probably more of an FAQ/errata question but: what happens when... say.. three player game, Players B + C have Eavesdropper on their mat, player A plays two Highways and buys the penultimate Province - whose Eavesdropper happens first? whoever's next in turn order?

Next in turn order makes the most sense to me. The only card I can think of that might have a good precedent ruling would be Fool's Gold, but I don't know if that ruling exists or not just because I doubt anyone's ever really considered a nearly empty gold pile with that card in the kingdom.

Bonfire of Vanities, Action - Reaction - Attack, Costs $3
+2 Cards. Trash a card from your hand.
-
When another player gains a Kingdom card, you may reveal this from your hand to trash one card from that Kingdom card pile in the Supply.

Fixed the prior submission. hhelibebcnofnena said I can only submit one. So, for the purposes of the contest, I'll submit Bonfire of Vanities.

There's no rule saying that you can only reveal a given Reaction card once per triggering event, so when somebody gains a Kingdom card, you could just reveal the same Bonfire of Vanities numerous times to empty that pile.
what's the Attack part of this? Could one player stop the supply-trashing by having a moat?

Good point. Since it did damage to the supply, I thought Attack should be in the heading. I can take it out though so that it does not react with other Reactions. Will update.

As a general rule, attacks affect all other players. Possession, for example, really feels like it should be an attack, but since it only affects the player to your left, it isn't one.

Dueling Witch
Action-Reaction

Each other player gains a Curse.
----------------------------------------------------
When any player gains a card (including you), you may reveal this to return a copy of that card to the supply from your hand or the top of your discard pile, then discard this.

The reaction by itself isn't great, but the presence of this card gives you a reason to pick it up for the reaction, because this is its own defense.

Previous version had you discard this first, which was an oversight.

First off, this wants the Attack type. Secondly, DXV has said that players don't like attacks that don't give you something else, and I personally don't think that the reaction is enough of a something else. Just a thought.
